Nostradamus's Doomsday Gets Plenty of Airtime
Chuck Colson - BreakPoint

If you are the credulous type, there has never been a better time to treat yourself to some luxuries, at least if the terms of the deal are right. If the merchant or manufacturer says "no payments or interest through 2012," go for it.

At least that what you conclude watching the History Channel.

For many years, the network was nicknamed the "Hitler Channel" because of all the shows it ran on World War II and the Nazis. Today, a better nickname would be the "Nostradamus Channel." Hardly a day goes by without at least one show touting some doomsday scenario and how it was foretold.

At the center of this programming strategy lies Nostradamus, the 16th-century French apothecary whose devotees claim foresaw everything from the rise of Napoleon to 9/11. Everyone who has ever written book on Nostradamus gets extended face time on the History Channel, where their claims are treated with the utmost seriousness.

It isn't only Nostradamus. Name a doomsday prediction made by some long-dead person or group and chances are the Nostradamus Channel has given it a respectful airing, no matter how unhinged the claims might be.

The latest and greatest example is the new series The Nostradamus Effect. That's the name the producers have given to the "convergence" of "doomsday prophecy" and "current events."

It is amazing the hoops we humans will jump through in order to do anything to nullify in our minds the truth of God's Word the Bible.

This quote spoke to me in particular:
"It's not much to go on, but then again, this isn't about facts or reason—it's about fear. It's about understandable anxiety made worse because in rejecting Christianity, the West has rejected the basis of its hope. A world in which God's purposes are being fulfilled for our good has been replaced by one that leaves man in charge, mostly for ill."

What should be the Christian response to the fascination about the year 2012?

Since Christians have various views on eschatology, I think the thing we should not do is advertise our own version of date setting. Pastors can preach that pagan scenarios are not biblical and do not coincide with any known scriptural "time line." People should be warned to ignore disaster/end of the world scenarios, sort of like the Thessalonians were warned to not be disturbed nor "shaken in mind."

2012 is going to be nothing

I guess we have to make a decision...who are we going to believe; God or Nostradamus?

I think I'll go with God.[:)]

In Messiah,

Oh, sure, Bob, Take the easy way out. No taste for Brimstone, huh? w e l l, , , I don't exactly blame you, but am still mad since you claimed my choice before I could lay fingers to the keys. So, watch out there, brudduh, I am about to land on top of you with the same choice as you, and pray you don't mind the weight sitting on your shoulders. Ha [:)]

I am in Giggle mode tonight, as I joyously praise my God, and try to type solid somber words. I just had to delete a bunch, worthy of Comedy Corner. Probably wouldn't be received well, any how, since I didn't include foul language. Ho-Hum.

Gotta go, my fingers are not being polite to hero's of History Channel tonight.

In Messiah, His Blessing, Watchfulness, and Lungs sound enough to blow the Shofar. Arley

No, it'll be worse than nothing. It will be another paint-by-numbers disaster movie.
...Oh, you meant the year. My bad.

If that's your kind of flick, then I hope you enjoy it. : )
But I agree, the end-of-the-world scare surrounding the date is nothing but empty hooplah. It worries me when Christians get so caught up in this kind of thing.

Too late, I know of one Vineyard church that is affiliated it's ministry with the IHOP prayer movement that is very public on its' pronouncement that 2012 is a disaster that will only be averted by its' prayer warriers.

2012 is turning into a hucksters dream there, when nothing happens they get to take credit, if something happens (anything, anywhere) they get to throw the guilt trip on the congregation for not being "spiritually minded" enough to follow the pastor and stop it (a regular theme there, after all, he WAS annointed as a prophet).

It's really disgusting.

Milliecat -> RE: Nostradamus's Doomsday Gets Plenty of Airtime (11/23/2009 10:03:57 PM)

I think it is very sad that people look to a Mayan calendar and various seers in an attempt to know the future. All they have to do is read the Bible in order to know the truth. It would tell them that there is no way 2012 will be the end because no man knows the day and because it is already 2009. The Bible states there will be a 7yr. Tribulation which hasn't begun yet.

I think, as someone else said, that this will end up being another Y2K, a lot of hype over nothing.
