My husband changed his life insurance recently. So the insurance company sent out a nurse to draw blood. The nurse had 4 inch fingernails! My husband said she had a hard time using the syringe, and we both wondered if this was very sanitary for an R.N. Is everybody else as grossed out as we were? Do you think this is safe for the patient?

If you think this nurse poses a danger to your health, by all means, ask for a different nurse.

Are you sure she was a nurse?...perhaps she was just a lab tech.

Either way, generally the nurses/medical staff employed by insurance companies are no where near the quality employed by a hospital and that could explain the lack of professionalism that 4-inch nails imply.

If she could not poke patients and keep underneath her nails sanitary, I can see it. I don't have four-in nails, but I have some free edge. I get concerned that I'll be working with something infectious, not clean under there well and end up getting something myself.

The Hospital I work at bans them for any patient care employees for sanitary reasons.

As a matter fo fact-there is a P&P which limits the length of nails for these same employees. (Can't remember the exact limit as I am not a patient care worker.)

Sanitary issues aside, Personally-I think they are grotesque looking on anyone.

While in school to become a Veterinary Technician I did an internship at Ohio State. Especially in the Surgery rotation there was a limit on nail length. There probably was one for equine and food animal as well, but that was more because of the physical-ness of the work. Plus, you really don't wanna deal with manure under long nails...

Working as a vet tech in a small animal practice no way could I let my nails get long. You get stuff under them that can't easily be cleaned. And this is working with animals. I'm certain working with humans would have strict requirements!
