We have parent teacher conferences on Monday. I told Ryan about this and he got this concerned look and said, "A routine meeting?!?" The last meeting we had the teachers were pretty punchy to label Zachary as one who may have a hyperactivity disorder. I still haven't found Rae's jeans that she cut. I'm gonna have to do some searching in her room. Our restaurant made the front page news. Check out the link in the October womens chat.

Speaking of movies, I regretted letting the kids watch Back to the Future. I typed out a long note for N's teacher tonight. He got in trouble last week for not moving when a teacher asked him too. He wouldn't write the letter of apology because I don't think he got what the problem was, so couldn't go back to science. So he had to stay after school and make up work. Then he spent an hour and only got one word looked up. I hate forced letters of apology. I also hate missing instructional time. His teacher wants the kids to be responsible and to bring us the planners (we don't ask). So N didn't show it to me Friday when there was a note. I told the teacher (today on the phone) I'd like to know about problems sooner, and she referred to the note I didn't see. So I told her (in the note) I was just going to go ahead and check the planner myself so I don't miss anything. He usually shows me, but somethimes it's late, or even in the morning. The teacher also suggested that she may tie unrelated things to N going to the AR parties, which I am opposed to. AR is his best thing, and I don't want negative associations with that. There was more, that that's enough highlights. Dee

Great article, Nicole!! The kids' Fall Festival at school is tomorrow. I really didn't feel like it, but I stayed up last night to bake some peanut butter cookies (for the Cookie Walk) anyway. I hope hubby is able to go up there when it's their grades' turn to go, they look forward to having him there every year. Usually he volunteers to help in a booth, but they never sent out notices for parent volunteers this year. *shrug* Jacob wasn't feeling well yesterday, and this morning threw up a couple of times. I'm just glad he can wake up enough to look for the "sick bucket" - Nathan never wakes up until after he's puked. What fun. Dana got chosen as a Kiwanis' Terrific Kid again this year. She was once already before in kindergarten. So now hubby will have a new 'Parent of a Terrific Kid' bumper sticker to put on his car, the other one is on his truck which he doesn't drive anymore.

Noah had Bible day today, where they dress up as a verse of the Bible and their classmates have to figure out the verse. I forgot until this morning, so we went simple...Jesus wept. Colored a beard and mustache on Noah, and then some tear drops...washable marker, of course. Tonight is a fundraising dinner for the school. I made my first ever pumpkin pie for them to sell. It looks good, smells good...I just hope it tastes good. The only kind of pie I have ever made was pudding pie and I want to learn to make some other ones, so figured pumpkin was an easy one to start with. I used cheater crust though. I would love to be one of those little old ladies who makes great pies some day. Maybe I should ask one of them for their recipes? I'm thinking of putting Hannah in the preschool at Noah's school. The second kid is half price, so it would not be that much more $$. I know she would love it, and then I could schedule all Brian's PT when she is there. Right now, we go for walks while he is in there, but it's getting colder and will be winter soon. The thought of having Levi, Esther, AND Hannah in the car for that long...

Donna - I can't make a pie crust. My dough is too elastic. I don't have the right feel for it. Breads are fine, but that dough just springs back time and again. I can do fillings though... A quick pie recipe. One premade pie crust. One can of premade pie filling. Let the crust warm up and open onto a cookie sheet. Dump the can of filling in the middle, leaving about 3 inches of crust all around. Beat an egg. Pick up the edge of the crust, fold it in over the filling and go around the crust. You will need to brush any part that overlaps with egg to stick it together and it will end up with a hole and the middle. Brush the exposed crust, sprinkle on sugar (and cinnamon) and bake about 20-25 minutes. You get a small pie that takes no time. Another one. Cut the crust into quarters or sixths. Brush the edge with egg, spoon filling on one side, and fold the other over. Pinch (or fork) together around the edges. Poke the fork in the top once or twice, brush with egg & dust with sugar. Bake. Now you have lunch box, single serving pies. Those are GREAT at bake sales at flea market type events because you can eat them right then and there. No silverware, no plate needed.

I got a call from dd's school Wednesday night. It turns out that she is missing her zero period a lot. The class is at 7 am and she is so not a morning person. She's been getting all of the assignments in, and she is there for the tests, but she is not attending the class. Instead she is spending the morning in the bathroom crying. There has also been a lot of fighting going on at school. Yesterday there was a very serious fight that involved one of her friends. Her friend is OK now, but he has some pretty bad bruises around his neck from where the other guy tried to strangle him. Homeschooling is looking better and better.

Roberta...what time does your daughter need to be up in the morning for a 7:00 am class? Why does school start at 7:00 am? Are they on a split schedule (I was in an overcrowded school and jrs/srs started school early and finished at 12:30 and sophomores started at 12:30 and finished at 5:00).

Monday is going to be a tough day at Ty's high school. Just last night an 18 year old senior lost control of his car and crashed it into a utility pole. He was killed. His 15 year old passenger is in critical condition at the hospital They released the name of the 18 year old tonight, but they haven't released the name of the 15 year old yet. Ty could very easily know the 15 year old or at least know of them. Brian and Ty are watching some classic horror movie tonight. SO glad the little guys are in bed. Blessings, Garsy

DD didn't want to go to homecoming. She didn't have a date because she's not allowed to date until she's 16 (in January) and didn't want to go with the girls she hangs out with. She was telling me that it looks like there won't be a Junior Prom next year for her class. She said that the places where they could have a prom won't do proms anymore because of the problems the kids have caused in the past. I suggested the high school gym. She said that she might consider talking to the principal about that, except she really wants to be homeschooled next year.

Garsy...I'm sorry for the loss of the boy's life and I hope that the other student's condition is improving. Deb...I'm glad that your dd had fun at homecoming (sorry about the "hot" comment). Roberta...I'm sorry that your dd is having problems with her class and internet homework. ...... It's gotten cold here...we finally had to turn on the furnace. We have a praise that the furnace is still working!! Not saying the same for one of our cars that is losing a transmission clutch and is in the shop for a transmission rebuild (and we still have a payment on the car ). I'm thankful that the shop was available to take the car right away and hopeful that it will be repaired this week. We've got 4 jobs and 2 school schedules (5 people) all relying on one car now.

Ty did say it was a bit tense at school today. According to the news the 15 year old girl is improving and should be released from the hospital sometime later this week. They still haven't released the girl's name, but I'm pretty certain that kids at least have an idea of who it could be. It's getting cold here at night too. I try to keep the heat turned way down during the day and then turn it up a bit at night. Julia - Hopefully the car will be fixed soon! That wouldn't be too bad around here since I can be home if I had to be. We'd just have to adjust car pool arrangements a bit. Deb - glad homecoming went well! Ty hasn't even asked about going to any dances or the like yet. Roberta - Gracious! I thought 7:30 was an early start! Ty would NEVER make it if he had to be awake and ready to learn at 7 AM. Everyone else - Hello!! Hope all is going well! Blessings, Garsy

I try to keep ours at 58 degrees during the day...we get warm sunlight here in the winter (even when it is cold) so the bricks on the house help keep us warm. I don't think I could keep it that low where you live and maintain an even temperature.

I usually have it set to about 65 during the day and turn it up to 68 at night. Garsy
