Yes, while this is a shock, this has been in the planning stages for several years. Dobson has never wanted Focus to be "James Dobson University" or a monument to his legacy. The ministry is running well without his active hand in it, and will continue to thrive and serve the Lord long after Dobson goes home to Him. Coral Ridge Ministries is a sad recent example of what happens when a ministry is built around one personality without planning for the future. On the other hand, Calvary Chapel, the family of churches founded by Chuck Smith, will most likely grow and thrive after he either steps down or goes home to the Lord (he is now 82) because other pastors have stepped up to the church's leadership as Smith, like Dobson, has wisely pulled back. This is clearly not the end of Dobson. I believe that once he cuts his ties with the ministry he founded--liberals, look out! He may become a full-time one-man gadfly for family and life issues. That has become his own life's passion in the past 15 years or so, and he would now be free to devote all his time to it. But I also believe that the heavy stress and pressure that comes with speaking out on such fiery but important issues was what brought about his various health problems in the past, so the one-man gadfly thing may not be likely.
