My DD got her ears pierced 6 weeks ago. Today is the day she can change her earrings and we can't get the backs off the ones in her ears. ANy suggestionis. I am thinking of maybe using a little oil. Any suggestions.

Dip a cotton bud in some surgical spirit and use that on the front and back of the ear.
Try and loosen the butterfly by trying to rotate it.

What is surgical spirit? Would that be like rubbing alcohol. These don't have the butterfly style clasps. They are like a tube.

I don't know what you call it over there (though yes, it does contain alcohol). It's what they use in hospitals to clean an area before surgery.
So are the earrings studs or sleeper types? or neither?
EDIT: it's Surgical Spirit BP, and it contains virgin castor oil, methyl salicylate, diethyl phthalate and industrial methylated spirit. It's used to cleanse skin before injections or surgery and is sterile. I don't know what your equivalent might be. What were you given to cleanse around the wound after the earrings were taken out? (and to use around the earring area during the 6 weeks)?

I would not use oil, it'll just make the backs harder to get ahold of. Your problem could be one of two things, or a combination...the backs of starter earrings sometimes have a deep groove and are hard to get off, and there may be crustiness from the healing of the ear. If you use the stuff they gave you to clean her ears, lots of it, and just try to get a good grip on the back, that should do it.

She ran out of the cleaning fluid a couple days ago. I have dabbed rubbing alcohol all around it. The clasp does spin on the post but won't come apart. I could probably pull hard enough but she's so sensitive to the pain she won't let me. It may come down to that but I'm looking for gentler means right now. I had thought of the fact that oil would make it hard to grab

If it's spinning freely, it's probably that those backs are made to be really hard to get off. Can you take her to where she had it done and have them try? You probably want to get more of the cleaner stuff anyway, just to have on hand.

How about getting her to do it herself?
I would also suggest you get some more of the cleaning fluid (or buy whatever your equivalent is of our surgical spirit BP) anyway, as the ears will be gungy when you get the earrings out and will need cleaning (as will the earrings).
Is she going to be putting in other gold earrings, or earrings made from other metals?

Grr. Smack myself on the head. We went to Walmart, where she got them pierced, and was told to just pull hard. She wasn't allowed to help take them off. However, I forgot to get more cleaning stuff. I think the pain is just from the manipulation. We'll just keep playing with them.
Her new earrings are just some inexpensive thing she got at Walmart. I did buy her a set of nicer fairy earrings for Christmas that are gold.
We'll just keep playing with them for now...unless someone has another bright idea.

I'd say that it's VITAL that you get some more cleaning fluid (or buy something like surgical spirit from your chemist - over here that's usually way cheaper than any branded product) because even once the earrings are out, you will need to clean around the holes front and back, and ALSO, as the new earrings aren't gold, her ears might react to them and she could get an infection. I can't wear anything other than gold (and can't even wear some golds)otherwise my ears get sore. My dd can wear other metals for up to 2 hours before her ears start to hurt, but then she has to put her gold ones back in.

Sounds like it's similar to our rubbing alcohol from what I've found online. I do have that.
She has tried taking them apart herself. This is my wimpy child when it comes to pain

did you try telling her that if she can't get them off herself that you'll have to do it, and it may hurt her more that way?
That's what my mom did with me in these sort of situations. It usually meant that I would try my absolute hardest, and then resolve myself to having to deal with the pain from mom doing it. But, one way or another I made it through all these things myself. Also, if you can't get them off, and she won't let you do it... try another trusted adult (like your mom) or someone similar who she might let do it without as much "whining".

I would just leave them for another couple weeks and give them a bit longer to heal. When we took DD's starter earings out after over a year of them being in, I had to pull really, really hard to get them apart. Have her lay on her side, grasp the front of the earing with one hand and the back with the other and just give it a good yank.

I am thinking now to let it go for now and just play with them every day and try to get them out. This is essentially what I'm doing: having her tilt her head down with one side against the table and pulling on each part of the earring in each hand.

Those starter earrings are hard to get a hold of and get off. You just have to get a good grip and pull hard to get them off. There is like a groove that the backing is in and it takes a good pull to get it off.

Leave them in until Christmas and then let the new earrings be incentive to get them out/off?
I know I've always had to leave starters in beyond 6 weeks in my ears. They just weren't ready.

With my dd I used witch hazel. Then since I noticed a little bit of blood, we cleaned them and put them back in for a week. I think she had them in a total of 10 weeks.

My daughter got her ears pierced almost 6 weeks ago too, how funny! We haven't attempted to take them out yet. I'm looking at Christmas. For now, we are still cleaning and spinning.
Be careful about putting inexpensive earrings in, especially right away. We were told to only use earrings of the same metal for 6 months, yellow gold in her case (they also had white gold).
And I would think rubbing alcohol would be fine for cleaning. That's what I was planning to use if we run out of the cleaning solution.

Okay I don't know her age but if she was really young and took baths the warm water would help loosen and clean her ears as well and right after she got out then try to take them off...
If she was older I would tell her to try or you try to take them out when she got out of the shower the holes are more loose then... or maybe even use a warm washcloth and hold it to her ears for few mins ... but I am guessing they are little balls or something I would grab ahold of the ball then try to slip the back off that way your not hurting her ear. Instead of just trying to pull it off.

Are her ears still getting gunky? If they are, I wouldn't try to take the earrings out because they haven't healed yet; especially if your dd is having pain. I know it is hard to be patient with new earrings sitting there... I think that my dd's ears took a bit longer than 6 weeks -- IIRC it was more like 8 weeks before we took them out.
