I have an NIV, NLT, NASB, KJV and NKJV. I like them all pretty well. I think the easiest to read would be the NIV or the NLT.

I have NASB - the International Inductive Study Bible from Kay Arthur. My husband, who went to seminary, has definite opinions about bibles, and NASB is a literal translation, so I like that about it. I also have others - KJV, NIV, etc. When we lived in TN, I did get into a little debate with someone I taught with. She was KJV all the way. In fact, she said, "It was good enough for Jesus, so it's good enough for me." When I told her I was pretty sure Jesus didn't speak English and wasn't on earth in 1611, she didn't appreciate it too much.

I use the NIV for preaching and teaching and NASB for Bible study.

You never want to use just one translation.

The NIV does have errors.

The KJV has many errors as well.

The NASB is the strictest translation to the Greek manuscripts.

I would suggest NOT using the KJV for study because no one speaks in that language anymore and its very hard to understand unless you are Shakespeare! LOL!!!

When I am reading the Bible just to read and hear God's word, I like the KJV. It is beautifully written and gives me a sense that I am reading something very special and sacred. When I am studying the Bible to understand God's word, I use the Illustrated Holman Christian Standard Study Bible. It is written in simple everyday English but not to the point that you feel like a child reading it and is a thought for thought translation/word for word combined. I agree with the other posts that recommend a variety of translations be used to ensure accuracy of thought.

My personal favorite is KJV. I have LOTS of Bibles and probably have at least one in most translations. After KJV, I'd have to say I like ESV next. The translation is in plainer English, but it gives a similar feeling to reading the KJV. I'd probably recommend ESV for someone reading on a Middle School level.

My church primarily uses KJV, but my Assistant Pastor frequently quotes NIV and The Message Bible in his teaching. My least favorite translation is probably the TNIV.

I too use the HCSB (not the Illustrated, though I know it's handy! I just haven't acquired one; have so many Bibles already) and am thrilled to see another HCSB user on the boards!

Your description of it is accurate.

I use two translations, the New Living Translation and New International Version. The NIV is what I grew up with in high school youth group and I study the NLT Life Recovery Bible as part of my Celebrate Recovery group. For me, both translations are easy to understand.

The NIV is a solid translation all around. The NLT is an incredible improvement from The Living Bible, which I have hated since I was a teenager because it plays way too fast and loose on paraphrasing verses into contemporary English. The former interim pastor at my church echoed my sentiments when he declared at our adult Bible study "The Living Bible SUCKS." I'm a Missouri Synod Lutheran, so take that rant with a grain of salt.

I also have a NKJV which I refer to once in a while, primarily for its good updating of KJV language while maintaining its majestic prose.

While the original KJV is hands down the greatest English translation ever made, nobody talks Shakespeare's English anymore and I don't understand big chunks of it (and I have a college degree in Communications!). Being told "Get a dictionary!" for the hard words is a copout. English is an ever-changing language, and I want a translation that I can easily understand without having to crack open page 2500 of Strong's Concordance or hire an Army cryptographer to explain what "is" is.

I agree, jjbird.

Marry, I pray thee, dear good Christian brethren and sisters: doth the average person that sitteth in the pewes of thy owne church speake the Queene's English as unto their common vernacular? Nay! Her Majesty Queene Elizabeth the first did, but not Queene Elizabeth the Second! MLIL (Most Loudly I Laugheth)!!!

(I'm sure I really butchered that supposed Shakespearean English.)

One surprisingly good translation that I have stumbled upon is one in Hawaiian Pidgin English. Although I'm not from Hawaii and do not speak Pidgin, I understand much of it pretty well. If you are from Hawaii and speak Hawaii Pidgin, check out the online translation at www.pidginbible.org.

A Bible should be understood in the heart language of the reader, hence the various modern translations in all languages.

I use the KJV, however several other versions are easier to read. The World English Bible takes out a lot of uncommon words, but does a good job of leaving the translation in tact. Before you go buy a bible you might want to download a free version or two and read some verses to find what works for you. Here's a link to some bibles and resources that you can download for free:

As some others have said, I use several, but the English versions are NASB, NIV, KJV and an Interlinear. I am picking up an ESV soon.

When trying to dig into definitions of expressions, non-English translations are an excellent resource.

I like the HCSB too. Our Sunday School quarterlies have the HCSB and KJV both, and I typically teach from the HCSB. Really like the way it words things.
I, like most here have a pretty large array of translations that I use for different things.
I heard a lady on the radio say something that I thought was very good advice. She said that when you study you really need 3 Bibles. A Dynamic Equivalency, Formal Equivalency, and a Paraphrase. I think that's great advice for really honing in on the meaning of the passage.

Personally, I use the NIV.

Our church's "official" bible is the ESV. (the one our pastor uses, and quotes from in sermons and such)...and, it's the type found in the "pew bibles" that are in church, as well.

When children enter 1st grade, they are all given a bible from the Pastor....those are ESV, I am pretty sure.

Though, the teachers in our sunday school class primarily use NIV....but, refer to other translations when necessary.

quote:

She was KJV all the way. In fact, she said, "It was good enough for Jesus, so it's good enough for me."

You think alot of the KJV "allure" has to do with all of the "flowery" language? It does sound very "churchy" to use all of those "thees and thous"....And/or the idea that "that's the one I have always used, therefore that's the one that is "right", and others are "wrong"?

People have mentioned omitted verses in new translations? could they be simply omitted verses, when compared to the KJV, that should have never have been there in the first place?
The KJV is simply a version of the bible....written specifically for, and approved by, King James.....right? what makes it the "gold standard" for bibles? Simply because it's been around for a long time?

I read, study, memorize, meditate with the New American Standard Bible.

I think its the best and have one at the office. One in my work truck. My good one at home. And one for outdoors.

I chose it in the early 1970's because it was a good translation and for the cross references. I would not buy a study Bible unless it had cross references. That has been the main way I have and am learning from the Bible in my studies.

My second choice is the Amplified Bible.

But it is better to read a bad translation (Such as Good News for Modern Man) of the Bible than none at all.

For young readers and people that strugle with reading;
my parents were involved in giving out "The New Life Bible"

Our kids read NIV Childrens Bible

I use many Bibles. I usually use the NKJV or the KJV. I also have an NIV, NRSV, HCSB, NAB, and I finally bought an NASB so I've been using that the last couple of weeks. My favorite is probably the NKJV. I just like the flow of it.

Ok......I have three questions......
What Bible do you use?

And......for a struggling read, what Bible would you recommend......(an adult who reads at the middle school level).

And, for your children........what Bible do they read?

So What Translation Do I Recommend?

The first question you need to ask yourself is “Why do I want a Bible” or “What am I going to use this Bible for“? Are you using this Bible for study, reading, teaching, reading to others, leisure, witnessing or a bookend? Bibles were translated for a purpose and you need to know what your purpose is for purchasing a Bible. If you are looking for a “one stop shop” like for study, devotions and casual reading – I suggest you to use what your church is using.

However, if you are primarily using it for study I highly suggest a Word for Word translation. Why? Because, if you are going to study the word of God you probably want to be as close to the original text you can get. Because you want to know what they wrote. So, in those instances a Formal Equivalence or Word for Word or “Literal” translation would be best. You do not want someones “personal” thoughts, belief systems or dogmatics to influence your study of what God wrote. (If you want to read more about “How To Study The Bible please read my previous blog “3 Steps To Study The Bible“. CLICK HERE) One thing to consider when studying the scripture, your NASB is not written in paragraph form but rather each verse is on its own seperate line; whereas a NIV is written in paragraph form so you see the full complete thought. In my studies, that concept has become SO important.

If you are looking just for causal reading, I suggest a Thought for Thought or Dynamic Equivalence. Why? Because they are just an easier read. They give a better perspective. Want a good resource for your reading level and Bible Translation? CLICK HERE or do you want to see the Translation Spectrum/Continuum from Word for Word to Thought for Thought? CLICK HERE.

I suggest everyone should have a Formal Equivalence (Word for Word/Literal) translation and a Dynamic Equivalence (Thought for Thought) translation. It is up to you where you go on that spectrum noted here. The reason why I suggest this:

1. It keeps your study lively. You won’t get stuck in a rut and “think you know it all”. You will see the word of God from multiple facets.
2. A Word for Word Translation will help you know what was originally penned by God through mankind
3. A Thought for Thought Translation will help you during those “tough passages” and also will help you understand the context of a portion of scripture.

Moreover, I would not study a Thought for Thought translation (like the Message) like I would the NASB because, that involves more of man’s interpretation of what the text should say or what the author was trying to convey. My feeling is, it may open up opportunity for someone to be misguided by ones interpretation rather than allow God’s word to settle in. This happens when people listen to preachers but never study the word of God themselves. They get so caught up in what John Macarthur or Mark Driscoll says, that they forget to actually look at the words in the Bible.

So what Do I use? I teach with the NASB on Sundays and use the NASB on Vessels of Mercy. In my studies I supplement my NASB with the ESV, KJV, NKJV, NIV and NLT. I rarely use other translations, although I have electronic copies – I just don’t reach out to them often. When I study and I feel something is not congruent from translation to translation, I go the Hebrew and Greek and do a word study (Primarily through free on line Bible Study Software E-Sword). In my experience, the NASB is the most consistent when it comes to being the closest to the original language.

Praise the Glory of His Grace,
Judson
