ORIGINAL: kisstheson The photos are beautiful. I'm having a difficult time locating your drawings through. I'm s little slow. and how do you respond to them? what do they make you think of? what do the images elicit? how do you resond to the text? what do you think of the connection between the images and text? here is the statement i submitted: Statement for whisper My work explores the interaction between images and text, and the [changing] interpretations that occur as one discovers and explores those connections. The connections between the images and texts soon become about the connections between the viewer and object, and ultimately between the viewer and everything they bring to that conversation. As such, the work insists that the viewer or reader does some of the heavy lifting of interpretation. The work evokes questions. What do these images signify? What do these texts mean? How are they connected, if at all? This questioning is a way to open up ideas for the viewer to explore and to find their own place in the work. This process requires a contemplative space where one can take time to wait and consider. Projects begin with an idea, a phrase or an object, which helps generate images and texts. Since the work tends to have multiple elements, the process takes time. These pieces were inspired by the theme – whisper - and the purpose for the display and auction, namely supporting the work of the mustard seed. Whisper suggested to me the idea of communication. We use both words and images to communicate, and I wanted to employ phrases that cajoled, challenged and entreated the viewer/ reader. The images speak of the universe, and imply something about our place in it. The texts on the other hand, speak more directly, personally, and perhaps even intimately, to the viewer’s own position and attitude. This directness is contextualized by the impetus behind the exhibition, which is the mustard seed’s work with the homeless. In light of the increasing emphasis on missional thinking, both within and outside the church, the texts can take on a more pointed tone and interpretation. fyi. these pieces are in the context of an exhibition to raise funds for the mustard seed, so the ideas of social justice, responsibility, and serving the poor are an essential part of that interpretive context. of course, there can be resonances outside of that, but that is the framework for the pieces...
