Sunday night I thought R was getting H1N1 like N had, but Monday morning she was fine. I kept her home to make sure she was OK later. Her temp went up a bit by bedtime so she's home again today. Hopefully I can send her back to school tomorrow because she is ready to go back to school.

Aryn said 42 kids out of 225 in Aryn's 6th grade class at the middle school were out sick yesterday.

So far according to our elementary school nurse whom I spoke with this morning, the elementary levels are averaging about 2 to 4 per grade level, grades K-5, but we've had one child that tested positive and he'll be out for the rest of this week likely, testing positive Friday morning. I guess the janitors are sanitizing all the bathrooms every night as well as doorknobs, water fountains and desk and table tops.

No vaccine here yet. Everytime I go to take the kids in I make a phone call in advance to make sure that it will be available when I get there and everytime they've run out before I can even get to the clinic locations.

Went to school today to help out in Art class and ended up on a Lockdown drill with a class of 5th graders. THAT was interesting! Keeping 29 5th graders confined in a SMALL 12 by 12 room with shelving and a kiln and a plethora of art supplies and keeping them quiet! YIKES!!! Thankfully it was just a drill and not an actual emergency! But I did find out that the school has talked to several of our neighbors and if the kids did have to be evacuated that we have 4 homeowners that have opened up their homes to these kids to keep them safe til parents were able to retrieve them.

Blessings,

Garsy

One area school has decided to close today due to H1N1. I haven't heard which school it is but I KNOW it's not ours, I would know about that already. From the short little clip before news time it looked like one of the smaller church schools.

Blessings,

Garsy

Garsy, have you watched The Middle yet?

Any schools giving out the vaccine yet? I just heard that one near us started giving them out this week. I did get some elderberry/zinc chewables today and will make everyone take it. If the vaccine comes to your schools will you let your kids get it?

I haven't yet. Something always seems to take me away at that time.

Here the vaccines are either given at your doctor's office or through public health clinics. If the do decide to take it to the schools AND my kids still haven't gotten vaccinated, then yes I will allow it. I'm hoping that tomorrow when I call the doc's office at 8 AM they will tell me they have them and I will be running the younger two there before school and the older two after school. I just found out that some doc's office have the H1N1 shots and some don't.

It's a good possibility that our little neighbor boy has this strain of the flu. He's only 4 years old. He is at my house ALL the time. Tonight I wiped EVERYTHING down! Especially the blasted doorbell and all door knobs!! This is getting REALLY close to home now. Ethan and Zoe have been forbidden to play with him until the little guy is completely recovered!

Blessings,

Garsy

I guess our area is out of the h1n1 shot, and our local clinic is out of regular flu shots.

I just dont' know about getting the hn shot, I really just don't know.

I feel like by the time the H1N1 shot is widely available it may be too late for most to avoid getting it. Since I don't have kids in high risk groups I probably would not have them get the shot. Also, I think that N had it, so we've been exposed anyway. Of course I don't know if we have developed an immunity to it.

I thought that R was coming down with it Sunday. She had a pretty high temp that day. But then she was much better Monday; maybe a slight temp in the evening. I kept her home again today, but she'll probably be in school tomorrow. I don't think it was H1N1.

We have a four day weekend coming up; I'm glad for that with all the sick kids.

I'd think it would help.

I agree, Dee, I suspect we'll just ride the season out. I don't go out much so I'm not too worried. My dr is pushing it though.

No. dd's BFF has had it and dd was exposed to it then. I'm allergic to eggs, down and just about anything else associated with fowl, so I can't have it.

I'm allergic to thimerisol, so I can't take the flu shot. By the time it's available, I agree, the "season" will just about be over, so we probably won't have our kids take it. It hasn't been as bad in our area as it has in others around us, but we're cautious all the same.

Garsy, I don't blame you for wiping down the house and having your kids stay away for a time.

DeeDee had piano on Monday and that night the teacher called to report that his 4-yo has it. PBee and I walked, so I didn't go in, and DeeDee didn't mention seeing the boy there, but the house, the piano, the panic if I tell her that J has it...

Our school offered both the regular flu shot and the H1N1 flu shot for free, we declined both.

Hubby is on the way now to pick up Dana from school, she was running a 101* fever. She didn't act at all sick this morning, so I'll see what she looks like when she gets home.

How is Dana now?

K said that at the high school 25% of the kids were gone at least one day last week.

Got N and K's parent teacher conferences out of the way. N's, at the middle school, is student led. At the high school we just walk around the gym and talk to the teachers at their tables. We drove to the high school with N and had him read while we talked to a few of K's teachers. Then we did N's conference at 6, and took him home. (We live close and the HS and MS are right next to each other.) We went back to the high school and finished up the conferences. Both kids are doing fine. We kept hearing how quiet K is.

K doesn't like her Spanish teacher too much. Recently she gave one of K's friends a 0 on a quiz because she thought she was cheating. The girl next to her friend turned her paper over. Then K's friend turned her paper over and wrote something on it. And they both turned their papers back over. The teacher said her friend asked the girl next to her to turn her paper over so she could copy an answer. I do trust K's assessment of the situation. Stuff like that discourages her. I wonder how long she will continue in Spanish.

Dana was acting fine when she got home and laid in her room sipping sprite and chicken noodle soup all afternoon watching movies (after she took a short nap) but then her fever went up again around midnight. I gave her a dose of motrin and she woke up when I went in there to get Jacob up for school and seemed fine again. She's still at home today though, and we don't have school tomorrow (teacher work day) so she's got all weekend to rest up. Thanks for asking!

I'm a bit flustered over this whole H1N1 vaccination thing. Ethan has illness/allergy induced asthma. He ONLY has problems when he gets sick OR has an allergic reaction to something. BUT apparently because he hasn't had any doctor's visits for this in 2 years he's not considered chronic so he can't get the injectable. But I worry that he'll have a reaction to the nasal mist form, because we tried that three years ago for the seasonal flu and he broke out in hives AND started getting wheezy. The ONLY reason Ethan hasn't had doctor's visits for this is because we are able to control his exposure to his triggers for allergies for the most part AND he has not gotten really sick in several years.

And the health department is making it virtually impossible for those in the outlying areas of the county to avoid pulling kids out of school for the entire day to get down to where they are hosting the vaccination clinic. I was watching the news this morning and learned that there are already 5 families in line for the clinic that opens at 2 PM! It's not even 9AM yet! I'm not pulling my kids out of school ALL day to wait in line. And I'm not pulling them out of school later in the day to get over there and run the risk of the limited doses already being gone. It's quite a distance for me to travel and risk not being able to get what I need.

So I guess we wait til the rush is over and pray we all stay healthy, or we forget it completely and pray like crazy that the bug stays out of our house completely. I still think Ty may have already had H1N1 last spring when he got so sick and missed 3 or 4 days of school. The Doc didn't say it was but . . . .

Good thing is that Aryn's friends are back in school. One recovered totally from the flu and the other from bronchitis. Absenteeism is up at a lot of schools but according to Aryn, some of the kids that have been out for a long time are coming back now, at least at her school. But Zoe tells me that one of Aryn's friends younger brothers that is in her grade is out of school now. And that mom is a single mom so I pray she's doing okay - she's not the type to ask for help, but she does have a pretty good support system in her brother and his wife and her mother.

Blessings,

Garsy

Right now, our school has more Type A than Swine and the 'regular' vaccine isn't readably available yet. There haven't been any clinics at the school.

I think my ds had it too during the same time. He had all the symptoms and I even called the Dr. which I don't normally do unless necessary. A lady a church told me you can get it again. That's frustrating about your other son. I would think that because he was a history he'd be ok'd to receive it. I wonder why they don't send the vaccines to the schools like they're doing here? I'm still having sinus issues and not 100 % yet, but mine is just a cold.

The musical starts tonight and runs through Sat. and then I'll have my kids back. They've been so busy and dd was sick we've had no time to go to the pumpkin patch. I wanted to get pictures of them for scrapbooking and make a page usig the "then and now" theme. I may have to wait till next year. Oh well.

Thank you for posting this, I almost forgot conferences! I had to check the school calendar, they are next week. Whew!

Did you take him to the dr or call him when this happened? If you can get that documented with a dr note, maybe he will be able to get the injection.

Here the injections are being distributed to the doctor's offices and it was actually our doctor's office that told us he was ineligible. I about lost it with the nurse on the phone but I know that it's not her fault. Their only following protocol set out by the local county health clinic.

Ty's girlfriend and her family stood in line from 3 PM til 7PM before they were able to get their nasal mist done.

There were 6 kids missing from Ethan's class today, 3 from Zoe's, 4 from one 4th grade class I worked with today and 3 from another 4th grade class. The one 1st grade class that had art today was missing 5 as well. That's an average of 4 kids per class - if that is the norm we had at least 20 kids out today!

And all of Aryn's friends are back in school now too.

Blessings,

Garsy

That would be frustrating Garsy, about Ethan. I too am surprised they won't consider him high risk.

Got a note from the school; it had the list of high risk groups. They won't be giving shots at school, from the sounds of it.

Danas_mom, I'm glad Dana is feeling better!

Kath, I'm glad you didn't miss conferences!

I'm cranky.

I'm mad at my mom, mad at my hubby and mostly mad at myself.

I bumped my head, and it isn't even bad and really doesn't hurt but I was talking to DeeDee on the cell phone at the time and I wanted to curse, then I saw stars for a second and then I blamed my sweetie. And they aren't here and I was mad that I was at home alone, and mad I needed to do what I was doing and mad I couldn't let DeeDee know I had done it and, of course none of that is my fault.

But, thanks to mi madre, I end up blaming myself most of all and feeling guilty about trying to be mad at them.

And, I have paperwork to do and I don't want to do it - to the point of CLEANING HOUSE instead. I didn't even nest when I had the kids, but I am cleaning tonight....

Thanks for listening folks

And my head is fine, I feel stupid but it isn't even goose-egg worthy.

Huh. Either the house really needs it, or you really don't want to do that paperwork!

I have to do my taxes this evening. October 31 is the last day to get them in here and dh is away tonight. I always find it easier to get these done when he's not around. But I HATE doing it.
