Yep, now everyone can follow along as numbers 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24... get born.

Zhi -> RE: Duggars getting reality show (9/22/2008 10:33:33 AM)

I think it's a great opportunity for them to witness to the nation, though, don't you?

I mean, I would probably not want cameras following me around, but I've watched the other shows about the Duggars, and I loved how they slip references to their faith in every chance they get.

stellaluna -> RE: Duggars getting reality show (9/22/2008 10:44:22 AM)

Most everyone I know who has seen them thinks of them as bizarre and weird--not something to be emulated.

I'm not sure how their faith will play out on the small screen when people already tend to think they're kind of "out there."

Yep

Leslie_JnJs_mom -> RE: Duggars getting reality show (9/22/2008 10:57:35 AM)

I have seen a couple of threads on different parenting sites about them. No one seems to mind the number of kids they have but they think how the children themselves behave is creepy. One mother of 7 said how she could not watch them because it makes her feel like a terrible mom becuase her kids do not walk around with this I am so happy attitude all the time.
I have to say that they are very brave to put themselves out in public like that.

MrsTracy72 -> RE: Duggars getting reality show (9/22/2008 11:08:01 AM)

Well, they have to have their problems. I mean no matter how well you raise your kids, they are going to go through puberty and all of the things that go with growing up. The biggest difference with them, is that they don't really seem to have much of an outside influence since they do everything as a family and pretty much spend their time in school or working on their current project like the house they built. I mean just grocery shopping is like a day trip and then meal prep is just the same. I don't think they are out there, but I couldn't live like that.

Zhi -> RE: Duggars getting reality show (9/22/2008 11:22:16 AM)

Well, from what I understand, the world is SUPPOSED to see Christians as kind of bizarre... but then realize we have something they're missing. *shrug*

While there's no way that I could ever handle that many kids, I hope that non-Christians see me as a little bizarre too. ;)

stellaluna -> RE: Duggars getting reality show (9/22/2008 11:36:13 AM)

The weirdness doesn't have much to do with what they believe; it has to do with the fact that they don't stop having babies, they all dress alike, they don't go to school, etc.

The Christian thing is an afterthought, but I'm sure won't take anything away from the "weirdness."

I personally think getting the Duggars was a coup for whatever network that is...you can't get a bigger, stranger family than that. They've already had half a dozen, eight...

stateofgrace -> RE: Duggars getting reality show (9/22/2008 11:36:23 AM)

I have mixed feelings about that. For one thing, homeschoolers have all too often been stereotyped - and the Duggars LIVE that stereotype!

On the other hand, perhaps being in an ongoing media spotlight will ensure greater scrutiny of what they believe and their connection to Bill Gothard (up till now this has been largely swept under the rug - such as when they went to the annual ATI event and it was called "a homeschooling conference" on the show).

stellaluna -> RE: Duggars getting reality show (9/22/2008 11:37:59 AM)

What's ATI?

We are not supposed to be seen as bizarre, but we are set apart. People should see things in us that they want. They shouldn't see us as weird and then later on say "Oh, so that weirdo has something that I want" I don't think it works that way.

I don't see that family as bizarre, I just see them as very sheltered. I am willing to bet that when their son gets married, that family is going to be just as involved in their immediate families as they are now that they are living with them. I know they do some sort of outreach thing. At least I think it was them, but other than that, they pretty much stick to themselves from what they have portrayed on shows that they have been on.

But I do have to give that mom credit because she is very well organized and that buddy system she has for the kids has to help alot. I just wonder what all of these pregnancies are doing to her body. I know that they do take their toll.

ATI = Advanced Training Institute = Gothard's home schooling program. If you do a search on the archives here you should be able to find links to the application which is very, um, educational in and of itself.

doinkdom -> RE: Duggars getting reality show (9/22/2008 11:49:14 AM)

Wow! What does Jim Bob do for a living...I just went through a virtual tour of their home and it's very, very nice with plenty of room, etc.

I think homeschooling is fine academically. I take no issue with it at all. Homeschooling for the sole purpose of sequestering children from the world and keeping them cocooned from "life" has serious drawbacks, imo simply because we are called to go "out" to proclaim Christ, etc. not stay at home all warm and fuzzy with our protected Chrisitanity.

All that to say the homeschooling hopefully is not an issue for them, it probably saves tons on gas having to take the kids to 3 or 4 different schools, etc. Homeschooling is an easy target...but I know many homeschoolers are NOT Christian.

I think my only real concern is the family having active participation in their community or have they become their own commune of sorts. Seriously, how do they keep all those children that clean and pressed? [sm=aside.gif]

Maybe that reality show will tell. [;)]

MrsTracy72 -> RE: Duggars getting reality show (9/22/2008 11:53:22 AM)

They built that house themselves.

doinkdom -> RE: Duggars getting reality show (9/22/2008 12:02:27 PM)

It's a pretty nice house by any standard for sure.

Not entirely true. They tried to build it themselves and they did do a lot of it on their own, but they were running severely short on time, so a lot of people were brought in to finish the house quickly and furnish it. I believe a lot of their appliances and stuff were provided to them.

I can certainly see the occasional special or documentary, but a regular reality show would be way to much for me.

Consecrated2God -> RE: Duggars getting reality show (9/22/2008 12:25:37 PM)

I hadn't heard about a reality show. Is there a link about it?

Well, some kids are raised to have better attitudes than others. I personally wouldn't want everyone to see the ways mine act all the time, but I know my kids are angels compared to some kids I've met. [8D] I do think some families might actually have kids that have great attitudes.

kohls356 -> RE: Duggars getting reality show (9/22/2008 12:27:25 PM)

I wonder how real this reality show will be. Are they going to show the good, the bad, and the ugly or just the nice dressed up clean kids they always show.

I watch Jon and Kate plus 8 and one of the things that Kate has said is she wants people to see how things really are, the good and bad moments. All I have ever seen with any of the shows about the Duggars is the super sweetness that could give us all cavities. I often wonder if Michelle Duggar ever raises her voice or is everything just so precious for her.

I guess that would depend on who was editing and what they want to potray.

Is there more to that article? The only part I could see was very short and didn't tell me much.

Oh sure, a lot of us could (hopefully) say that, but I'd be mighty suspicous of kids who have great attitudes all the time. That would be a little unreal. Even the best of couples have moments when they're a little be tiffed at each other. Would they show Michelle and JimBob getting snippy with each other? I doubt it, but we'll see.

I think the show is supposed to start October 1st.

Consecrated2God -> RE: Duggars getting reality show (9/22/2008 12:42:04 PM)

I've always wondered if the presence of cameras might make a family act differently, though. I know if I had a camera pointed at me I wouldn't be getting into a tiff with my husband. We don't even argue in front of the kids. We take it to his office, usually. I wonder how long you'd have to have the cameras around to feel completely comfortable and natural just being yourselves.

stateofgrace -> RE: Duggars getting reality show (9/22/2008 1:07:23 PM)

I suspect that Jim Bob Duggar is an experienced enough businessman that he has made sure that the family will not be portrayed in a negative light. OTHO, I think other families like Jon&Kate and the Little People folks, they don't mind some of their faults being portrayed.

3cappuccinosmom -> RE: Duggars getting reality show (9/22/2008 1:14:14 PM)

I think they're brave, given the number of people who despise them and look for any reason to tear them apart.

I wonder if the reality show will actually give a more "real" impression of their family, as opposed to the specials which have to be heavily edited just by their nature.
