NEW YORK (Reuters) - As financial workers suffer through tumultuous times on Wall Street, some are turning to an old source of solace: religion.

It's certainly true. The evangelical church I went to when I was an intern living in Manhattan is sending me constant emails about small groups involving wall streeters.

People want to know that God is still in control- even if we're not. Still, New York and Wall Street remain very secular places. Religion is just one of those things you don't talk about at work.

I think its more along the lines of people feeling very, very lost.

I think uncertainty is a major opportunity for most folks. In our normal daily lives, we have very little motivation to rethink our world views. When our lives get shaken up, we're more open to considering alternatives and making changes.

To be sure, there's more than a little bit of "save my rear this time, and I'll change. Really."

But I would also say that for many of us, this represents a major shakeup in our lives. The sort that doesn't come around very often (hopefully.) Times like these represent one of the few periods in a person's life when he is really capable of examining himself and making changes.

Call me a hard behind or what ever, but I seriously doubt these wallstreets are turning to God for any other reason than for Him to bail them out. We are talking about people here who are more concerned with turning the next dollar than the millions they scammed people out of. They are only sorry because their bubble busted.

Maybe they have hit a new low, maybe they are examining, but I have my doubts that it is true conversion time. Wall streeters are running scared, they might just become like common folk! They might lose their jobs, they might lose their pensions, they might have to give up that big house and do with out those huge salaries and bonuses.

I find very little humaness in a group of people who can rape Americans for profit and only be regretful when they got caught.

I don't think this describes many wall streeters. (Sometime do a search and see if you can figure out what I do for a living [:D]....)

No offense to you personally Group W. In my very biased analysis, I do include the Congressmen, the Pres, the SEC, The Fed, any and all investors who manipulate and dominate the markets.

Many saw this coming years ago and DID NOTHING because it was such a money generator. Now they are crying and scared and we are to pity their circumstances! And believe that they truly want what Christ has to offer?

Sorry, but all in the world glitters as gold and eternity doesn't seem to have much appeal to them.

LOL - no problem. I never take offense. Every once in a while, though, it's fun to confess to being one of those wall street types that created this mess.

I'm hoping alot of people truly turn to God.

since the Word says all nations, etc will be there, I assume that includes Rich people. [8D]

We all have a natural tendency to drop on our knees and ask God to help us when we were in trouble. I know I have and you know what He has getten me out of jams even when I was'nt sincere.

When I used to drink, I used to SWEARRRRR if He just let me get past this hangover I would never drink again.

I would'nt remember the promise till halfway thru the next bottle. [&:]

My daughter works for WELLS FARGO in the investment part. She has been praying alot lately also. For herself and her clients.

AS much as I love to rail at people about money, you realize they are souls that are lost too.

They could find worse places to run to!

well I think I would say that

#1 it's hard for rich people to realize they need God because they "have it all".

#2 (as a generalization) Those who are rich will serve the "god of convinience" What ever god willput the money back in their pocketbook is the one that they are going for.

we need to pray for them, but when God answers our prayer we we might not like the answers.

I was going to take it in the direction that when God answers our prayers THEY might not like the answers! I agree it's tough for rich folk to admit their dependency on God. Barring something traumatic, I think it's tough to get an independently minded person to focus on spiritual things. Crises like the current one, however, I think serve to open the mind sometimes.

For at least a few.
