....gotta love the Southern Baptist Convetion!

stellaluna -> RE: Life Way Christian Stores Pull Gospel Today Magazine (9/24/2008 10:22:36 AM)

I think that's a bit silly and downright shameful to not even communicate with the magazine's publisher.

Peter_Gunn -> RE: Life Way Christian Stores Pull Gospel Today Magazine (9/24/2008 10:23:35 AM)

Fine with me...as long as they pull everything else off their shelves that is contrary to the SBC's theologies. There should be no charasmatic material in the stores, either, by the way...and I do believe I've seen that sort of literature in them!

A little consistency, please?

buckifn -> RE: Life Way Christian Stores Pull Gospel Today Magazine (9/24/2008 1:55:51 PM)

who cares?

mapachito13 -> RE: Life Way Christian Stores Pull Gospel Today Magazine (9/24/2008 2:59:26 PM)

What reference in 2 Timothy are they referring to in the article? The only one I could find that would even remotely be related to the subject of women ministers was 3:6-7.

So what's the SBC's objection?

leonfigg3 -> RE: Life Way Christian Stores Pull Gospel Today Magazine (9/24/2008 4:32:58 PM)

Something tells me that there is some sort of poer struggle going on within the SNC.

Why allow women to go to smeinary then tell them that they can not preach?

Why was there no problem a couple of years ago when the magazine wrote of one female pastor, but this year there is a problem when the same magazine does an artcle on a handful of female preachers?

iluvatar -> RE: Life Way Christian Stores Pull Gospel Today Magazine (9/24/2008 8:30:08 PM)

Whether or not I agree with the SBC, their decision, or the way they handled this, the author's understanding of the first amendment is fundamentally flawed. The Bill of Rights describes limitations on THE GOVERNMENT and its abilities to control or limit, among other things, the press. It says nothing about a particular chain of stores choosing to carry or not carry a particular magazine.

quote:

She was angered by Lifeway's decision but made it clear that she didn't serve the bookstore or even the Southern Baptist Convention. She made a commitment to serving Jesus Christ and was not about to back away from her call to ministry because a male-dominated organization decided that its interpretation of the Bible calls for a woman not to be in the pulpit.

Well the Southern Baptist Convetion aren't they Oboma supporters?

Not at all, I dont pay attention to stuff like that, and is why I was asking.

But I did notice that a few of the covers on the magzine had pictures of pastors that are known to be supporters of Oboma...

Agreed. Sounds more like another attempt to pressure an evangelical denomination to "conform".
It's an SBC store and they should be able to pull, push or whatever they want.

You must be thinking of another denomination.

A poll by LifeWay Research showed that 80 percent of Southern Baptist pastors support McCain and 1 percent back Obama. Fifteen percent were undecided.Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission: "I am not particularly happy with this particular candidate," [/i]

Greetings

You must be thinking of another denomination.

I definitely did not have all the facts together

Let me show ya what I did..

First I punched up this from the OP
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/09/23/martin.hairston/index.html

Then I went here to take a peek
http://www.gospeltoday.com/

And the first face I saw was Paula White,
….Which brought to my remembrance the email I sent retracting any further support of the ministry because of what the Lord showed me a couple of weeks ago here
http://truediscernment.wordpress.com/2008/08/25/randy-white-of-without-walls-megachurch-supports-barack-obama/
http://www.onenewsnow.com/Election2008/Default.aspx?id=225054

And then TD Jakes cover pops up on the magazine, and as we can see in the article it makes no mention of the issue of homosexuality or abortion; but just a stroke on the mere fact that a black man has made it… in the good ole USA! And doesn’t seem to care as to how he is making it….
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/06/04/jakes/index.html
http://www.onenewsnow.com/Election2008/Default.aspx?id=130938

After that I just did a simple search by entering in the name of a person.. here, oboma
And it’s amazing what’s comes up!

The only thing I did not know was the position of the SBC, and as you have just shown me, they are opposed to one particular candidate,

At least I have my 2 witnesses that is required by the scripture to make statement,

So after I related these facts above; was wondering if perhaps that has anything to do with the real issue of the removal of the magazines off the shelf ….
Which seems promote more backers of the candidate that the SBC has in question.. then not.

Since Lifeway is a denominationally affiliated enterprise, they have every right to restrict what they sell based on doctrinal issues. Being a recovering Southern Baptist, I would guess the SBC is more worried about women in the pulpit than a Democrat in the Oval office.

As they should be. God will hold them accountable to their faithfulness to His Word, not the temporary fortunes of politics.

Agreed

From the article
quote:

This is the kind of nonsense that drives more people away from religion. I suppose it's fitting that this story would come out the same time as Bill Maher releases his religious documentary, "Religulous," which skewers all the major religions for their dogma. I'm sure he feasted on positions of the Southern Baptist Convention.

I hear this kind of thing more and more in Christian circles. Have we become so immature and insecure as Believers that we now fear the world's opinion (especially Bill Maher's, FGS!!) more than we fear our Lord's? If Maher disagrees or even ridicules a position or conviction of MY church, I would take it as confirmation from God that we are in His will.

LOL, I've been trying to recover from being So. Baptist for such a long time. What is your affiliation now, if I might ask?

To me, this is just one more reason the SBC is becoming totally irrelevant to my world.

colliefan -> RE: Life Way Christian Stores Pull Gospel Today Magazine (9/26/2008 9:17:44 PM)

They have the perfect right not to sell material that goes against their doctrine. They don't sell books by Joyce Myers, T.D. Jakes, Joel Osteen, ...

Would one expect a Roman Catholic bookstore to sell books by Martin Luther?

Concerto -> RE: Life Way Christian Stores Pull Gospel Today Magazine (9/27/2008 1:29:22 PM)

Very interesting. If the leaders at Lifeway are committed to selling quality products, why are they selling other books that are not in accordance with the Bible? The Shack..which contains elements best described as blasphemous, is sold at LW.

You mean like getting a Hindu to eat a cow... or torturing an Islamic Terrorist by duck taping a set of headphones and attaching an IPod playing "the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir?

I am just trying to get the crux here!

Hmmm..interesting. Did not know Lifeway books stores was SBC own, well they close the store near by my home at least 5 years ago anyways. Still, why they did not came out long ago with a solution, to keep any magazine they do not publish, outside their stores, like in those boxes you find home and apartaments comunities for rent and etc?

I do think they are still a business, as denominational store also, they must apologize but at same time make provisions reggarding different doctrines material and stuff in consistent manner.

More interesting of all is that Denominations doctrines do vary between countries, conventions and congregations..as I do come from traditional AG, Brazilian style I do embrace the same doctrinal standings as SBC does, reggarding women pastors. I do congregate in traditional Church of God, for now...[:D]

Hello Brother,

Lord have mercy, we must proclaim the Lord and His word.

The AG in Brazil are huge missionary proclaiming church and known for that and started humble places and kept proclaiming and I myself was born again in a Brazilian missionary church in Boston. Our proclaiming ladies may be called Missionaries, Evangelists in the traditional AG churches, still everybody in church are encouraged to be Evangelists and go proclaiming to reach out than you bring to 4 walls of the church and go out again etc .

In my language there is clear difference between to proclaim and to lead, guide and be head.

I do follow the order of Christ, man, woman.

Are you wondering still Loyal Gipsy?

1 Cor 14:33 - 36 (HCSB) 33since God is not a God of disorder but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,£ 34the women£ should be silent in the churches,£ for they are not permitted to speak, but should be submissive, as the law also says. 35And if they want to learn something, they should ask their own husbands£ at home, for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church meeting. 36Did the word of God originate from you, or did it come to you only?

1 Tim 2:11 - 15 (HCSB) 11A woman should learn in silence with full submission.£ 12I do not allow a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; instead, she is to be silent. 13For Adam was created first, then Eve.£ 14And Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and transgressed.£ 15But she will be saved through childbearing, if she continues£ in faith, love, and holiness,£ with good sense.

Like maybe a "heresy" section where they put Osteen, Jakes, et. al.

Yeah, that'd win over people too. Hm...
