Aren't you a little skeptical when you see that a politician is trying just a little TOO hard to convince? I am. And, the latest move by Obama's camp seems to me to be nothing more than propaganda of the most cynical sort. Apparently, according to CNN, Obama is rolling out new merchandise to tout their support among Christians. Can you imagine a "Believers for Palin" button? Or a "Pro Israel - Pro Palin" button? The media would be ridiculing it up one side and down the other. But, that is exactly what Obama's camp is up to with their new Believer's for Barack buttons, signs and bumper stickers. See for yourself if this doesn't smack of deception (anyone can wear one or put on a bumper sticker) to make it look like he's got support where he does not. Obama's 'Faith Merchandise' You can bet that a lot of UNBELIEVERS in Christ will suddenly be looking very faithful as they rush to show their faith in Obama with the new gear!

TMeeks, I have been following your posts pretty much lately. I take it that you are not a big fan of Obama, or who some of us have called "he who walks on water" here in the Chicago area.

From what I understand, a lot of unbelievers hold their nose at Obama's faith while voting for him anyways. There's plenty of generic political junk to go around for unbelievers to wear or stick on their cars.

It's not a grammatical error. It's a contraction of "is". There's only one of them... *mischeivous grin*

See for yourself if this doesn't smack of deception (anyone can wear one or put on a bumper sticker) to make it look like he's got support where he does not. Obama's 'Faith Merchandise' So THAT'S what was in those bags: I was sitting in our Truck on Office Depot's parking lot the other day, while d/h went in to buy a couple ink cartridges for our printer, and there was a black woman in a car who was stopping all black/brown people and asking them if they wanted an Obama button and those that said yes was also handed a packets (plastic bag containing material) of whatever (must have been Obama's 'Faith Merchandise') to them. There were at least '6' of other different nationalities, including whites, that passed by her car but she stopped not one of them. On a different note: Some of you are probably aware, aggressive atheist Bill Maher is releasing a new film called Religulous which is being touted as a "documentary" that "debunks faith." Many so-called prestigious organizations and festivals are already lining up to give the film awards and praise. It's being directed by the individual who directed Borat which was one of the most gross and obscene (and frankly, unfunny) comedies in cinematic history. The film allegedly takes vignettes from various faith traditions and weaves them into a narrative that makes people of faith appear to be irrational, odd, and even dangerous. Maher's acidic commentary is provided throughout. This film will coincide with a new media onslaught in the USA against evangelical Christianity and the "dangers of theocons" taking over the government. There is a "perfect storm" brewing right now between the entertainment industry, religious controversy, and the fall pollitical campaign. We should be prepared in prayer and equipped with knowledge and wisdom for this coming storm.

It amazes me that Barak continues to do things with little criticism that if done by a Republican would bring down the wrath of the media and and the left. If a conservative did such a thing he would be accused of destroying the separation of church and state, or unfairly bringin religion into the political arena; Barak does it, and it's a shrewd political move.

I think a "believers for Barak" button would be like the "Democrats for McCain" sign I saw yesterday - it's effective because it's contradictory.

ORIGINAL: leonfigg3 TMeeks, I have been following your posts pretty much lately. I take it that you are not a big fan of Obama, or who some of us have called "he who walks on water" here in the Chicago area. I have never seen so many red flags hanging on a candidate for president. From his associations to his willingness to scare the American people into voting for him, he keeps giving us clues as to his real persona and it isn't pretty. In cleaning out my parent's home, I found a magazine from 1917 that describes the overthrow of the Czar in Russia in glowing terms. The Czar was thought to be alive at the time of the writing. It speaks of how the leaders of the revolt will bring about wonderful democracy to the Russian people. But, we know, in hindsight, that the reality was far different. The people rose up because charismatic leaders had convinced them that the economy in Russia was doomed and that they could bring about a new vitality in the freedom that they promised. The people bought it, hook, line and sinker. I know that people hate historical parallels that include Hitler. But, they cannot be ignored. If Hitler had not been able to convince a large number of German's that he and he alone could save their economy and had Mussolini not been able to convince the Italians that he and he alone was able to restore their economy, then neither would have been able to come to power and eventually destroy their respective countries. The fact is that the most dangerous of leaders almost always come to power by having a vested interest in the failure of their country's economy and they know that bad-mouthing the economy becomes self-fulfilling, moving the people toward them. History isn't comforting when it comes to politicians out of power talking down their country's economy rather than pointing to strengths.

When someone is trying TOO hard to convince people - that means they are losing and are desperate.

History isn't comforting when it comes to politicians out of power talking down their country's economy rather than pointing to strengths. The most dangerous leaders of history (including the ones you mention) universally share one practice: they insist that criticizing the way things are being run is labeled unpatriotic or subversive. And, they say people doing it have a vested interest in the failure of their country, and are thus enemies. Seems to be the same position you are advocating.

Were you living in the U.S. during the last two elections???? Much of the evangelical commnunity basically turned itself into a get-out-the-vote army for the republican party. Sure, the Democrats are tying to 'reach out' to Christian communities. And, I'm sure its at least partly self-serving. But, its certainly no more self-serving than the Republican's efforts. Yeah, I need to watch-out for Democrats who will appropriate Christian language and hot-button issues to manipulate me and get me to ignore some unethical positions and behavior. I'd advise conservative Christian brothers to start paying attention to the same thing.

Their is quite a difference between the fact that certain political positions are attractive to believers (as some inevitably will be) and a campaign directly co-opting religous denominations for marketing purposes in a manner that makes it seem as if those groups are actually endorsing the candidate. At the very least it is the height of hypocrisy, and the most it is a dangerous intrusion by the state into religious matters.

I am glad Obama is reaching out to us, and this isn't the first time he's tried. He said a few months ago that he would extend Bush's government support for faith-based programs. And so what if nonbelievers are voting for Obama? Do you think nonbelievers never vote Republican? What I'm sick of is politicians treating Christians like sheep and lying to us.

We are talking about Obama bumper stickers (from the Obama campaign) that say 'Believers for Obama' and 'Catholics for Obama' - pandering at it's utmost.

There are all kinds of stickers and buttons like that—soccer moms for Obama, rock stars for Obama, teachers for Obama, etc. And you can find the exact same kind of bumper stickers for McCain. http://www.zazzle.com/christians_for_mccain_palin_bumper_stickers_bumpersticker-128044274066384640 I don't care if a Christian wants to show their support for a candidate with a bumper sticker and donate some money to their campaign in the process. How is that pandering? If you want to talk about pandering, why don't we talk about how McCain chose Palin just to pander to Christians? He doesn't seem to agree with her on anything (earmarks, experience, foreign policy), and then his entire campaign just switches course as soon as she's nominated. Why? So people like us would come out in droves and vote Republican just because the VP is pro-life (even though she talked about "making a choice") ... nevermind the fact that Palin and McCain keep on lying to us over and over again!

You do realize the difference between what a campaign puts out and what a third party puts out? The company you linked to sells both Obama and McCain stickers, some of which (on the actual page you linked to) are highly offensive. Obama is directly conflating his campaign and religious organizations; that is direct attempt to pander to said groups, and your willingness to ignore this (As well as Obama's lies) simply shows you aren't the least bit objective on the issue.
