Amber, I can't "hear" whiny. I can only hear big girl voices. Whine is flat out ignored by me. Now if they are sick or through my actions they are overly tired or hungry, I ease up. But otherwise I have taught my dd it is useless.

ORIGINAL: Krislynx I can't decide if we are coming or going with the potty idea. The other day he came over to me all upset that he was poopy and wanted to be changed. I changed him and he was just wet so I asked if he needed to go and he said "not in bathroom". Sure enough 5 minutes later there was a poopy diaper. I guess at this point the best thing to do is encourage without being too pushy. It seems like he is understanding the feelings but isn't quite ready to commit to the potty. Perhaps the big toilet is just too much for him, and he might be happier with his own (portable) plastic potty, especially if it was a special design that he chose himself, perhaps.

ORIGINAL: manda59 Who or what does he bite, Erin? Anything. Its weird, he'll get all excited, run over to me and grab my shirt/pants/whatever in his teeth and pull. He does it with his own shirt, his socks, anything. Sometimes he'll make enough contact to get ahold of skin. He rarely, if ever, bites when nursing. Its like he is confused on giving kisses or something. Because sometimes he'll give the open mouthed kisses then they'll turn into a bite, not always, but sometimes. You have to really watch his kisses. WHen he does bit I pull him away, and kind of 'pop' (not really hitting, just tapping) his cheek and say "NO" or "We dont bite" He usually laughs.

Erin My ds went through a phase of biting; one day I knew he was going to do it so I quickly grabbed his own hand and put it in the way instead! He never did it again! lol I'm so bad!

biting. I'm still working on breaking him from that one. Jac (5 months old on Thursday) bit me three times in a row today while nursing. I yelled out pretty loudly each time (it hurt!!) and he cried. My poor baby...but Mommy is *not* for biting! Ouch.

Whew! What a morning. Beth had her delayed 9 month checkup. Both kids got the H1N1, and Beth got her first from-the-vein blood draw (standard tests). Her arms are so chubby they had some trouble finding the vein. It wasn't fun, but it's all over, and Beth is resting. Nathan is watching Curious George before lunch. In the early afternoon we go to pick up Greg. Beth's weight gain has slowed considerably. She's 23.5lbs and 29.5 inches tall, so she's really shooting up in height.

AFAIK over here we don't have any tests that require blood to be taken from a baby. My dd had a blood test in the summer (she's 16) and that's the first blood test she's has in her life (bar the newborn PKU test).

It's Iron tests, Manda. I know a lot of moms here wouldn't consent to such a thing, so I hesitated to even post it, but I felt ok about approving the tests.

Thanks, Ruth, I've honestly never heard of that being done before as standard on a baby. Over here they just tend to look at the fingernails and the insides of the eyelids to see if they look healthy. You clearly had a particular reason/concern for wanting to know this, so I'm not about to question why you had it done.

We do the iron testing too, Ruth, but our doctor does it with a finger pri.ck at 6 and 9 months, and then a blood draw (CBC) with the lead test at 1 and 2 years. Does everyone have the lead test thing or is that a NY thing? Here, if you wait too long after a year to do it, you get a "nice" note from CPS reminding you to get it done. I haven't done Esther's yet, but will before her 15 month appointment next month. I may get a letter before then.

Yes, definitely! Especially face, hands, scalp. Where does Derrek have it? You could try applying a very gentle cream after washing/bathing him (unless it's his scalp). Do you have aqueous cream over there? Are you using any scented products at all on his skin? If so, that could contribute to the dryness, as could possibly the detergent/fabric conditioner that you're using.

Josh had heel sticks for iron levels and at 1 month for extended jaundice. He has had 2 real blood draws for lead levels - they are strongly recommended here. But there are a lot of old houses with lead paint (including high income historical ones) so that is probably why they encourage everyone to do them. We are going to do both kids until 3, possibly until 5 depending on how the levels go. We have some lead paint in the house that we found while I was pregnant and painted over, but I still want to keep an eye on their levels just in case. I did think that lead checks were common in the US for all kids at least once between 1 and 3, but I guess I was wrong. All my nieces and nephews (except the 11 month old) have been screened at least once. And the other NE kiddo was tested 2x to see how the level changed. Krsi

I don't think they test routinely here for lead, but there isn't much point since the majority of our area was built after lead paint was banned.
