Now today she's been snoozing in people's arms, but it's Saturday, so there are more adult arms around.

Nathan had his party today, and it went very well, but I think he had a little 'too much birthday', as he was in tears by naptime, probably from over stimulation. The party didn't go to long, and we gave him time to wind down afterwards, but it was still a lot. Even he kept saying "Nathan tired" It's nice of him to tell us, I guess.

Awww...that's too cute! I'm glad that the party went so well, even though you had to pretty much rearrange everything.

With Jael's birthday we're going to have the zoo in the morning right after breakfast and opening a couple of presents (she requested this, lol). Then back home for naptime, then the rest of her few presents and then off to Red Robin for dinner (another request). The only other person besides our little family coming is my sister. I feel a little bad for Jael since no one has ever made an effort to come out and visit for her birthday...just Hannah's. Oh well...it's their loss.

Thanks for the heads up on my inbox, Kim. I cleared it up.

That stinks about Jael. Small family parties are nice. I certainly wouldn't want to get much bigger then we had today, but I'm happy with the way it went.

I caught myself up!

After reading all your posts on food I feel a little ... wrong. Seriously, Jadon eats pretty much everything and anything. The only thing he's refused is fried ocra (i just thought I'd see what he thought of it) and something else I can't think of. I give him cereal some mornings with whole milk. He doesn't get much milk at all - just drops, really, but he does get some. I don't water down the yogurt I give him and he LOVES yogurt. He loves all flavors! He eats all the meats we eat. Jason even gave him ice cream (gr) after he turned 1 and he went NUTS over it. I mean NUTS. He only had a few small bites, but Good Lord he was fit to be tied when he couldn't have anymore. My only pause with nutrition is what to supplement my breastmilk for/with. He's still bfing, but it's not as often and I really think I'm getting to the point where I want to be done.

Liquids are hard for me. Jadon will only SIP water. He's a stinker, but he LOVES juice. Any kind of juice, but especially juice with cherries/strawberries/yogurt based. Does anyone know how much I should give him out of those small juice containers you get in the baby aisle?

And, with eating/sizes - Jadon might JUST be hitting 20 lbs and almost 30 inches in length. He's a tall lean kid. He's also working in his 8th tooth! He's the picture of health and thankfully his tummy/intestines are perfect. He's done nothing but grow with the food we've given him. But, I read some hesitancies in here and that makes me second guess all that I've given him. The only thing I delayed were strawberries and peanuts until he was 1. He's fine, but I still am hesitant to feed those two things to him. He had an allergic reaction to strawberries when he was younger, but he's never had that again no matter how much I ate or let him sip/drink/taste ever since then.

I tend to agree with Manda that if they are reaching for it then they want it... maybe even need it at that point. Start small and build up.

Eh. Gabby eats everything we eat, Janine. Even things that people don't think of as food for kids like curried shrimp or lentils, lol. We did avoid TONS of things with her in the beginning but she(and I) have documented allergies. Honestly though, what we eat is healthy and whole, not much point in limiting her, IMO. Although our diet is different then the average American's anyway... We don't drink any milk, no soy products(except soy sauce, and we don't avoid soy lecithin anymore), and we don't eat much wheat although we aren't gluten free. We cleaned up our diet ALOT when she on the anti-allergy diet and just haven't looked back.

Nicole, how is Mary doing now? Did those 2 teeth come through?

Upon reflection, we have only had 3 strangers tell us that they thought Adam was small. Three. It's my beloved MIL that is grating on me - and I love her to pieces but I am tired of hearing about it. I was a small kid, too. 27 pounds at 3 years old. I don't have my baby book so I don't know what I weighed at 1 but my kid is FINE and it just is disappointing to have my MIL make comments to DH or me about it. DH called her the other day and apparently said everything but "Do you think he's okay?"...hinting, I guess, at "Maybe you should take him to the doctor to get him checked out."

I told DH that if she makes another comment I am going to politely tell her "Would it make you feel better if he were fat?" Honestly, that is what I am going to say and I am not going to feel bad when she gets taken aback like "Well, no, I wouldn't feel better, but..." My parents (who raised eight children) are not concerned in the least about Adam's size - and by the way, he's not small, I don't even know why people say that...I really don't get it. And yes, I am sensitive to it. It has been a whole YEAR of feeding my child around the clock via breastmilk which has been no small sacrifice for me (or any mother who feeds her child round the clock however that is achieved). I really don't want to hear about it when I have gotten up every single time in the middle of the night - even still - and fed that child till he didn't want any more, no matter how tired I was, no matter what time I had crawled into bed, no matter what I preferred to be doing - so yeah, it sticks in my craw because it just feels like one of two things are being said:

A. Are you feeding him ENOUGH? or
B. Something is WRONG with him or he would be chubbier.

Enough on that but heck yeah it bugs me. I have never sacrificed so much every single day for one individual in my entire life, I am tired, I am a good, dedicated mom with a healthy kid who nobody would blink at if he weighed two pounds more. People can just back off.

Stepping down from my soapbox now. Thank you for letting me get that out there. I just needed to blow off that steam.

Jae,

My husband has some food allergies that don't run in his family, and quite possibly came from early exposure to certain foods by a well-meaning parent. For us we have done enough research to choose FOR ADAM to hold off on some things. Only after his birthday was he given any dairy in any form at all even though seasoned moms here on CW have said many times you can give them cheese or yogurt under 1 year. I believe that to be true but I also am the one who has to feed this child until he is an adult and if he ends up with some kind of food allergy due to something I gave him too early it's not like anyone here is going to come and cook for him or be up with him at night if he's uncomfortable, KWIM?

I have always learned so much from the moms here and I still do learn things here on a regular basis but my DH and I have to do what WE feel led to do with Adam, weighing in all the factors of parental allergens, food ingredients, etc.

My DH is currently on Day 8 of a juice fast. Tonight he juiced cabbage and beets, beet root, etc., and then he drank a glass of it for his "dinner". It has helped him tremendously with his back pain (a healing event in some ways and also great for him to get his extra 15 pounds off). He knows a lot about nutrition and about macrobiotics, live foods, the food cycle, etc. You can only imagine that we take food knowledge we've learned for US and apply it to pint-sized Adam where applicable. For example, my husband installed a spigot for filtered water on our kitchen faucet. Anytime we cook with water or drink water it is from that spigot because our city's water has trace amounts (and by trace I'm saying trace) of anti-depressants in the water (people flushing old pills). We don't take anti-depressants and we don't want to be exposed to them via the water, at least not on a very often basis as we drink the most water while in our home.

One of my sisters just LAUGHS at us for this. Calls us treehuggers. Well, we're NOT treehuggers by any stretch and treehuggers would be insulted if we tried to join their group, but when I dilute Adam's yogurt we use the filtered water. It's just an important thing TO US and not something we run around trying to coax everybody else to do but the system we've put in place here for ourselves we have just adapted for Adam, too.

We know a lot about digestive enzymes because DH has problems sometimes with digestion (like a steak and potato will send him to bed with a sore stomach but not a half of a steak with a steamed vegetable)...we just know this stuff so we apply it where we can. It's not like we expect to convert the world or anything. We eat at Chipotle' when we want to. We eat regular foods, too.

And to be completely honest it wasn't like Adam NEEDED to eat from our plates. Yeah, he shows an interest in things we eat but he would show an interest in a bottle of beer, too, and we wouldn't give that to him, KWIM?

For us the magic number was reaching one year old and then going slowly forward with a few more things. Before he turned one he ate plenty of foods but they were fruits and vegetables because that's what we were comfortable with. And I think that is the key: parents do what they are comfortable with and so long as all the children are being fed and are healthy then it's all fine and good despite the different paths everybody takes to get there.

Jae, I think you're doing just fine. Jeanie, I also think you're doing just fine. And I know my wee ones are just fine with what I am doing...and if they weren't, I would change.

Esther slept from 11 pm to 6 am!!! She hasn't slept more than 2 hours at night in a month, maybe two. Please let this be the start of a new trend. LOL I did bathe her right before bed, so maybe that is what did it? I don't usually give her a bath at bedtime because I am exhausted by then, but hey...if it makes her sleep better...

Almost all city water has traces of prescription drugs, there was a big study done on it last year or the year before. It's such a problem because of the number of prescription drugs that are flushed because there is really no good way to dispose of them. You can flush them, then they leach into the water or you can throw them out and have them contaminate the soil...

You reminded me Jeanie that I've been meaning to buy a water filter, I should add it to my list so I quit forgetting.

Oh, and a great cookbook we have been enjoying is The Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook, you guys would probably like it as well.

Jae, we fed Nathan things like nuts and eggs and whatever else he liked after his first birthday. My BIL said that we were playing Russian roulette with our son's life, but we don't have those allergies in our family, and he was fine. It's BIL's kids who don't eat hardly at all.

But Donna is right. We all have to do what is best for us, and our kids should turn out ok.

Jeanie, I wonder if your MIL's real concern is that Adam doesn't go to the doctor for checkups, and she's latching onto his weight as something that is "wrong" with him, even though there's nothing wrong at all? We filter our water, too.

I've already gotten a few questions about whether I should put Beth on formula because of the dairy allergy.

Donna I'm glad you got some sleep! Beth is sleeping great these days, but I know full well that could change when teeth and rolling start.

Nathan is having more and more nightmares lately. He does wake up, so they're not night terrors. But it is strange that my 2 month old is sleeping through the night , and my 2 year old is having so much trouble. Nathan is usually a good sleeper.

I wouldn't ever say that to someone, but it is in some ways true. The rise of peanut and egg allergies is really, really high and those are quite deadly a lot of the time. The kids who are getting the allergies don't even always have a family history...

Gabby was exposed right around 16 months? She grabbed my peanuts and started munching away.

Are you going to avoid those things with Beth since she has a sensitivity already, Ruth?

Isaac turned 8 months old on Sunday! During church Sunday he held himself up on the back of the pew and stood the whole time! He's got strong legs and back now he just needs to figure out what to do with them.

I took Isaac out shopping this weekend and kept getting asked how old he was, then followed by the "is he trying to walk yet?" No...he's not even sitting up on his own yet. Its odd, in some ways he's an 8 months old and in other ways he's a 5 month old. I know he's come so far, but it just gives me mixed feelings when I have to explain, I usually get the "Oh, he looks good though!" comment.

I stepped out of my comfort zone with food a little this weekend. I let Isaac have a couple bites of my muffin when he asked for it. He's also started signing "eat" to us too.

Oh yeah, and on Saturday night Isaac slept for 12 HOURS and only woke up then because I woke him for church! And last night he slept a good 10.

Erin

My ds started pulling himself up to stand at 9 months, but didn't walk until he was about 14 months old - and he wasn't born early, in fact he was 4 days overdue! My dd was born 2 weeks early, yet she sat unsupported at 8 months and was walking by 9 months!

If I were you, I wouldn't feel any need to "have to explain", except perhaps to just say that all babies are different, and do different things at different times.

Ruth, we had trouble with Gebre having night terrors and nightmares. it didn't actually stop until he *finally* could verbalize them to us. Something to do with a banana full of bugs. That was a *long* year of long nights, between two and three.

I honestly don't know, Ryanne. We'll think long and hard about it. Is there any indication that sensitivity to one type of foods makes a child more likely to be sensitive to another type of food?

I have mixed feelings about it, even if the rate of allergies doubles, the odds are still fairly low for a child with no family history of that type of allergy. It turns out that my dad had to drink goats milk when he was little as he was allergic to cow's milk, but he could eat everything else just fine.

Maggie, I hope we don't have a year of this!

I think dairy and soy are the only ones that really go hand in hand, but having one sensitivity does make a child(or adult) prone to others.

Gabby's only real sensitivities are/were soy and milk(not all dairy, just milk). Milk protein is the only real known and documented allergy in my family, although soy protein powder does make my throat itch/burn. For us it was just far easier to avoid those foods for a year- 18 months then to expose her, have her develop an allergy, and then have her spend the next 5 years avoiding them.

I think the AAP's new stance is that exposure doesn't cause allergies, but I haven't found a Pediatric GI or allergist who would agree. It probably depends on who you talk to...

Ruth, how old is Nathan?

My son started with the night terrors at age 1 1/2 or 2 and still gets them. They come and go. His last bout went on for a solid month. He is 10 now. So it is really hard to contain him. He wakes up frantic, gets out of bed (even from the top bunk) and runs around the house doing things he wouldn't normally do such as jump on the couch, pull me down the hall, etc.

The terrors would come on at the same time every night, 10pm, about an 1 hour and 15 min after he went to bed. I read somewhere that if the kid is awoken 15 min or so prior to their "episode", they won't have it. The terrors have something to do with a specific state of sleep. My son, Derek, stopped having them by the time I found this information.

Cappuccino - I am glad Gebre was able to verbalize his dream, and it helped.

Exactly. Erin, Caden came a week late. He's 10 months old now and only just started crawling a few days before he hit 10 months. He's perfectly happy and healthy.

I think it is sad that people often feel a need to "compare" babies' progress. I ran into a lady at BRU a couple weeks ago. We started talking and it became apparent that she had no confidence as a mom at all. She is a SAHM, but her husband wants her to put their 9 month old baby into daycare... not b/c of money, but because he thinks she is behind or something compared to the other 9 month olds. She looked happy and healthy, she was waving bye-bye, had just started crawling. I felt so bad for this poor woman. She kept saying she wanted to stay home with her, but she didn't know if she was doing what was best for her (as far as keeping up with the other kids).

You know, no one is going to care who walked when once they are older.

Janine, could I just ask why you're concerned that Jadon will only sip water? Is he constipated? Is it particularly hot over there at the moment?

Any juice that is given to a baby should ideally be diluted - perhaps about 1 part juice to 4 parts water.
