Why would a real American want to chair an organization that
is opposed to the United States?

At the least it is a conflict of interest, and at worst possibly treason.

Only if you don't have the remotest clue of what treason means.

As far as the conflict of interest goes, if you want to protect your interests, better to have a voice there than no voice.

I know what treason is.

Our forefathers were so adamant by the way
England and other countries execute people
in the name of treason, they made it almost
impossible for anyone to be convicted of treason.

In the long run, it's a good thing.
We just have to find other ways to take care of traitors.

And I would agree we need a voice, but a voice for and of
the people.

He got elected. That makes him the voice, or at least one of many thereof. Not everyone's going to like it, but that's the way it is.

Just to directly answer the OP - UN participation at such meetings by the President was expressly authorized in the UN Participation Act of 1945.

SEC. 2.
(a) The President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, shall appoint a representative of the United States at the seat of the United Nations who shall have the rank and status of envoy extraordinary and ambassador plenipotentiary, shall receive annual compensation of $20,000, and shall hold office at the pleasure of the President. Such representative shall represent the United States in the Security Council of the United Nations and shall perform such other functions in connection with the participation of the United States in the United Nations as the President may from time to time direct.

....
(e) Nothing contained in this section shall preclude the President or the Secretary of State, at the direction of the President, from representing the United States at any meeting or session of any organ or agency of the United Nations.

Bottom line - no, it's perfectly legal and frankly, highly advisable. Best to have a seat at the table when things involving security are discussed.

I voted "not sure" because if not really treasonous, it seems like it is a very unwise thing to do because of all the security knowledge to which he is privvy. I just don't trust the guy.

The post was for a month-long summit, not a permanent post.

The Obama administration hopes to use the month-long appointment to emphasise a departure from the Bush administration's strategy of pursuing its own unilateral policies through the council.

Exactly, which is why item e) in the above referenced congressional authorization covers the matter.

The OP didn't make that very clear, nor did the links.
