Sandy does have tiny babies too, and I have seen for myself that they are just as healthy as my kids. I would never make comments to her or anyone else about having tiny babies just because mine like to be big and chubby. Neither of us can control how our babies grow. Erin, he is doing so well! I am sure you're not even going to be able to tell he was a preemie in a year or two! Awesome!

Mine are big and chubby, and my nieces are teeny tiny, but that's just the way it is. The only reason I worry about my nieces is because they are extremely picky eaters, and I worry that they aren't getting a well balanced diet. When I say picky, I mean they often just don't eat, not that they are going to town on nuggets and ice cream. If they ate well and still were tiny, I wouldn't care at all.

That surprises me too. Four months seems really young. We didn't even think of cereal till 6 months or later. About the only solids I gave them were those hard teething biscuits. Mike didn't even want cereal till 8 months, he only wanted mommy milk. Yeah...we did child led solids with Jael and it turned out she wanted to experiment around 6 months or so. But she was sitting up on her own at around 4.5-5 months and showed a very very strong desire to taste something other than my milk. She's such a foodie still...you should have seen her face when she had her first bites of whatever veggie we gave her (we don't do cereals)...she was like, "Now this is what I'm talking about!" Child led solids doesn't really involve feeding them purees, just FYI- Baby Lead Weaning. Jeanie, Adam seems like my nieces. Gabby has passed my 28 month old niece up in height and weight, they are 9.5 months apart. I picked up Ella up the other day and thought I was going to throw her through the ceiling, she is SO much lighter then Gabby(who is a chunk at almost 30lbs and about 34-35 inches tall). I think people make "he's so little" or "she's so big" comments just to make conversation. It can get frustrating when we are in a group of kids/parents because they tend to expect Gabby to act about 8 months older then she really is because she's so big. I've gotten several comments about her speech and yeah, if she was 24-26 months then she would be behind but she's ONLY 19 months and she's pretty close to where she should be for her age verbally and very far ahead physically. But eh. It doesn't really bother me. ETA- Ruth, I often wonder the same thing about my nieces. My oldest one is almost 5 and only about 35lbs, she is so thin that she really doesn't even look healthy. I wouldn't doubt that they are malnutritioned.

I think you're right about people just wanting something to talk about. I often will make a point to tell people Nathan's age, so that they don't expect him to be older and more advanced. Wow, Gabby is a big girl. Nathan is around 35.5" and around 30.5 lbs, but he's 24 months old and a boy! I guess I lucked out that Nathan eats such a varied and "grown up" diet, whereas my nieces were/are still on the bottle till age 2 for much of their nutrition and very little solid foods. Compared to Nathan's diet, it's just weird for me to see my nieces eating so little. Is Gabby able to jump yet, both feet together? When Nathan learned that... he was the happiest toddler in Georgia.

Thanks for the support, ladies. I know that Adam gets enough to eat because I know everything that he eats. He is teething (trying to get tooth #4) and he crawls FAST and EVERYWHERE. And he walks hanging onto furniture all day long. My husband and I laugh about how he is working out all day long (and basically he is). My concern is not for his size (doesn't bother us, I'm sure he will be about 6 feet tall like his dad and 170) but I do get irritated sometimes when people ask how old he is "He just turned a year" and then they say "He's so small!" Well, people, he is not microscopic or you wouldn't have been able to see him in the first place. He is plenty tall he is just a skinny baby. Not all babies are meant to be roly-poly. What really bothers us is sometimes you hear this TONE from people like '12 months? He's so small! My babies were NEVER that small..." and the tone is like "Are you feeding him enough? Do you feed this baby?" If Adam were at all unhealthy I would be in the doctor so fast. He has never been sick a day in his life, his eyes are clear and bright, he is super alert, he has a great appetite. I should mention that all 4 of my brothers are tall and thin. My youngest brother is 6 feet tall and weighs 150 pounds (finally, and it took him a long time to get to that via lifting weights, he just does.not.gain.weight). Anyway, it's just the tone that bugs me. My kid is adorable and so are the babies that are bigger than him. I'm just not sure why people set out to make you feel bad. We are developing a thicker skin about it, though. I'm sure the parents of babies on the other end are just as irritated "Oh, he's so BIG!" "Yeah, thanks, all we do is feed him chocolate cake and butter sticks all day. Yeah, you heard me: butter sticks." Jeanie

It really had nothing to do with my breastfeeding. quote:
He's a skinny tall kid. He eats plenty (nursing and solids) so I'm not concerned. I was a small toddler, too, but man, sometimes I get comments and it starts to bug me that people make comments. Jael turns 2 next week and is 'petite' but not for lack of eating or drinking about a gallon of milk a week. She eats a varied diet and loves fruit especially. I'm not sure how much she weighs but I'd bet it's probably right about 20lbs. or so. But she's not unhealthy and is advanced for her age in the milestones stuff. The comments bug me too...when she was 16 months old we were eating at a restaurant and a lady looked at me and smiled and said, "Oh! She's so cute! How old is she? 6 months?" I just looked at her calmly and said, "Um...no she's 16 months old". We've also gotten the "Is she old enough for crayons" comment too... *sigh* She's just small...there's nothing I can do to change that and it grates when people are so stupid as to make comments like that. Hannah turns 4 in July and is close to 40 inches and less than 35lbs. Go figure!

Right, but baby led solids(as we call them, since it didn't have anything to do with weaning) means allowing your child to eat what they can, as they please. No purees or spoon feeding. Basically, you watched for a cue and then fed her purees, it's entirely different then the true Baby Led Solids method of feeding.

Lol! Maybe not doritos, but Gabby was sucking on steak at not much older then that, but not really eating it.

Why to chicken? Most babies won't choke on solids because they can't get pieces off that are small enough to choke on. It does seem scary to hand you baby a steamed broccoli florette, but they really aren't likely to choke. I was on a baby led solids forum for a little while and nobodies baby choked *shrug* For us it seemed like the most natural method of feeding. Gabby got the nutrition from as many solids as she was physically capable of eating which is all she really needed anyway. It's quite rare for a baby to need the nutrition of solids before they are capable of eating them on their own. And it hasn't made her picky or malnourished, lol. The girl was consuming curried lentils and rice as fast as she could get them from the bowl to her mouth by the time she was 11 months.

Josie is 16 months and dropped her morning nap a few months ago (I think). She then started taking a nap around 1 or 2 everyday for anywhere from 1 hour to 3 hours. Now sometimes she takes a morning nap (falls asleep while playing) and either a short afternoon nap or none at all. That happens for several days then she goes back to just an afternoon nap. Wondering if it's a growth spurt. It's no biggie, just didn't want to overlook anything I should be worried about. Do any of you do (or did) baby signs with your kids? Josie knows 13 signs. Trying to get her to truly associate the signs with something she wants, needs, or just actual objects or animals is another story. But it's truly given her a vocabulary and she'll be playing and then just start signing words. Too much fun!

We teach them please, thank you, eat, milk and more. When we teach them we sign the sign while we say it. For example if I asked Hannah or Jael "Would you like to *eat* *more* *milk*?" I'd sign each of the words as I said them. They catch on pretty quickly. Jael still uses the one for eat when she says eat...it's too cute. :0)

David is 9 months old and 24 pounds. I always get the "Wow!! He's so big!!" and it is very annoying. That is always the first thing someone says. The comment that upset me the most was from a woman at church. We were both in the nursery and she was talking to another woman in there. She smoked during her whole pregnancy and her little girl was just over 5 pounds when she was born at 39 weeks. She said "I am so glad (little girl's name) was so small when she was born and not fat like her baby." And she gave me a dirty look when she said it. David refuses to eat anything but purees. We offer him some of our food or some other "real" food at every meal, but he does not seem interested at all.

Erin, green beans can be stringy and hard for them to eat without teeth. Stick with things that will dissolve or fall apart in his mouth at first...cheerios, those little fruit puff things, small pieces of banana, chunky applesauce or mashed potatoes, elbow macaroni, peas/carrots (I buy the frozen kind and just nuke what I need). All that stuff is also great for them to master fine motor skills...picking it up themselves. But you can just feed it to him for now. Esther's first solid-solid was saltine crackers when Brian had his leg surgery. She was miserable and I had not brought anything to feed her. I let her hold it and do it herself and she had a grand time, which allowed me to eat my lunch without having to get her to stop fussing. Emily, I wouldn't even dignify someone like that with a response. Grrrr. Your baby was not fat. He was big. And with a lot less complications likely than her baby, if she was smoking the whole time!

Emily, I presume you're feeding him the purees? I'd suggest that, at the same time as feeding him his purees (which you can start to make a little thicker and chunkier, perhaps mashing rather than pureeing), you put a few items on his plate/tray in front of him, eg a few Cheerios, peas, rice, pasta, perhaps raisins, one or two bits of whatever you are eating. Eventually curiosity will take over and he will pick one up and eat it. It may take a few days or weeks even, but it will happen.

I have been offering him things like that for over a month now and will continue to do so. So far, he doesn't seem to want them. We put the bits of food on his tray while we eat dinner and he just plays with them. When we are done eating I feed him his mushed up food. Then I hand him off to Chris to get a bath and I clean up all of the dinner mess. He has a bottle after his bath and then goes to bed. I make 99% of his baby food and have been making it thicker and chunkier now that he is older. He does fine with it and eats a lot. His favorite foods are chunky applesauce and sweet potatoes.
