Definitely the most stressful jobs often pay the least. Retail, grocery and fast food make you work non stop for min wage and just above min wage.

Sure, you may run into stressful situations, but you can leave your job AT your job. Interesting list at that link. You wouldn't think of things like a curator or music minister being all that stressful.

I'm employed in number 4 and work with people employed in number 8 and ... yup, yup. But not for the reasons they mention. Some of the most stressful things around here (and a check of stuffjournalistslike.com will confirm this) are: * Low pay .... I haven't had a raise in like 2 years and the only reason my huge pay cut (which I weathered for the better part of a year) got reversed is because somebody died. * DOWNSIZING: We have half the number of reporters here that we had a year and a half ago. And who gets to pick up the slack? That's right ... the rest of us, with a large chunk of it shoved on my overburdened shoulders. * Shrinking news hole ... the joy of writing a front page story goes away quickly when your lovely prose gets hacked in half by an inexperienced editor (who works the rest of the time as a reporter. Did I mention they've cut editors too? That said, I'm doing what I'm called to do and am blessed to be employed ... many with my skill set are not. But the skills are very specialized and it's hard to find another use for them. The ground is littered with the bones of those who have tried. Oh ... and I had to work in this business for many, many years before even approaching the median pay ... most of my collegues still are not there.

Sure, you may run into stressful situations, but you can leave your job AT your job. Actually they can carry a fair amount of stress. I've worked in supermarkets before and we've had to meet a rate for emptying a cage and a rate for scanning items on checkouts. Not to mention, you need to make sure that the money is right on checkouts ~ sure it tells you how much change to give, but you need to have your wits about you. The woman in charge of the cash office would haul you over the coals if your checkout was wrong. And working in a supervisory position in supermarkets... NIGHTMARE. My area manager came in one afternoon and started to tell me what I should be doing on my department. I pointed out why I was doing what I was doing and it made him think again about telling me what to do! You can't always leave your job AT your job ~ only time I was able to do paperwork was to take it home and do it there ~ which meant unpaid overtime.

I have found substance abuse and social work to be the most challenging... being afraid of children dying, walking in on the middle of a gang fight (actually happened once), sex-offenders being released and returning to a home full of children, 2am phone calls... yeah, my job has been stressful in the past. On top of that, we have to worry about where to find the money to have the car repaired (no company vehicle) or pay for our kids' after school activities or find a guy who's willing to help me do some things around the house that I physically cannot do. These kinds of jobs are financed by grants, so raises are very rare. There are practically no bonuses, and the hours can be long. But you know what? I'd rather have this job than something like a reporter... I'd rather be behind the scenes than being in the spotlightl.

LOL, these CNN job lists are such a joke. A few months ago, they had a list of awesome jobs that you didn't know about - one was concert promoter, which is almost the same as a special events coordinator, which is now on the lousy jobs list. I haven't held any of their HighStress/LowPay jobs, but I have held a couple of their Awesome/HighPay jobs and to say they sugar coated things would be an understatement. -Dan.

Retail is definately the most stressful job I've had. A close second would be fat food restaurants.

I think you meant fast foods, but the freudian slip is appropriate. retail is stressful, but I was a fundraising coordinator, which is mentioned on the list. Very stressful, deadlines, inviting people, asking for money, people backing out, getting the facilities, the food, keeping records. I worked my you know what off and was eventually fired when they didn't make their goals.

Securities trader isn't stressful? Tell that to the guys on Wall St. when the market stays under 10,000 for another week.

I have taught high school. I did not think it was all that stressful, nor was the pay considered low. Since I have retired, I work part time in a child care center. Now, that is a stressful job with low pay. I am surprised that child care workers are not on the list. Some of my co-workers are the most unhappy people I know. Try spending 8+hours a day with a room of 2 years old for a little more than minimum wage. That's stressful!

I didn't find it stressful at all. Of course at that time, I was mid-teens to early 20s.

Sure, you may run into stressful situations, but you can leave your job AT your job. There are other areas of stress though. You're likely to rely on the vagaries of public transit to get you to work on time, and they can be pretty vague. You're also likely to have a boss who thinks you aren't really worth minimum wage, and could be replaced by a half-trained orangutan if they weren't all operating public transit.

My current job is a mix of the producer, news reporter, fundraiser, and minister descriptions - I manage the public relations department of an international ministry. It is much more stressful than I ever anticipated - the deadlines, the fundraising goals, the events, the spiritual demands of it being a ministry. And I make less than the median pay listed for all of the jobs on CNN's list. The list gave me some perspective though. I didn't expect the median pay for news reporters to be so low, even though the industry has been hit hard in recent years.

I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. These jobs are considered stressful and underpaid? These jobs would have been vacations for guys like me. My first few jobs.... Roofer for new office buildings.... No tile to haul. Just hot tar on a framework building that runs 2,000 degrees in a push cart, running as fast as one can with the valve open and spraying it everywhere with a Florida sun baking you. Then I got to roll out, by hand, 375 pound per roll rock tarp, which is only about 10 yards per roll, and then bending over and nailing it down with a hammer... from sun up to sun down. My crew worked on loading the tar cooker below so it could push molten hot tar up the hose to refill my tar cart for another run. One guy who was being trained on my job so I could take a vacation slipped, the cart tipped and washed over 90% of his body in molten tar. Out of his head with pain, he ran while screaming and before we could stop him, went over the edge of the roof and fell 32 stories to his death. The very unguarded edge I had to stop at in time from a full clip run pushing that very cart, turn on a pin, and run in the other direction, valve fully open. My pay for that job: $5.45 per hour My second job was working for Dayco, compounding rubber. Hazardous Chemical Compounder was the full title. I had to load up roughly 3,000 pounds from 22 different chemical sources, in 110 pound bags that I had to slice open one at a time, and we had to process 120 car sized bucket a shift, or 12 buckets per hour. Yeah, I worked 7 ten hour shifts a week. Overtime was mandatory. Three guys before I was hired were killed on that very job over the previous four years. They got sloppy, mixed wrong chemicals, and even though they were wearing breathers, the blast was enough to rip them apart into fist sized pieces. My pay for that job: $6.75 per hour I don't work low pay high risk jobs anymore since I became disabled. But the list on that website is and will always be a joke to those who truly risk their lives for truly low pay. I myself would have loved making 35K a year doing that, seeing as I worked at it long enough to go completely gray haired before I was 25 years old.... Sorry for the edit. Had a bad flashback where I recalled the guy in the station next to me getting caught up in the mill and having his arm pinched off. I mopped his blood up so I could keep working without slipping.

And in case we're tempted to forget, the job with the worst stress-to-pay ratio will always be: infantryman.

When I worked in factories, we were treated with more respect than when I worked in retail. The factories I worked in were far more 'hot' on ensuring we were given the breaks were were entitiled to. Retail were far more lax and would push to avoid giving you any.

Oh my Oberdan! None of the stressful jobs that I have done were even on the list! Here are 3 that are very stressful too!: 1-Working at a media firm in general. 2-Working at a printing or copying company. 3-Working at a law firm. These are without a doubt very stressful and if you are in support staff, do not get paid very much for what you do either!
