Yeah that's what I mean when I say I don't get some of the phrases. The words we put together to say what we mean can give you all kinds of visuals. Of course others like that pig in the sun thing is just a mystery all the way around. LOL Here is another one. Willie Nillie

Eating "high on the hog" means you're able to afford the better cuts of meat, which are located higher on the hog.

ORIGINAL: Katie-Scarlet Let the cat out of the bag Straight from the horses mouth I think the first one makes perfect sense. If you've ever even thought about trying to put a cat into a bag, you'd realize once it was there it should never be let out... I wonder about the second... since you tell a horse's age by its teeth, I wonder if that means if you want the truth you go directly to the source for it because horses' teeth don't lie... same reason for the 'gift horse in the mouth' quote really... quote:
ORIGINAL: BugLady Passed with flying colors. We know what it means but why? Where did this originate? And could passing with flying colors be a fliparound of passing with colors flying? Like in a race, you whip by the finish/competition full throttle, colors flying. EDIT I'll add my own I never got... "Up a creek without a paddle". Ok so if up a creek is where you wanted to be, you're where you want, paddle not necessary... if you wanted to be down a creek, lucky you, water flows downstream. Again, no paddle needed. Enlighten me, folks.

ORIGINAL: carebearstare EDIT I'll add my own I never got... "Up a creek without a paddle". Ok so if up a creek is where you wanted to be, you're where you want, paddle not necessary... if you wanted to be down a creek, lucky you, water flows downstream. Again, no paddle needed. Enlighten me, folks. I can help you with that one. Up a creek without a paddle is about a quick, cold and nasty death. Creeks flowing downstream tend to do so with a high velocity as they reach towards a delta down a mountain or steep incline. Rocks redirect the flow to the left and right at various places, churning the current into "white water". A paddle is used like a rudder, to steer around the rocks as you see them coming in the distance, so you don't smash to bits and drown in the rapid current. Usually known as the "rapids" in most places. But they all start from a flowing creek, which appears calm and placid at first and you wouldn't need a paddle. When one doesn't prepare or think ahead, they forgo a paddle while up the creek. They are usually doomed. Severely wounded if not killed, proceeding down a creek without it. :)

Poorer than Job's turkey. I guess if Job still had a turkey after everything else died, it wouldn't know if it was poor or not. That blew my mind! Really?? Hate to be in the same room with you when that happens! What's up her crawl? I think it means that she's angry and we don't know why. Well....I never! Never what?? Spill the beans. I hate it when that happens! Put your nose to the grindstone. Oooh, I bet that hurts! Over the hill. That generally means a person is old. How did they get over the hill? Which hill? Thrilled to death! Was it good news or not?? Scared to death! Well, how come they are still around telling us about it? Old as Methuselah. Really? We need to put them in the Guiness Book of Records! I feel like I've been run through the ringer! That's ONE way to become thin!

I get the one about crying over spilled milk. If you spill a glass of milk, it makes a terrible mess, but the thing to do is clean it up and not cry over something that is already done and can't be undone. That applies to a lot of things in life.

never say never 2 + 2 never equals 5, unless you are very optimistic That Sucks Sucks what? Does it suck worse than a black hole? Thrown under the bus I kind of think it might have something to do with pushing someone out in front of a fast moving bus. Your goose is cooked I prefer pizza

Telling someone to GO PACK SAND???? Hmm? What is a Jive Turkey? The cat's in the bag. Why? When someone adds "to boot" at the end of sentence. Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle! What???

ORIGINAL: BugLady A google search yielded the following explanation: In the Royal Navy the punishment prescribed for most serious crimes was flogging. This was administered by the Bosun's Mate using a whip called a cat o' nine tails. The "cat" was kept in a leather or baize bag. It was considered bad news indeed when the cat was let out of the bag. ... Other sources attribute the expression to the old English market scam of selling someone a pig in a poke (bag)) when the pig turned out to be a cat instead. Hmmm, interesting. The first one more sense than putting a kitty cat in a bag. LOL! I don't know how these phrases stick and become a part of our lexicon. Some of them are rather daft.

There are a couple of phrases that just confuses the heck out of me (being an engineer and all by training). Twice as small Twice as slow Now I know what twice as big or fast is, as size and speed are measurable quantities. I know from explaination that what is meant is to half the inverse unit; half as large, half as fast. But that phraseology I just cannot wrap my head around.
