Did Jesus ever experience fear, or did his divinity keep him completely emotionally secure even in the face of extreme torture?

Jesus had spent his entirely earthy life preparing for the cross. I don't believe Jesus had fear but I do believe satan wanted Jesus to be killed before He shed his blood for us on the cross. I believe He was tempted, disheartened, extremely pressured but never fearful for He knew exactly what His purpose in life was to be.

Fearful; maybe not, but certainly concerned as evidenced by the following passage; (Mat 26:36) Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. (Mat 26:37) And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. (Mat 26:38) Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. (Mat 26:39) And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. (Mat 26:40) And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? (Mat 26:41) Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. (Mat 26:42) He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. (Mat 26:43) And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. (Mat 26:44) And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Christ may have been prepared, may have known about all the details in advance, etc but the absolute severity of the events of the coming cruxifixion was certain a heavy weight upon our Lord. Fear, I do not know, but apprehension for sure. Thanks RC

I have to assume that being in the form of flesh, Jesus experienced every emotion that a human can experience. I believe that there is nothing wrong with experiencing fear no matter how spiritual or mentally strong we may be. It only means that we are human. I believe that Jesus felt fear as He contemplated the Romans coming to arrest Him knowing what was to come.

Yes He was fearful. He was 100% Gid but He also was 100% Man and any man would fear what was about to happen, not only the terrible pain of crucifixion, but bearing the sins of the entire race. "According to Dr. Frederick Zugibe (Chief Medical Examiner of Rockland County, New York) it is well-known, and there have been many cases of it. The clinical term is hematohidrosis. "Around the sweat glands, there are multiple blood vessels in a net-like form. Under the pressure of great stress the vessels constrict. Then as the anxiety passes the blood vessels dilate to the point of rupture. The blood goes into the sweat glands. As the sweat glands are producing a lot of sweat, it pushes the blood to the surface - coming out as droplets of blood mixed with sweat."[citation needed] In a lecture, Dr. Zugibe stated: "<b>The severe mental anxiety</b>...activated the sympathetic nervous system to invoke the stress-fight or flight reaction to such a degree causing hemorrhage of the vessels supplying the sweat glands into the ducts of the sweat glands and extruding out onto the skin. While hematidrosis has been reported to occur from other rare medical entities, the presence of <b>profound fear</b> accounted for a significant number of reported cases including six cases in men condemned to execution, a case occurring during the London blitz, a case involving a fear of being raped, a fear of a storm while sailing, etc. The effects on the body is that of weakness and mild to moderate dehydration from the severe anxiety and both the blood and sweat loss." It's not a sin to awknowledge that Jesus was also human.

Interesting question...and thanks kisstheson for that medical explanation. If it is true that he experienced fear, then how does this bode for those who say fear is the opposite of faith and therefore fear is a sin?

Fear in humans is a good thing. It helps us assess dangers, not take too many risks, and think before we act. Fear is a natural emotion created by God in us for a purpose, just like any other emotion. Fear can be real and warranted - we fear punishment and retribution for our crimes, we fear threats from aggressive people, criminals etc ... Or fear can be imagined and unwarranted - we fear the unknown, new places we have to visit, new situations in our lives, new people we have to meet, or we fear change from the comfort we're used to. So fear, by itself, being natural, is not a sin. But how we react and deal with it can be. Too much unwarranted fear could be an insult to God in that we do not trust Him enough to look after us and care for us. Prayers are the answer. Christ may or may not have experienced fear before He was arrested. We really don't know. But what we do know is that He conquered it through prayer and trust in God His Father. Do not be afraid – I will save you. I have called you by name – you are mine. Isaiah 43:1

Read the post above your own. the emotion fear is not a sin. it's what you do with the fear. Jesus gave His fear to His Father.

You do know that the thorns would nearly paralize a man, so excruciating was the pain. excruciating (out of the cross.) Jesus was A MAN. probably what you spoke about was the worst of His sufferings but I'm going with the idea that the pain of the passion also raised some fear in Christ since he wasn't a superhuman.

There could be plenty of non-sympathy-related reasons for god to have done that. What I'm wondering is if, in his heart, god looked at Jesus with genuine sadness, love, and sympathy as he watched the pain and torment he was putting his son through.

To your question, yes. Jesus was afraid in the garden, and was so anxious he 'sweat' drops of blood. But he wasn't ever afraid of rules, men or the world. What Jesus feared in the garden was his Father's wrath on the cross.
