growing up roman catholic in a real old fashioned church i grew up learning about how we should fear god and how the slightest wrong could send us to hell. (not to talk down on the catholic church). when i was 14 i started to refuse to go to church, not because of lack of faith, it was because of a conflict of ideas. i knew god is not the wrathful god of the old testament but the loving god of the new testament. two years later around my sixteenth birthday a friend invited me to his church, a small church of about 100-200 people. i felt at home. i was no longer fearing the wrath of god but embracing the love of our savior. Jesus was more than a king he was my brother the god man, the humble king.

2 Timothy 2:24-25 (New International Version)
New International Version (NIV)

24.And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.
25.Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth,

I also left the Catholic church and found myself in a small church. My parents divorced and I was afraid we kids would be "kicked out" because of that too! (I realize this is not true; however, as a 12 yr old, that's how I thought.) I tried to "find" God in the service but just couldn't connect. I really wanted a relationship with God and not just a religion.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom.

If you break one commandment, you are guilty of them all.

Without Christ, the slightest wrong does send you to hell.

I say that with L-O-V-E love!

Since you are talking about new discoveries, I will share with you... a psalm. (#123)

Unto thee I lift up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.
Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God...

But in a legalistic church it is done w/o love. One needs to try harder. One slip-up and it is: Go directly to Hell. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

Actually, it is the fact of not being in a covenant relationship with God that ends us up in hell. The sin nature we possess and the sins we commit are just an outgrowth of the lack of covenant.

Read Romans 11 again about being grafted into the cultivated olive tree. (salvation)

I would submit to you that this statement is a very dangerous heresy called Marcionism.

The God of the Bible is the same for all eternity. Several places in both testaments say that HE does not change.

Exo 34:6 The LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, “The LORD! the LORD, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness and truth,
Exo 34:7 keeping loving kindness for thousands, forgiving iniquity and disobedience and sin; and that will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the children’s children, on the third and on the fourth generation.”

Deu 5:9 you shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them; for I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me;
Deu 5:10 and showing loving kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Mal 3:6 “For I, the LORD, don’t change; therefore you, sons of Jacob, are not consumed.

Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Do the OT passages make God sound like a wrathful despot? He is not. Never has been.

I grew up SB and they preached the same thing.

That's surprising because all the SBC churches I'm familiar with teach Perseverance of the Saints - or Once Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, regenerated, and indwelt by the Holy Spirt, then eternally a joint-heir with Christ.

This is the teachings (doctrines) of all "religions."

But a relationship with the One who died for us is a different matter.
And I enjoy that so much more than I did the religion. Doesn't matter
what the label was.
