Ok...Recently I started importing my cd collection (approx 1,000) to my PC for the sake of having them at my fingertips rather than having to go to the warehouse to get them. I have been using a software program that I have had for a few years that came with my minidisc player..if anyone out there knows what that it. It is called Sonicstage 4.3. It has worked fine until just recently when I had to run the backup tool...only to discover that it does not actually back up anything. That explanation is on another site. The end result is the dozens of discs that I imported over the last month have vanished from the software thus I am really ill about it.

So, other than the Windows Media Player 11, are there any good programs to archive and index your music collection? All mine is on cd, both commeercially bought and cdrs that I have recorded on.

I use iTunes. You don't have to import songs in the proprietary format, it will also import as mp3's.

I use Itunes. I've used Windows Media Player as well without any problems.

I haven't used it as much as itunes, but WinAmp is a very good program for that. I use itunes for windows because I have an ipod, but it's slow and annoying. It constantly wants to download updates that are a complete new version of itunes and it often asks if it can install other proprietary junk. So instead of downloading a 3mb update, itunes will download a complete new version of itself, which is upwards of 80mb that includes the 3mb update. It reinstalls itself every time, which is annoying.

I use and love iTunes. I've used several different programs throughout the past decade, and iTunes has worked the best. If yiu ONLY want it to backup your music I'd try to find iTunes 7.0 and turn off the updates. 7 was a very good and stable and fast version with not Manu bells and whistles like genius and so on.

If yiu want to syn to an itouch or new iPod, yiu may have to get the current.

Ok. I acutally have some version of Itunes, 'cause my nieces both have one and they use my PC for their Ipods.

That hasn't been my experience at all. There have been maybe four new versions in the past year, and I've always been asked just once if I want to download it. After that it's up to me to go get it. And I also always have the option of downloading the Safari and Quick Time upgrades as well.

Winamp was the name of the program I couldn't remember last night. LOL
