There aren't enough hours in a day for me to hang out in humor and games. I can barely keep up with the threads that I try to follow now.

I know what you mean. I tend to stay in PFY most, and if at the end of the time I'm online I have time to post in humour and games, then I do. Most times I don't get there though.

Ray, I've got a question for you. I've heard diabetics from the US talking about 'counting carbs'. What's that all about? We don't get told about that here. As long as you're in the range of numbers you're supposed to be in, doctors don't seem to mind what you eat.

Oh, and thanks for the dog email! I loved it!

In order to keep the blood sugar levels normal, counting carbs (carbohydrates) consumed at each meal helps tremendously. Also it helps prevent over-eating. 15 grams of carbohydrate is equal to one carb count. A good example is one normal-sized piece of bread is 15g, or one 'carb'.

I've been instructed to eat four carbs (60g) for breakfast, four for lunch and four to five for supper. Often I break that down further and have two carbs at breakfast and the other two for a mid-morning snack. Also I might have two or three carbs at supper and the rest at bedtime. How many carbs one should consume is also relative to how many total calories one should be ingesting per day, so presumable a small female would need fewer carbs than myself.

If I count carbs closely and stay away from the high-glycemic carbs that tend to spike the blood sugar (pancakes/syrup, juice, white bread etc.) then my blood sugar stays in the normal range (with medication...glucophage/metformin) and I don't have to take insulin.

It is the fact that I don't have to take insulin that is a major incentive to count carbs. Without it, the blood sugar would go too high and I'd have to bring it back down with insulin. Conversely, if I didn't eat enough carbs, especially because of the glucophage, the blood sugar would drop out the bottom and I'd risk diabetic coma.

DD#1's step-son has type 1 diabetes. He as an active child has been instructed by his doctors to count carbs and adjust his insulin based on how many carbs he consumes. He is not instructed to limit his carbs like I am. But type 1 diabetes is different than the type 2 that I have.

I have reference books that list the carb content of most foods. Also there's online resources such as The Daily Plate.

Thanks for that. I'm surprised that we don't get taught that by the medical profession. I know about the glycaemic index and that you're supposed to choose from the lower options with that.

I know you can go into diabetic coma if your blood sugars get too low. After I had my gastric surgery, my blood sugars dropped so low that I'm surprised that I didn't. For us, 3.5 is the lowest our blood sugars are supposed to go. I was just screaming the day after I came home, and not well at all. When I checked my blood sugars, I was 1.8 which is way too low.

I don't like it, but I've just started taking insulin. I'd have preferred not to be taking it, but I have to until such time as I can get myself off it.

In our system, 100 is normal. The normal range is from 70 to 120, with an extended range up to 150. If it gets down in the 70's I get shaky. Mine has been as low as 42 and as high as somewhere around 600. When I was in the ER with the heart attack, the first reading they took was 550. A second one was even higher but I don't remember the number.

Somehow I missed subscribing to this thread. I guess that with all the new ones that had to be started that this one fell through the cracks. I am subbed to it now though.

We're babysitting the grandchild today. He's down for a nap right now. It's a beautiful day and I just finished mowing the lawn.

Cool Ray, it is nice out here too. Just fairly unmotivated to get ready to go out yet. I only have 16 unreads to go, this all the way down from 90 something this morning.

It's been a long time since I've been to the playground.

Glad you had such a good time with Alex, Ray.

Mike, I would never let myself get up to that number of subs again. Once upon a time, I did, and I used to feel so overwhelmed when I came into CW. It got to the point that I didn't want to come onto CW again. I went through and cut down the number of subs I had. I had to make it more manageable. Even now though, with a much lower number of subs, I still rarely get to them all.

Well they are much more manageable now that Crosswalk's server has been sped back up. Now I can get to all of them within an hour or two if I wish.

It takes me hours to get through mine, especially if there are people online, posting in the same threads as me.

I'm with you there, Ray. I don't always get time to do all the things I'd like to do on CW.

We had the soup kitchen yesterday. Despite sleeping in until 6am, it was still a very long day. It started out with a blood draw. A pre-blood draw fast is easier while sleeping, so I took the opportunity for an early morning blood draw since I was off w*** anyway for the soup kitchen.

Tooshy and I went out for breakfast at Blob Evans. Despite the power going out a couple times, we still got our food. At the time we thought that the distant lightning was to blame for the power interruptions, but apparently there were some downed lines in the area.

We went to the church and helped Tooshy put together the church newsletter to be mailed.

Met with DD#2's family (and grandson) for lunch at a Chinese Buffet. They had been picking out new shoes for him and the little guy was not too pleased about the whole thing. He had been getting upset and was calling out for me, so he was very pleased to see me at lunchtime.

Then back at church, I started planning the next praise band service...printing out the lessons and picking out songs...preparing for tonight's practice session.

No sooner was that done and it was time to head over to the soup kitchen. Our meal was scalloped potatoes and ham, dinner roll, mixed veggies and assorted desserts. While it wasn't a difficult meal to prepare, the meat was barely up to temperature at serving time. Good thing we started as early as we did.

The turnout was fairly mild, so everyone got fed well and as much as they wanted. We had enough volunteers too, so cleanup went well and I got to see some volunteers that I hadn't seen in a while. We got home in enough time to watch Biggest Loser at 8pm.
