Good Morning Jewels, is your real name Rebekah?

My morning is going ok. I wanted to start a new thread about the scripture that talks about staying away from the appearance of evil, but I cannot find the actual scripture on Bible Gateway at all. Oh well.

Morning Mike;

Probably the reason you can't find it on Bible Gateway is that the only version that phrases that particular scripture exactly that way is The King James. The scripture is 1 Thessalonians 5:22.

"Abstain from all appearance of evil."

In the ESV, which is, in my understanding, the closest current translation that is in existence, 1 Thessalonians 5:22 says

"Abstain from every form of evil."

Here is what the KJV Bible commentary has to say about the scripture:

Paul also reminds them that they should continue to abstain (Gr apechō) from every possible kind of evil. What Paul is calling for here is balance; Christians should neither be overcritical nor gullible.

KJV Bible Commentary, 2482 (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1997, c1994).

And here is old Matthew Henry's commentary. I love to read his commentary, though it's language is quaint and antiquated as well as sometimes very hard to understand. This time I think it's quite clear.

7. Abstain from all appearance of evil, v. 22. This is a good means to prevent our being deceived with false doctrines, or unsettled in our faith; for our Saviour has told us (Jn. 7:17), If a man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine whether it be of God. Corrupt affections indulged in the heart, and evil practices allowed of in the life, will greatly tend to promote fatal errors in the mind; whereas purity of heart, and integrity of life, will dispose men to receive the truth in the love of it. We should therefore abstain from evil, and all appearances of evil, from sin, and that which looks like sin, leads to it, and borders upon it. He who is not shy of the appearances of sin, who shuns not the occasions of sin, and who avoids not the temptations and approaches to sin, will not long abstain from the actual commission of sin.

Matthew Henry, Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Whole Bible : Complete and Unabridged in One Volume, 1 Th 5:16 (Peabody: Hendrickson, 1996, c1991).

Does that help?

Good morning Shallbe, yes that helps a lot! Maybe I do not need to start a thread on the subject now. I just remember reading in the past to abstain from even an appearance of evil. So this could be translated as don't go into a liquor store or bar. Do not have female roommates, etc. because this would give the indication of "an appearance of evil." but anyway.

How are you doing this fine Saturday morning?

I'm glad if that cleared things up for you. In answer to your questions: I'm busy, as usual. About to leave the house for our typical Sat. grocery shopping, catching up/running errands sorts of things. I do have to leave earlier than usual because GP1's car is on the fritz and we have to drop her off at work. While I and GP4 run around doing stuff, GP3 will be at dance class for a couple hours. Some of that time I'll be at the studio practicing for a masterclass I have to sing for tomorrow.

I slept in a couple of hours (until 7!) so now I'll be behind in getting menu made up and getting house work done. ARrrggghh.

Thanks for asking! How about yourself?

I went to bed about 1:30-2AM, then was back up by 5-6AM. Been here on forums ever since. Listened to a couple of Christian programs online, which I had heard on the radio yesterday and today as well.

Focus on the Family had a show on first borns. I have a real lot of the traits mentioned on the program.

That would be bad.

Edit to be more clear: Having a female roomate would be bad.

Because of moral reasons or because of male/female differences instead?

For self preservation from both.

But seriously, one of the biggest mistakes someone can make is having an attitude of believing that it would never happen to me. Unfortunately, we're all human and very fallible. No sense in putting yourself in a situation that would make things difficult...things I've learned the hard way.

No Popsicle, for you it is not bad at all! But Ray is indeed right, unless if is strictly a living situation (not friends) and nothing else.

I think most times we become friends with those we live with. Friends or enemies anyways

That probably depends on whether one is male or female.

Some very interesting stuff here...I would never have a male roommate...Unless it was a pet of some kind. Would that appear to be Sinful???

Of course you can have a female roommate if you are female, silly.
