DENVER — James Dobson, the voice of conservative Christian group Focus on the Family, will no longer host its flagship radio broadcast and is cutting formal ties with the organization that he founded more than 30 years ago, the evangelical group said Friday.

Dobson, 73, and the board of directors both agreed about the moves, which will go into effect at the end of February, ministry officials said. The decision to part ways was amicable and long anticipated, said Gary Schneeberger, spokesman for the Colorado Springs-based group.

Dobson has distanced himself in recent years from the organization he founded in 1977 and built into an influential force — both as a political powerhouse and provider of conservative family and moral advice. Dobson resigned as Focus on the Family president in 2003 and as chairman of the board in February.

I didn't see this coming, although I admit I don't really follow the organization much.

I could see why he might want to resign from the board or quit the radio show (he is past the age of retirement), but cutting ties with the organization completely seems strange.

It's been a while since I've last listened to Focus On The Family (on the radio), but judging from what I may have been reading, regarding Dr. Dobson's resignation, would it be possible to think it might be budgetary-related, given how the economy is making it a bit harder for longtime FOTF members to continually donate to the organization--especially right around the time Dobson should be seriously thinking about an heir apparent to succeed from his position...

ManimalX -> RE: Dr Dobson Quits Focus on the Family (11/6/2009 8:12:19 AM)

As someone who listens to FotF daily and follows Jim's updates, this is no surprise at all. He is moving on, and feels he has given of his life what the Lord has required for this ministry. It was never his, he just got the opportunity to be a part of it.

God bless Jim Dobson, a humble, gentle, God-fearing man whom I am blessed to have listened to for decades.

Focusing -> RE: Dr Dobson Quits Focus on the Family (11/6/2009 2:43:20 PM)

This has been in the planning for a while. No surprise, he is 73 [;)]

tacitus -> RE: Dr Dobson Quits Focus on the Family (11/6/2009 3:15:47 PM)

He's doing this in the hopes of avoiding the problems other ministries like Coral Ridge Ministries encountered when D James Kennedy died leaving no heir apparent. I'm no fan of Dobson's but I do applaud his decision not to turn the Focus on the Family organization into his own personal or family fiefdom as so many other televangelists and ministry leaders do. Too often these organizations more resemble personality cults than anything else.

It remains to be see if FoF can survive without Dobson at the helm -- some people will no doubt stop listening and contributing once he's left -- that's probably unavoidable.

Amen to that, a very good man. I am very surprised as well to see so many on this forum who look down their noses at that man (from many comments i have seen in the past here). God bless him.

I agree with the above though I used to be a FotF fan. I wish him and his ministry well and I'm glad that he is doing this the right way.

I don't think it strange, the new leadership needs to be the leadership, and not have him second guessing what they do, nor have employess come to him with questions about the present leadership.

When a long time Pastor retires, it is best for him not to attend the Church that he Pastored for the same reasons.

Thanks
RC

I know this is off topic, but I never thought there would be such a decent and logical reason for what you just said RC. Thanks for the bit of wisdom. [;)]

Sounds like to me that the 73 year old man with health issues is retiring...nothing more, nothing less. I think he needs to make a clean break from them so the organization can move forward.

Marcus. -> RE: Dr Dobson Quits Focus on the Family (11/7/2009 12:57:16 PM)

It sounds like Mr Dobson has done that.

completely agree with everything you said[sm=thumbsup.gif]

richartrod -> RE: Dr Dobson Quits Focus on the Family (11/7/2009 2:42:21 PM)

Yes, while this is a shock, this has been in the planning stages for several years. Dobson has never wanted Focus to be "James Dobson University" or a monument to his legacy. The ministry is running well without his active hand in it, and will continue to thrive and serve the Lord long after Dobson goes home to Him.

Coral Ridge Ministries is a sad recent example of what happens when a ministry is built around one personality without planning for the future. On the other hand, Calvary Chapel, the family of churches founded by Chuck Smith, will most likely grow and thrive after he either steps down or goes home to the Lord (he is now 82) because other pastors have stepped up to the church's leadership as Smith, like Dobson, has wisely pulled back.

This is clearly not the end of Dobson. I believe that once he cuts his ties with the ministry he founded--liberals, look out! He may become a full-time one-man gadfly for family and life issues. That has become his own life's passion in the past 15 years or so, and he would now be free to devote all his time to it. But I also believe that the heavy stress and pressure that comes with speaking out on such fiery but important issues was what brought about his various health problems in the past, so the one-man gadfly thing may not be likely.

cberman -> RE: Dr Dobson Quits Focus on the Family (11/7/2009 9:10:55 PM)

I wish him all the best for his future endeavors. As others have said, that he does not aim to make FotF into a monarchy is a good thing.

3cappuccinosmom -> RE: Dr Dobson Quits Focus on the Family (11/7/2009 9:45:35 PM)

I'm not surprised. I hope he's left FotF in good and capable hands. I'm sure he was very thoughtful about arranging his departure and who would take over.

Having seen a church taken over by a "family dynasty", I can't say this is a bad thing, although I can understand why it would be hard for people to emotionally "let go" of Dr. Dobson as the face of FotF.

dctalkgirl -> RE: Dr Dobson Quits Focus on the Family (11/11/2009 11:06:00 PM)

I know he will be missed he has helped our family so much with his encouragement. I got to see his son speak at a ATF convention and they both are Godly men. God Bless them both!

cow451 -> RE: Dr Dobson Quits Focus on the Family (11/12/2009 11:18:33 AM)

FOF became Dobson's Political Action Committee. Now, the organization can continue moving back to it's ministry.

Covaan_Meshuga -> RE: Dr Dobson Quits Focus on the Family (11/12/2009 12:45:55 PM)

Definitely NOT being a Dobson fan, nor (especially) thinking of him as a man of humility, I appreciated reading what others have written here. I did, however, appreciate his very public stance on abortion and the work he did against it.

henny -> RE: Dr Dobson Quits Focus on the Family (1/15/2010 7:46:44 AM)

UPDATE

As I said before, I could see retiring, but Dobson's cutting ties completely with FOTF seemed strange to me. Even if he did want to step aside for new leadership, there would have been no reason to completely remove himself from the organization like he did.

So I wasn't too surprised when I read this:

http://www.gazette.com/articles/dobson-91549-new-plans.html

Apparently he's now starting a rival non-profit organization and radio show which will compete with Focus on the Family (he says it's not meant to compete, but I don't see how it could not).

He's even calling it "James Dobson on the Family" (so similarly named that it seems almost deliberate).

People are speculating that he does in fact want to pass on his ministry to his son, and thus he left because he could not do that at FOTF (which is just sheer speculation, I guess).

At any rate, I don't see how this bodes well for Focus on the Family's future. Sure there may be room for more than one Dobson founded nonprofit, but I don't see how losing their most bankable celebrity personality to a rival organization with a similar name and nearly identical purpose could be good for them.

Wasn't the radio show supported to have his son Ryan as a co-host?

richartrod -> RE: Dr Dobson Quits Focus on the Family (1/17/2010 3:11:30 AM)

It's just like I suspected... Jim Dobson is creating a separate organization where he and his son Ryan can be free to raise hell for the good of the family unit without the restraints and confines of Focus on the Family, that is, political activism competing with practical advice for strengthening Christian families.

In recent years Dr. Dobson has become more like a Christian Glenn Beck or Bill O'Reilly in his tireless advocacy for preserving our Judeo-Christian heritage and values, all of which have taken their toll on his health. It has clearly become his obsession above all other pursuits, almost to a fault. His son Ryan is even more so, willing to stomp and crush your toes to defend our Lord in the public arena. It is far better for Jim Dobson to pursue what he believes God has called him to do apart from Focus, although I am not sure it will go very far.
