True. The window would also not work well in that situation, lol. I was picturing our old church/school in my head, and though the classrooms are on the second floor, the ground is at that level in the back of the building. I would really have no qualms in sending kids through the window to their moms and dads, lol.

This classroom is in the middle of the school building so there are no windows. The closest exit is to the playground in the back but not convenient access to the parents in the driveway for their kids. There are 2 hallways perpendicular to the parking lot and 2 parallel kind of making the elementary wing like a big square and this classroom is one of the ones on the inside, not along the outer walls.

I bring the kids down about 10-15 minutes before their scheduled pick up time to wait (so at 4:15 and 5:15) 4. ANy child who is K or younger must be with someone older than 18: me as my helper is in high school. I generallly have at least 12 kids a day...today there were 24 at one point. Ok where do you bring the children too? Every daycare experience I have had, parents have had to come to the room, get buzzed in and get their child then get their coats and all of their things ready themselves. The teachers wouldn't do it. And as a provider in my home, I only get the kids ready a few minutes before their scheduled pickup time if I had a rough day and want them gone. But I would ask that the parents come to the room to get the kids and they be responsible for their own children's things.

This is a program run by the school at the school. I pick the kids up from the classroom where kids that aren't on busses are dismissed from and walk them down to the room we use. When they go, the parents wait at the doors by the office and I bring them down to the elementary office where the parents are waiting.

That just seems silly...having YOU run around instead of the parents coming to you. There's got to be a way around that.

I think the issues are that 1. They don't want to leave the doors unlocked so that anyone can get in. 2. There's not a way right now to let them in from where I am. 3. The program has grown 2-4X since last year. Last year a typical day started with 4-6 kids plus my own if they were there. This year typical is 12-15 kids to start with. I spoke with the principal and we have a couple of these wheeled carts and she said we can put all the little kids' stuff in it in the elementary lobby so they don't have to go back and forth just to get their bags. I also spoke with the Early Ed director and she said we can maybe look at hiring another person so we have 2 adults so that one can stay with the extra kids. ETA: At one point today the Early Ed director came to get her kids and she stayed with the little ones while I took one little girl down. Actually, now that I think back I had her just stay with the bigger ones because my helper had to leave early. i could have left all of them with her. Oh well.

That is how all daycare and after school centers around here have done it for years. I just don't understand why they don't see that.

I'm looking at this from another standpoint--is it really legal for you to be the only one responsible for that many children? In my state, the maximum adult teacher/child ratio is 10, and that's for all school aged children. Also, are you the only person in the school when this is going on? If so, I'd be really afraid of being the only adult there--what if a child was injured? How could you transport it to emergency care? How would you let emergency workers into the building? At the very least, there should be someone (adult) other than you present in the building at all times where you can get assistance if needed. Maybe there should be someone who stays in the office and lets parents in through the front door, the parents go up to the classroom to get the child and "stuff", then the person at the front door checks the parents and child out (verifies that the adult is the parent or authorized representative of the child).

I've already explained that we are in compliance with staff to child ratios. Yes, there are other people around the building somewhere.

Child to staff ratios vary by state so where you may only be able to have ten, she may be able to have more. And it depends on the type of school it is. There is a difference between public and private, and if it is a daycare or an after care and how many hours kids are in there. I still don't understand why the parents can't come to the room to get the kids. If I were you, I would be very unhappy, but at the same time, like you, I would still do it because that is just the way I am.

This is after care at a private school. I think the school does not want the parents just being able to come in and have access to the whole school after hours when there's not as much staff there. In fact, some of the parents have asked about the security of where we are and whether people can get ito where we are. The workers over 18 have security clearances. The parents picking up kids do not necessariliy have that. I don't think this is really an alternative and don't necessarily think it should be. As I've stated we may be doing some more hiring. I am hopefully going to have a meeting with the principal tomorrow afternoon.

That is just weird. Are you way in the back of the building or something like that? I know that things are soooo different in private schools. In my old school, the daycare center was attached and you could get in through the outside where you had to be buzzed in, or you could walk right into the school and through a couple of doors and there you go. Right into the daycare center that is supposed to be locked. We always had issues with that because the school had open access all day and many parents asked that we use the security system we already had in place but we were told that God will take care of us. I do trust that he will, but I also trust that he had them install that security system for a reason and it was a waste to use it.

If there are others in the building, then have a buzzer installed on the door, have the parents escorted to the room by someone in the building to get the child, if they don't want them free to wander around. It is insane to have you drag the whole class of kids to the door every time a parent shows up. And frankly, as a parent, I am FAR more uncomfortable with all the kids trooping to the door then back to the room every time a parent showed up, then with the parents being let into the school to come get their child from the classroom. What happens if one of the kids decides it's "fun" to slip out the door in the confusion of getting child and "stuff" to the parent? The daycare my son attended had many classrooms that were far back (even other buildings, accessible only through the main building). The parents all had keycards to open the doors. Only parents were given the cards so only parents could pick up the children without going through the office. The keycards were coded so that there was an electronic record of which keycard opened the door at any given time...also if a child was withdrawn and the keycard not returned or a keycard was stolen, that card could be blocked from opening the door.

I think investing in a buzzer to let the parents i is the best alternative. Ask the parents to support u (with a petition maybe) to allow the principal some insight to the matter

They can't because the doors are locked, Zoebob's room is nowhere near the doors, and the school can't leave the doors open or anyone off the street could walk in. Creationtalk, the other people in the building are not part of the after-school program. They aren't being paid to escort Zoebob's afterschool kids.

Right, it's people like the maintinance (sp?) man, teachers working late in their rooms, sports teams, etc. The little ones can't slip out while I am getting kids to parents. we walk together. I take head counts at each turn. The doors are too heavy for the little ones to open on their own. There are double doors in the lobby that they sit between. ALso, I generally see the parents and let the child go out to the car so I don't actually leave the building with them unless there's a need to talk to the parent. It is about 10 feet from the door to the car and no one else is driving in that part because it is only other extended care parents.

YEs, we seem to have a solution that is working. We have these 2 wheeled carts and we take all their bags down to the lobby so they are there ready to go when the parents come. 1-2 of the bigger kids get to wheel them down when they are done with their homework and all the bags are stored. it is a big help. Just not having to stop in the room if we are outside when a parent comes is a big help. Also, i"ve started using the big jump rope for the PK4-K kids to hold on to when we walk the halls so they stay together.

Surely they can afford a rope! LOL--with the loops knotted in for each child to hold, KWIM?

Well, no one uses the jump rope to jump with anyway. They actually probably can't afford the rope anyway. The amount we bill a week doesn't cover the pay of myself and the workers. ETA: It might cover our salaries but not much more. I am not sure if the program is self sustaining or not yet
