In the late 70s I actually got to see Joe Pass, and he came with Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald and Ray Brown. Awesome show.
I'll have to look up Grant Geismann. This guy I'm thinking of also toured with Tom Scott sometimes. I saw him at a Tom Scott show as well. Awesome guitarists and he was a studio musician on several fusion albums from the 70s. Deadgum I can't think of that guy's name.

Bill,
Grant Geissman is definitely awesome. I didn't realize he was the one who did the guitar solo on Feels So Good. I'm getting him confused with another guitarist -- Steve Khan. Khan is the one I saw with Tom Scott, and yes, it was Geissman who was with Mangione. Both guys would blow people away. They make people like Eddie Van Halen almost look like a novice.

Yes, too bad they were pigeon-holed as a teen idol group. 
I always thought the Duran Duran boys played good. I liked the bass playing of John Taylor. He was my favorite pop group bass players at that time. I liked their first two and then they slipped IMO on their subsequent albums. The songs sounded the same and not fresh anymore. I did see some good work on "Big Thing" in '88.

Yeah, I haven't gotten too much into Alter Bridge, but the stuff he did with Creed was outstanding.

A few years back the trend in music was having that retro sound. Bands such as The Strokes, The Vines, Jet and some others came on the scene. There was some really solid guitar work from those bands. Jet was probably my favorite among them.

Are we talking about all types of music or are we just talking those "unsung" great solos from Pop Music? I thought we were just talking the Pop Music.
My Best Friends Girlfriend - The Cars (Elliot Easton is probably one of those most overlooked guitar players because he was in a pop band. All the stuff he played was just tasty, ripping, and he never took away from the song to showcase himself.)
I'm a huge Cheap Trick fan so I probably couldn't pick one song. Rick Nielsen - Another awesome player.

Typically, by "Pop", I mean it actually got radio play.

Rik Emmett of Triumph (the other Canadian Band besides BTO and Rush) had some great solos on "Fight the Good Fight" and "Magic Power" which got a lot of radio play. I guess they dropped off my radar after their "Never Surrender" album. He also had good guitar work on "Hold On". Going to Napster to go down memory lane with Triumph.

Nobody mention "Hotel California" yet? Was never a big Eagles fan but was always amazed at that solo though it's sort of a duet in essence.
btw if anyone does a keyboard solo thread I want to pre-submit Kieth Emerson's "Lucky Man" and Rick Wakeman's "Roundabout". lol

This song is entirely too long for me. Perhaps if I could isolate the guitar solo I might enjoy it.

Lucky Man, totally awesome Moog solo. Roundabout is probably one of my favorite yes songs. They really showcased the keys.

How could we forget Hotel California! Thanks for reminding us of this great song and solo!
I saw a concert movie of an ELP concert and I remember Emerson playing a wood framed electric organ and spinning it on one corner during a keyboard solo. Pretty wild! I still like Brain Salad Surgery! Karn Evil 9 is still a rock classic!

That's a pretty cool sound for a guitar. I figured it was a synthesizer of some sort. I couldn't stand the white stripes at first, that all changed after seven nation army. Such a simple song but it just rocks!

I would stick with songs that got airplay. A lot of us may not know deep cuts at all. Exceptions are if a song made it on a greatest hits or something instead.

The Police - Driven to Tears. Andy Summers never really did "solos" and when he did he kept them short and very interesting. This is one of my favorites of his. Nothing complicated, but it just was right.
