The cheapest I've ever seen turkeys around here (Thanksgiving or Christmas) is 99 cents a pound. And that's not Butterball or anything - it's the cheapie ones.

I haven't really checked yet. They don't usually start putting them on a good sale until the week before Thanksgiving, which will be soon. I don't remember what I paid per pound last year.

Turkeys are often loss leaders in stores and you could pick a smallish one up for $6-10 last year (L 3.5-6). And yeah, there's lots of chemicals and water in there.
Free-ranged birds (and I don't mean the ones crammed in broiler houses with a door in case they want to go outside, or crammed in pens outside) are more expensive, but if you have any open area, next year you can raise your own cheaper.
Really, 2-4 little poults in a cardboard box with a heat light in June, moving into a pen at six weeks and moving outside a week later, they can sleep in a dog crate at night. As long as the dog or neighbors' dogs don't kill them, you can raise your own. They are surprisingly affectionate birds and will come when you call them. They'll stick around home and not fly off, but they'll probably want to roost on the roof at night. You can hire someone to butcher them or take them to a butchering place, but it only takes 10 minutes to do the job yourself, except the plucking, which takes slightly less than forever. Invite a friend to help and you can talk.
You can buy gamebird food in 50# sacks at a feed store and provide water; they'll find their own grit in the ground. Sell the extra birds to your neighbors while the birds are alive and recoup a lot of your cost.
Yeah, seriously.  But if you're in the city on small lots, they'll visit your neighbors...

Pastured/free-range around here go for about 4 bucks a pound. That is dressed weight, butchered and frozen from the farm. Heritage birds raised the same way are between 7-8 bucks a pound. I think we are going with a broad breasted white (that's the typical factory farm breed in the US) from a local farm. I am not quite ready to spring for a heritage bird and not at all sure that I can cook it without drying it out. Next year both my SIL and I will both have babies under a year at Thanksgiving time so we are going OUT. Our current plan is to buy a small heritage breed and cook it for ourselves to get a little practice in before we buy one big enough to feed 10 people.

Not sure of the price per pound, but I paid $22 for the largest Smoked Turkey I could find last weekend. I was afraid to wait because the smoked ones go fast around here.

Depending on what brand you buy, you can get one here as cheap as $.37 a lb(for a Jenny-O turkey). Butterball is $.99 a lb.

Publix and Winn Dixie both have some turkeys for $.69/lb this week--I'm hoping for lower, but with the price of groceries being still so inflated, that may be the best we get this year. We're going out of town for the holiday and I won't be cooking the turkey this year, I'll probably buy at least one for the freezer. Even at $.69/lb, that pretty cheap for poultry!

The turkey sales in S. CA started last week. Butterball up to 16 lbs were $8, over 16 lbs were $10.
Safeway turkeys were $5 and $7. This week, it's only the Safeway turkeys on sale at the same price.
I've also heard chatter from across the country that Wal-Mart had them for $.40/lb.
In addition to Safeway, Albertsons has Butterball turkeys on sale Buy One Get One free. These are frozen.

We are technically buying a live turkey - but the farmer is such a nice guy and likes us soooo much he will process it for us just cause. Umm, yeah right. It does come processed, thank goodness but I am sure the labor for that is built into the price per pound (and I am so totally ok with that). It is weird but that is how the state law works.

I am getting my turkey free. If I spend $300 over about a 1 month period I get a free turkey. You can also upgrade to a better brand and pay about $.29/lb.
I saw them at one grocery store for $.49/lb last week. (well the sale week goes from THurs-Wed so it ended yesterday)

I just got our ad today and the Farm Fresh brand is $.34 a lb. I am not too picky about my turkey so that is what I will buy.

Honeysuckle White are running 59 cents a pound. Giant Eagle has their brand for 40 cents a pound. And Butterball? Only place I've seen them on sale is Aldi's, 99 cents a pound.
