I found Isaac's cradle cap would go away if I would wash his hair with a washcloth. Kind of gently exfoliating it. His stuck around until about 6 months. But it was never so horrible that I couldnt live with it.

David had a heel stick at either his 6 or 9 month appointment to check his iron levels but has not had blood drawn from a vein. I don't think they do the lead test around here unless the child is at high risk of being exposed.

James has very dry skin and he is still peeling a little. I just use coconut oil to keep his skin moisturized.

For cradle cap I use olive oil and a soft baby hair brush before his bath. It worked really well for David and is working great this time too.

We test for lead at one yeard due to the area we live in.

For cradle cap, my doctor recommended Selsun Blue. All you use is a small pea amount. Of course, be very careful that it doesn't get into their eyes. It worked wonderfully. Every few months, with Hannah, we would go without it. The cradle cap stopped coming back around 14-15 months. I loved it because there was not scraping, mess, etc. just wash their hair every other day.

We basically did what Erin said - just shampoo with a wash cloth. That kept it pretty much under control until it stopped on its own. Personally I wouldn't want to use Selsun Blue, even in tiny amounts. Just to harsh (and smelly) for my taste.

I would have tried Selsun Blue with Gabby, her hair was so long that the washcloth and/or comb didn't work. Her's didn't totally go away until 18 months, and I just noticed another patch coming back when I was doing her hair the other day.

We do the iron testing too, Ruth, but our doctor does it with a finger pri.ck at 6 and 9 months, and then a blood draw (CBC) with the lead test at 1 and 2 years. Does everyone have the lead test thing or is that a NY thing?

Mass. does the regular lead testing, too. Both of my older children had venous blood draws for the lead test when we were there.

CO doesn't require the lead testing. My youngest did have some venous blood draws when she was very young, but those were testing her hormone levels and some other things -- trying to figure out why she was so small.

I do the iron testing too. Not only because it's required with WIC, but also because Stephanie had wicked low iron as an infant and no one paid attention to it till WIC caught it.

Gah...this time change has Isaac SO messed up. I, personally, dont mind the time change, just takes some adjusting to, but the poor kid. He's stressed out by the time I pick him up because he thinks I'm an hour late. The when we get home he cries and fusses and whines because he thinks its time to eat, rather than cooking time, then at eating time he's ready for bed. He's not sleeping well at night right now. Argh! I guess its just going to take time to adjust, but I just needed to rant!

Poor Isaac. I think last fall was our roughest. Maybe it is the age? This time around the only thing Josh can't seem to get down is sleeping until his regular time. So he is pretty tired in the evening, but it is easier to deal with now that he is older. The odd thing is though is that he eats, naps and goes to bed "on time" already but then wakes up early. Getting better though. I think last year it took me a week just to get his meals adjusted, then I had to work on sleep.

Met a neat lady today. She had a 5 year old, and she and her husband had just adopted a new baby boy, under 5lbs. Well, she's out of state, but the kid can't leave our state for 2 weeks. Husband had to return to work, so she's in a hotel room with 2 kids. Now, the 5 year old is getting restless, but she's still got a sub-5lbs newborn... in the middle of flu season.

She seemed sensible. Don't let anyone touch the baby and wash hands. But still I tried to give her some suggestions of what to do, since she doesn't know the area. The weather is gorgeous, so outside play is totally do-able. Inside play is probably ok, too, as long as they're careful. Cute little baby.

No cradle cap yet. They told me about that at the hospital when they were teaching Ray and I how to give a baby bath. They sent me home with this brush thing and said to brush his hair every day. Also to use it when he gets a bath and we are washing his hair to massage his scalp. He LOVES that part of the bath. In fact, that is the only part of the bath he likes right now...LOL!

Sharon

My ds hated baths so much that it just got too upsetting and stressful, so I decided on a complete break, and just did strip washes on him for several weeks before trying again. It might even have been closer to 3 or 4 months. It didn't do him any harm not having baths for all that time.

Oi, both kids were over-tired tonight. Yup, I was the mean mom who had to let them cry for a little while. Not to long, but hopefully they'll both rest well now.

With dinner I would have something on hand like some banana or some cheese ready for while I'm cooking to fend off that situation

As far as being whiney for its own sake I would explain, if he's whining for something in particular that he'll get ____ when he asks like a big boy in his big boy voice. If you give into whining he's going to learn that it's an acceptable behavior. Children learn with repitition which means consistency on your and your husbands part when it comes to unacceptable behaviors.

Well, I was the mean mommy that made my son decide to not sass me...and it was a long painful process for him. I started with 25 jumping jacks...and went up from there every time he sassed. Ended up he did 2275 total...he decided to change from jumping jacks after he hit 346 and went on to arm raises (hold a broom out in front, up over head, then back down to waste equals 1). BUT I think I broke through...by the end he was smiling and saying he thought he was growing muscles...and he has gone on to do the chore he was sassing me about before. Seriously though...2275!!!!! I thought he would stop when I said I would double it from 250 (which, before that I went up in 25 sets)...but he didn't stop sassing until I was to over 2000. WOW. I really hope that is the end of that.
(Oh...forgot what thread this was...he isn't a baby, but still Ruth, you aren't in the mean mommy category alone tonight!!)

I was pretty sure that wasn't Jack or Justice you were talking about Sarah! Hope that lesson sticks for a while, otherwise you will have a very muscular boy on your hands. I do like the PT approach for discipline. Have to stick that in the "Mean Mommy of Big Kids" file.

Erin, Hannah has been fussy a lot in the evening as well. She fusses from when I get home until dinner time, about an hour. I didn't think to associate it with the time change. Last night, I fed her frozen blueberries (cut in half) while I was cooking dinner, and she was happy. I thought it was because she is teething, and the frozen food felt good. She may just have been hungry. Babies are so hard to read at times.

Ah, did I mention that Beth is able to stand independently? She looks at me likes she's considering walking but just isn't confident enough yet. Little lady is growing everyday. She loves to give big hugs, even when her brother tries to wrestle her to the ground, she just holds on to him and goes for a ride!

Greg says that she's been doing so much lately it feels like she's been 9 months forever, but she'll be a whopping 10 months on Sunday.

Go Beth! I think our Bethany is going to need to be the same way - Josh is a rough and tumble kid.

That is cute Beth. Hannah loves her big brother too. She gets so excited to see him. She is a little lover. She's a kisser though more than a hugger. I can't believe she is going to be 1 on Monday. Times flies.

Is it normal for newborns to have very dry looking skin?

All three of my babies had peeling feet after they were born. And we didn't bathe Jael (nope not even sponge baths) for the first month of her life.

someone posted in the SAHM thread with some baby related stuff, and Kath sent here over here, so this is my post in response to that...HERE is the original post if anyone else wants to check it out.

quote:

Hello,

I need some help on how to get sleep. I have a 5 week old and a 2 year old. I am hardly sleeping at night then I have to be right back up early with my 2 year old. For some reason she hardly takes naps now. I put her in the bed but she is constantly getting out. She's usually in her room talking and playing for a couple of hours then it is time for her to eat again. I also have to patch her eye part of the day and she takes it off while in room. Another thing is potty training. So I have all these things going on while not getting any sleep.

tip 1: give up potty training right now...not worth it and it won't kill her to wait a little bit longer until you can focus more on her. So just give it a rest for now
tip 2: don't make her "nap", do quiet time instead...or movie time. In our house quiet/movie time is after lunch until 3. Even if she is just laying there reading, the point is to let her and you rest, even if there is no sleeping.
tip 3: do you have someone that can come help you maybe a few times a week to help get some rest while they watch the kids or take them out for a walk
tip 4: right now, survival is the number one important thing. If it doesn't have to do with you or your kids eating or sleeping, then it isn't of dire emergency and doesn't need too much focus of your attention.

quote:

I was thinking of putting her in daycare for a few hours a day to help her socially(another story) and structure wise.

IMO, kids of that age don't need "socialization"...they need mom and dad and family structure. You can give her that at home, even if it's nothing more then having meals at the same time every day right now.

quote:

I asked about changing formula and she said they never do that they would just do things like add less, more or add cereal to that same type of formula.

NO...you should NOT add cereal to a baby's bottle because of gas that the formula they are on makes them gassy...or to "make them sleep". NOT GOOD ADVICE!!!!!!!!

quote:

She said that he had to stay on neosure for at least 6 months since he had low birth weight.

Is there a reason you are being told what you HAVE to do in regard to your own child? Unless there is a reason (like child services being involved), then NO ONE can tell you what you HAVE to do with him. Obviously something isn't right for him with that formula, so switch him. You don't have to have the dr's ok to do that. You are his mother!!

quote:

He never got better and was constantly fidgeting after eating so I changed it to the gentle plus good start yesterday and he has been much better, he even had a bowel movement right after.

YAY!!! Good call mom!!!! Evidently it's just what he needed.

I've started doing a Mommy's Morning Out with my 2year old every Friday morning, and I've been very pleased with it. For starters, I've known these people for over a year, and the place is more like a toddler gym, lots of different types of games and physical activity, which is something my boy really needs. I do think he does well with time around other children (aka socialization); I think it is good for him. It also gives me time alone with my baby daughter, now 10 months old. But once a week is the max I'd do at my son's age.

I agree that structure can come from Mom and Dad having a rough schedule for meal times, bed time, etc. The daycare decision is an intensely personal one. It is not necessary, per se, but some do find it beneficial. Others have no use for it at all. Kids tend to turn out ok from both homes.

Beth continues to have a runny nose and cough, and has twice coughed so hard that she coughed up the breast milk she just drank. She's sleeping a good bit, but I'm still concerned for my baby.

Well, Beth is anemic... runs in the family I guess. Mom and I have always been borderline at best. Her levels are only slightly below the "yellow line" so to speak, so we'll be watching her diet carefully to up the iron intake.

And... it seems as though Beth finds it fun to put the blocks back into the bag where they are stored. Is this what having a girl means? That putting your toys back is fun?
