Yup, there is more drain drama but I'll post it in there. I am making Spanish Rice. They have decided upon "themes" for "mission sunday" where they have a meal and distribute groceries to all who come, have drawings and stuff. I was the ONLY one to sign up to bring the rice. GASP! They left only ONE LINE for somone to bring a roasting pan full of it! Can you believe it? I don't even OWN a roasting pan, and have no idea how to make spanish rice except for in the crock pot. My biggest frustration is that I am single, yet I am expected to bring gargantuan portions. Meanwhile, families bring as much as I do ... and the vast majority are the people they're trying to reach out to, so they bring nothing ... ARRRGGHHH! It's really not fair to those of us who are impoverished.

Di, if you can't afford it, don't bring it. Give what you can, but if you can't then don't.

Oh, not planning on it ... I am just making a 6 quart crock pot containing 2.5 times more than comes in a regular "recipe ..." which is more than I will eat. That was all the rice I had and all the room I had in my crock pot ... rice is cheap ... It just infuriates me that singles are expected to bring big portions and families bring the same or less .... The lady I called said they are talking about soup and sandwiches EVERY SUNDAY. Sigh. They tried this before and it didn't work ... I have a lot of frustrations with the church (including the lack of live worship lately due to a lack of people who can play instruments) and am seriously thinking about visiting other churches.

I've found that microwaved rice comes out pretty well. I usually buy mahatama arroz amarillo or some other brand, stick it in an appropriate bowl with some water - put the lid on leaving it a little slack so that it will have room to breathe as it cooks - and I put a plate underneath the bowl. I usually use one of those mixing bowls (like for cake). It usually takes about 20 minutes and I'm done (3 minutes on high, 17 minutes on 50%). Of course, then you add the vegetables, olives, and chicken (if you are making arroz con pollo) after the fact. Just trying to share another way that you can make rice in case you decide to not use the crock pot one day.

Well, I sell Pampered Chef and have ordered a rice cooker ... but of course, that is not "mom's recipe ..." Next month, it will be another "theme" but I have a show that is 76 miles from my house ... so I won't even be there!

Di, I hope you can get that sink of yours sorted out soon, and without a lot of cost. I don't know whether it's a cultural thing, but I tend to take along extra food to pot lucks, even though I'm a single. I always prefer to have more than enough food than not enough. I freak out if I don't feel like I've got enough food. Then again, if you've got limited resources, like so many of us singles do have, then you can only give what you can.

Well ... I always have ... but I just really don't understand why they expect one person (even if it's a family) to bring a whole roasting pan of food instead of having 3-5 families bring a 6 quart crock pot. Anyway ... dealing with some family stress ... long story ... let's just say the plumbing is the least of my worries.

((((((((((((((((((((((((DI))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Sorry things are going so rough for you right now. Tricia, can you use the green tomatoes for some kind of tomato sauce or something? I'll have a look in my preserves book to see if there's something that only uses a small amount of green tomatoes. I don't know of anybody who does a lot of canning and that sort of thing over here these days. My mother used to do a lot when I was a kid. Nowadays, it's easier just to go to the store and buy ready made. We don't live near markets where we can get the produce we want, and buying in bulk at a supermarket can be expensive. It's only just been in the last couple of years that I've played around with making jam and marmalade. A friend gave me a recipe book a couple of years ago for preserves etc. I'd never done it before, and my mother had never taught me, so it's been a learning process. Not too many disasters though.

Hey Above_All............I will pray for the opportunity......that God will speak to you if it is to come to pass or if not why........I will also pray for your bible time and that you will be able to incorporate more exercise into your day......... I have found myself spending more time on here in the evenings then I ever have before.........it use to be I was rarely on the computer at night preferring to be outside or doing something with the girls..........but now that I am taking classes and how to study I am online most evenings..........the positive.....before I even knew I was going to take classes God gave me a lap top so that I could get online while outside.......and at night away from home. God is so awesome......not only does he know the future he prepares for it by fulfilling a need even before you are aware of the need.

Hi, I have a question for joy2give2u, can you put the whole link for this museum - Menno_Hof. For some reason my computer isn't opening the link. I have always been interested in the Amish community and have visited them a couple times (once in Pennsylvania and once in Ohio). And I've heard all kinds of stories and *stories*. (Am I allowed to post here? The title says Reunion Thread. My apologies for barging in. I am just interested in the link.)

Jess yes you are allowed to post here......... I would suggest reading the OP for this thread and any other thread you might be posting in.......in the OP (first post) you will get a pretty good idea the purpose of the thread and what is or is not acceptable. I also want to welcome you to singles. I hope you find our community here inviting as well as a place to call home. I noticed you do not have a profile open to the public. Would you mind telling us a little about yourself? There is a thread in singles suited to first time introductions......I would love it if you would post a little about yourself there........here is a link........ RE: Introductions/Bios/Welcome As for the museum.......here is the link written out.........http://www.mennohof.org/..........I hope you enjoy.

Ha ha john_o Guess what everyone???? I think I am actually starting to believe I just might not be as dumb as I always thought I was....... I am doing so well in math......all those equations with x's, o's, a's and b's are making sense........... All these years I have believed I was so dumb because math never made sense in high school........though I got a's and b's I never really knew what I was doing...I was just figuring it out in my mind......and hoping I had the right answer........showing work was my down fall. Who would have thought it was not that I was stupid but that my math teacher, who spent more time discussing baseball then algebra, was the problem not me........ I am so happy tonight.......a 100 question test and I only missed one........at the beginning of this class I had no clue how to even start doing the problems and now I am doing the advance ones...... Can anyone tell how excited I am???? Did you know there are rules to math and when you follow them it is really easy?

I made the spanish rice ... but without the chicken .... Welcome, Jen, here's a complimentary hot chocolate for you! And welcome back, R8ch! Love gushes to ya! My brother raises cows and recently sent 2 cows away ... he previously asked me if I wanted half a cow and said, "ask me in October ... " of course, I don't have that much money but he'd probably let me buy some meat from him. Trishy ... I can so relate .... I talked to someone today who USED to go to my church ... she told me the sad story of her departure ... and it brought to mind another friend's similar story ... Roomie, who has his own issues with my church and pastor, heard a bit of the story and said, "THIS IS THE CHURCH YOU WANT TO GO TO???" I've been hearing similar stuff from my roomate about my church for months ... and the latest straw that is straining the camel's back is the switch to CD worship b/c we are so short on instrumentalists ... they still have a "worship team" but we sing along with the CDs. I keep going back and forth between thinking, "I could do this at home" and "why don't you." KWIM?? So .... I have nothing going on at church as far as my "ministries" go this Sunday and feel a strong desire to visit other churches. I found one that sounds really interesting. Please pray that my roomate also feels led to visit along with me and that God provides clarification.

Hey Rach! Welcome to the newbies! Tricia, I was going to suggest frying those green tomatoes (what you can eat now) and slicing and freezing the rest for future use but oh well. I know it's not healthy but we had them all summer...it was our big splurge! LOL I'm taking Josie for her pictures today. She must be teething because she's been so fussy...hoping they turn out okay! Not much else going on at the moment.
