Who thinks Depp (as Riddler) and Hoffman (as Penguin) can top Ledger's Joker?

Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin is much more exciting.

Nah. I'm not so impressed. They should have picked a completely new villain other than the Riddler because Jim Carrey's version cannot be topped, I believe. As for the Penguin...that can also be debatable. Danny DeVito did a very good job in Batman Returns.

When I first read this, I thought you were talking about Dustin Hoffman. That would certainly be an odd choice. Phillip Seymour Hoffman should be really cool. Johnny Depp... eh... maybe...

I think Jim carrey riddler vs Johnny depps riddler is going to be like Jack Nicholsons vs Heath Ledgers Jokers were. I do not think the riddler is going to tell goofy riddles or have silly looking bombs I think it is going to be a very dark sinister evil criminal. Oh boy oh boy oh boy I cant wait!!!!!

Carey vs. Depp and Devito vs. Hoffman is just as radical as Nicholson vs. Ledger was.

They can hardly be called the same characters, aside from name.

I read on a super hero movie email list that Angelina Jolie is going to play cat woman. I saw a website that said she was not this last summer but they also said Johnny Depp was not going to play the riddler either. So now they are confirming that Johnny depp is the riddler so I bet the renewed talk of Angelina Jolie as catwoman is true too.

Finally! Depp playing a character creepy enough to fit his real-life persona.

Seriously, has anyone seen the updated "Willy Wonka?" He did not know how to straddle that line between quirkily eccentric and oogie-woogie creepy. Way harsh on the creepy side.

Not that I have an opinion on this matter...[8|]

I'll believe it when I see it. I mean, I'm psyched, but I'm not convinced. It's too far off to move in my mind from "rumor" to "this'll be amazing."
Though, much to my immense and terrible shame, I've never had the pleasure of seeing Philip Seymour Hoffman in anything - though I did see a movie he received a special thanks for...

I think Carrey and DeVito's Riddler and Penguin, respectively, were great, but that the more sinister feel/tone to this Batman series would make for a different type of Riddler....Remember how Ledger topped Nicholson's Joker? No one thought he could, but it was the different slant he took to it. ...The Christopher Nolan Batman series has been more dark and sinister and mature, so maybe we'll see a very evil and highly intelligent and serious Riddler with Depp...

It would be a different slant and appropriate to Nolan's Gotham City. ....Would it be better? Maybe, maybe not. I think picking the same villain is always tricky....always tough to reinvent the wheel, but just gotta remember this is a highly different series and Depp has had a good history of playing interesting, non-mainstream characters. I hope for the franchise's sake he doesn't mess it up! lol.....It's already hard enough to follow up Ledger's Joker, but to completely miss the mark on Riddler would be devasting for fans and the franchise.

I wonder, though,...would a highly intelligent, sinister, and serious Riddler be like Jig Saw from the Saw series? ....Then again, the Riddler poses as a good guy in teh comics, so I guess not really. ....I"m just trying to picture how the Riddler might be.

Not confirmed. Thiw was reported on a while back and it was taken as Michael just being on top of internet rumors and this was more of a joke. I'll wait till its confirmed by someone like.. the director or someone involved with the casting process.

As for Hoffman.. the only thing I saw him in was Twister. I was not impressed :P He was the most annoying character in that movie. Well... one of them. I was thinking when I first saw it, where theres someone who wont be around in the future. Boy was I wrong :P

The link says nothing definite about casting decisions. I'll believe the Depp-Riddler rumors when I hear it from the Nolan Brothers.

Until then, I'll stand by.

He's really quite good. Capote is worth seeing. I can definitely see him being very creepy.
