Question:

My sister's baby girl is now 4 days old. She was delivered vaginally and with some drugs given to my sister during delivery but nothing unusual. The baby is very sleepy and is having a hard time waking up to nurse, even when my sister gives her a squirt of milk. They've tried nursing her while she wears only a diaper, squirting milk into baby's mouth for a taste, making sure my sister's milk has letdown before baby gets to the breast (baby is impatient)...

Any other ideas? My sister is struggling with this. The hospital, of course, ran to her aid with a bottle of formula. My sister is tired from the delivery and newness (first baby) and wants to nurse but needs to know what else to try. My mom had 8 of us kids and nursed us all so she is right there helping with this, I have given her tons of advice, our other sister that has nursed babies has called from out of state with advice.

I would love some advice from you ladies for her on what works/worked for you with a sleepy newborn. As you know, time is of the essence in getting this nursing relationship back on track.

(I would also so very much appreciate your prayers. My sister's name is Jessie and her baby girl is Hayley.)

Thank you!
Jeanie

some babies are just sleepy. My first born was this way, and she honestly didn't get a "good nurse on" until she was about4 to 5 days old. Depending on the baby's birth-weight, some babies are just not really hungry for a few days. The fact the baby is impatient when she does nurse just indicates that she is probably just a sleepy baby...waiting until your sister has let down to start her nursing is NOT going to help the problem though. The big thing to do is just be patient....and maybe try laying down with baby and nursing her while they both nap a little (so that sister isn't so tired). How often is she trying to nurse her? She can let up to 4 hours pass between feedings (but no more than 4 during the day) and she can nurse as often as needed (I had one baby that had to nurse every 45 minutes to an hour).

The other suggestions are all really good too.

I'll be praying.

My daughter is allergic to cow milk products and soy milk. I have been successful at eliminating foods from my diet so that I can breast feed her, but my husband raised a good point this morning.

If I were injured or taken ill and had to go to the hospital, we literally have nothing to feed her. I haven't been pumping and freezing milk, as I am at home and don't have a need. She can't have milk or soy based formula can she?

Ryanne, what did you feed your allergy-sensitive baby? Where does one get that hypoallergenic formula? I suppose I can talk to my doctors about that. Should I start pumping now?

I don't want to be morbid, but I wouldn't want my baby to go hungry if something did happen to me. Any advice?

I would talk to my doctor and find out what they would recommend under those circumstances.

Until then...if you can pump...why not get a little supply built up in the freezer for the "just in case" situations...not to mention that will give you a supply for a night out with hubby once in a while.

But I do recommend talking to your doctor about what you could feed her under those type of circumstances....

Thanks, WOF. I did call. The doc said that after breast milk, the best food for a baby like her would be Simulac Alimentum or Enfamil Nutramigen. So, it's good to have that information.

Pumping is a good idea, too, but I think I'll buy a canister of something just to have it in the house for emergencies. I am very pleased that breastfeeding is going so well, though.

I am glad the doctor was able to answer your question. I figured they would know.

I am glad breastfeeding is going well too!

One nice thing? I think this no-dairy diet is helping me to shed a few pounds. Even with no-milk chocolate...

Yeah, you can get the hypo allergenic formula from Walmart or Target. You might even just ask the Pediatrician for some samples, I know our Kaiser Ped always had TONS to give us.

Well ladies, as you know I have 5 children...none of whom are nursing at this time.

My time has become premium priced, so to speak, with homeschooling, working part-time, taking care of my family ,etc.

It is time for me to bow out of this thread...it has been fun!

I just have a few suggestions on keeping this going....

1) KEEP talking about parenting, breastfeeding, etc...here and in real life. the more we talk..the more we know..and the more accepted it will be.

2)KEEP the talk positive...even if you don't agree with someone's choices...talk it out. Women who cannot breastfeed will benefit from the support of another mom...even if she herself is a breastfeeder!

3) Restart the thread when it gets to 700 or 800 posts...it makes it easier and more accessible to "newbies".

4) Enjoy your time with your nurslings...it goes way to fast. My oldest "nursling" is 18..and about to leave the nest altogether!

5) Be blessed...and know that all you do for your child is also done for the Lord....raise each child up to serve HIM...and it's all good!

Thanks for the memories and God bless each of you!!!!!

Well I finally broke down and went to see the doctor. How does this involve breastfeeding? Well, I've been having a lot of pain during sex since I had the baby, but I had a section. The nurse practitioner believes that breastfeeding is causing my problems. Basically I have the vagina of a post-menopausal woman apparently.

Now, Kaiser is very pro-breastfeeding, and they certainly don't want me to stop nursing, but I am in a lot of pain, and it doesn't look like time or frequency was helping any. It's become a real problem between my husband and I. So, she recommended estrogen cream for two weeks, abstaining from penetration for a week or two (and going real slow and easy after that) and using a lubricant that's designed for post-menopausal women.

Breastfeeding has it's price, doesn't it? It's worth it, as long as Greg and I can get through this.

Ruth, the lack of estrogen caused by breastfeeding is part of what caused(in my doctors opinion) the rectocele that I have now Hopefully when you periods resume your vagina will feel better, I know mine does

Definitely makes sense to me, but not something I would have thought of for your situation, Ruth. Amazing how everyone's body is different, isn't it?

I hope this treatment plan will help you!

Thanks, ladies. I was hesitant to post, because it feels like a personal failure, and because it feels kinda wrong to complain about breastfeeding affecting this area of my life. But I'm hopeful that we can get through it.

I hope you know, W.O.F., that your input here has been invaluable - and that pieces you've shared here have been shared across the States (I know that for sure because I have shared your tips with 3 other nursing moms who live in 2 different states).

THANK YOU for coming in here to encourage and share your expertise. I am lucky you were posting here when my little one and I started out. Thank you so much. So, so, so much.....to you and several others who gave help when it was really needed and were always offering encouragement and prayer.

xo,

Jeanie

(((((RUTH)))), I have nothing helpful to add but I will say a prayer for you that the course of treatment helps you out. It's hard enough...you don't need angst or pain with this in addition.

Thanks, Jeanie. Breastfeeding may be fiscally cheaper then formula, but it ain't free! Still worth it though.

The Kaiser OB's are right next to the pediatricians, and the OB department always enjoys seeing the babies they helped care for in utero. Beth was a big hit yesterday.

I have been speaking with a mom in another forum about her baby who seems to be having some digestive issues with bf. Baby is gassy with troubles sleeping. Her ped prescribed probiotic drops. I suggested that she keep a food diary and start with cutting out dairy. She said she will start with that but was wondering about the drops. Since I am not an experienced breastfeeding mom, I thought I'd ask you ladies. Do you think the drops would mask any symptoms? And if she does cut dairy, how long should she wait before introducing it back into her diet?

She should wait at least 2 weeks but probably 4 weeks to be sure. And remember milk proteins are in a lot of processed foods like bread and such. I don't have first hand experience with the drops you mentioned, though.

Soy milk may also cause a reaction; it did for my baby, although I didn't need to cut out all soy. Tomato based products are said to cause a reaction in some babies, too.

The probiotic drops are a fantastic thing to give the baby, but she should probably also consider cutting dairy. The probiotics will the help the baby's gut heal faster if it is a dairy problem.

My little guy has started grabbing/pinching my breasts while he's eating. I've tried unclenching his grip and holding his hand, but he'll grab me with the other hand He also grabs the skin around my neck when I'm holding him, so it's not just a nursing thing... that's just when it hurts the most. Any suggestions, or will he outgrow this as his control over his grip gets better? He has a tooth now, and that hurts, too

Esther is pinching too. I remove her hand and give a firm 'no' the first time. The second time, I put her down on the floor and again say 'no'. So far, the first time has sometimes worked and the second time always does. I think she does it subconsciously sometimes...like a kitten kneads while it nurses.

I have heard of people wearing a necklace and encouraging little fingers to mess with that, but I have not done it.

Yeah, that's what I need... a choaking device I might try a toy or something to hold, though. Hadn't thought of that. I did try saying "no," but Malcolm got scared and just gripped harder I guess I said it a little too forcefully... we're both still learning

My first post in the breast feeding thread. Hello ladies.

I don't have a whole lot of time, but have a question.

Two independent people have told me I should pump to make sure that I don't dry up. I can't help but belief this is an old wive's tale. I don't want to be pumping yet (for my own selfish reasons). As long as I keep feeding her when she's hungry and let her eat all she wants, I won't have any problems, right?????

Exactly right, Christine. It's actually not super advisable to pump at all for the first 6-8 weeks while your supply regulates itself.
