I have a 2003 hp windows xp (pretty sure a 1G) computer. I dont have alot of stuff downloaded onto it, recently I deleted quite a few unused programs. I scan it for adware, viruses, do the disk cleanups, and have high speed internet, tho a cheaper one. Right now I am paying 19.99 for high speed. What else can I do to make my computer run more efficiently? Or has the usage of it over time caused 'breaks' and deletions which wont be recovered.

If you don't find any obvious malware on your computer, figuring out why it's running slower than you'd like can be a big pain. You might try opening up the task manager (hit Ctrl+Shft+Esc) and then going to the Processes tab. Make sure that it's showing processes from all users, and then sort by CPU usage and then by Memory usage. If any programs are seem to be up higher than they should be, you can ask here to see if the should be taking up as much resources as they are. This can happen for a variety of reasons (for instance, I never did find out why Flash in Firefox always seemed to cause near 100% CPU usage on my old computer).
I'll try and think of some more suggestions later.

Ugh, Flash and Firefox... Before FF3 came out, there was a stretch of about 6 months where I COULD NOT get flash to work. If I restarted the computer, it would work for a few hours, then would only play video for 2 seconds and then stop. Restarting FF rarely fixed it. It's a lot better now; if I leave FF open for a few days, the problem may come back, but restarting FF solves it.

Couple more things you can do.
1. Get rid of all your restore points except the last one. Then reduce the amount of disk space reserved for restore points. Accessories/System_Tools/System_Restore.
2. Get CCleaner from download.com, then run it -- both the cleaner and registry sections.
3. Now run defrag again.
Side note: it is not at all uncommon for me to do a restore from factory CD if a slowdown can't be fixed in 2-3 hours. There's just no net benefit in going any further. Know when to cut your losses, and then cut them. All your user files and your software kits are already on a separate disk or CD/DVD for instant retrieval (right?).

I second the motion. I usually reinstall Windows every 18 months or so.

there is a great program you can download that will cleanup your computer,and all your junk that slows your computer
It is called Advanced Windows Care
The personal version is free and it works great,
