I wondered about that one as well and just assumed that everyone misquoted the original saying. Not that I know there was an original saying , but just reasoning that one out, so that " I couldn't care less."

Son of a gun - After sailors had crossed the Atlantic to the West Indies, they would take the native women on board the ship and have their way with them in between the cannons.

Hmm. Something tells me that no native women from any point in human history are quite that easy without being given some sort of promises or gold ( which these guys had) and a very good grade of alcohol, which these guys had the best grade of rum in the world.
Anyways, speaking of preposterous, I saw an excellent movie on AMC, which you can see at any time actualy: Nevada Smith the movie
and Nevada goes on a spree of revenge but gets put into prison in the process. A prison very similar to the one with Paul Newman, Cool Hand Luke. A toal bummer except that the prisoners were allowed guest "visitation" from these women that worked out in the field. So Steve McQueen is in the prison bed and a few better than average looking female babes actually go in there and get in bed with these guys. Now I know I'm no Steve McQueen, and believe me when I was a kid and watched some of his movies which I still do and wished I was a cool as him, you'd figure that EVEN THEN, he manages with very little effort to have Suzanne Pleshette get in the bed with him, and do this quite willingly and happily at the same time.
Well, I don't know. I guess somewhere along the road I missed the bus, or perhaps I was in the water and missed the proverbial boat.
Anyways, the movie had a tragic series of events concerning her and didn't turn out the way I would have liked. The way I would have liked is to just stay there in prison and have Suzanne Pleshette come over every week or every other week, which could have certainly been done, as per this movie.
Sorry to change the subject but I rather like my little segue here.

Ding ding ding!

Actually, the current "I could care less" could make sense if you consider it extremely sarcastic.

Hey! The 'image' in the post above actually showed up in my preview pane when I quoted rockominal. Interesting, huh?

I know. It does that sometimes; sometimes not. So far Geocities is allowing the remote link stuff but now, they're threatening to close down. Thanks for bringing that up because now, I must move my cool "pink" gif signature somewhere's else. That will most likely be the British Lycos server I've been using for quite awhile since Bravehost doesn't allow remote linking.
I see what you mean by the extreme sarcasm thing in that if indeed "I could care less" is the original saying that it would come across that way.

This may not fit in well with the topic, but one phrase I just don't get is "I thought to myself." or "I was thinking to myself."

Unless I'm psychic, who else are you thinking to? I can't hear the thoughts rattling around in the heads of others (THANK GOD!), nor can mine be heard (again, THANK GOD!)

Thank you for allowing me to vent about this pet peeve...I was just thinking to myself about how much it bothers me

Why? Because man's thoughts have not kept pace with sanity.

Reminds me of a song from the 80's: A Penny For Your Thoughts, A nickel for your kiss, and a dime if you tell me that you love me.

...and a quarter if you rub the burr on grandma Nora's heel.

(If you don't get it, pay close attention next time you watch 'Christmas Vacation' on TV this Christmas.)

Love this Hebrew one: when the Bible is telling about G-d being angry, it sometimes says that His nose got hot.

His eye is on the sparrow.

I am the apple of His eye.

David was protected under the shadow of His wings.

It don't make me no nevermind.

Slicker 'n scum off a Louisiana swamp. (Never been to Louisana)

Colder than [that eternal place that is supposed to be on fire]

Colder than a well digger's [backside]

You're stroking me (lying to me, kidding me)

Up your nose with a rubber hose. (alternate: ...yellow hose.)

Keep your nose to the grindstone.

In the cat bird seat.

It beats a sharp stick in the eye. (that one I kinda get)

Beat you like a red headed step child.

Ugly on a monkey

500 lbs of sin on a popsicle stick

And there are a bunch my grandad used commonly that there is no way I could clean up enough to post without violating a TOS.

How many times have we said something like, "That thing is pretty ugly"?

What does that mean, pretty ugly?
Is that like something being 'fat slim', or 'tall short'?

Would you be flattered if I said you were ugly pretty? Prolly not.

And if that isn't enough to fluster a person, I'm still trying to figure out why everybody's phone number on TV shows start with 555-. But I suppose that's another thread...

This one I know. It's an industry standard, so that no "real" numbers are said accidentally. There is no real "555".

Was the phrase the whole nine yards given yet?

The bottom line
More fun than a barrel of monkeys
Up the wazoo

hmmm.... I don't know where that one came from either. The only thing that better be in my pudding is chocolate..... and the other stuff that belongs in there.

I think that it may have come from a 1980's TV commercial.

Its a negative, so it means that things are quite ugly instead.

I think in the case of "pretty ugly", pretty means very, as in "that was pretty awful."

I thought '555' was a New York City exchange.

That '80's song just wouldn't have been the same if they'd done it like the TV shows...

"five, five, five, five, three, 'o', ni-e-ine"

I don't think so, but it makes me think of 'the whole enchilada'. Are enchiladas really an appropriate food to express the entirety of something?

How about 'butt load'? After many hours of careful consideration, and sleepless nights, I have come to the conclusion that it somehow morphed from the popular '90's phrase 'boat load'.
