I'm into Human Services. I wanted to be a social worker for a few years now, but as I sat down and thought about it, I don't think I would enjoy being one.

So, two weeks ago, I finally made a conclusion and I am happy that I did, because I would love doing this. I want to be a teacher's assistant for the special needs. I don't think I would like being a Teacher, but I know I would love being a teacher's assistant.

As for the special needs, I've had a heart for them since the age of 6. I had a heart for them, as for the elderly.

So how many of you changed your major?

I "tweaked" my major. I originally wanted my masters in social work. Since I volunteer with abused kids, I knew that was my passion and the field I wanted to work in. But as I got more into classes, I realized so much of a social worker's job is dealing with all the other areas...parents, schools, foster parents, etc, and what I really wanted was to work one on one with kids. Plus, there was no guarantee that I'd even get hired to work with kids...I could be placed into other areas of social work, and I don't care to do that.

So, a few years back while I was still getting my GE done, I shifted my major to psychology...since I hadn't really declared a major at that point, I didn't really have to make any changes. I graduate in May and will be going into a graduate program for counseling next fall. I'll eventually get my MFT license and am taking additional classes pertaining just to kids.

I've almost have my undergraduate degree in Business Administraction and will have it in March 09. However, I have switched my major in the Masters Program, which I will start in April 09. I thought I would just go into business, like my undergraduate degree, but I've decided that I want to go into Communications and writing for my masters. I believe that this is the correct way for me to go.

I started out as a math major, but switched to Spanish when my husband and I decided to go into missions. Then he went to seminary, so I've been out of college for 7 years with a degree in Spanish and nothing to use it on other than teaching ([:'(]) There are a billion native Spanish-speakers around here with a degree in something else on top of their bi-lingual abilities, so I'm not too marketable.

My husband started as a music major, switched to computer science, and ended with a BA in speech communication. He just got his ThM (Masters of Theology) and is currently looking for a job in ministry.

I did! While I was an undergraduate I was a General Studies major, then a Music major, then finally a Speech Communications major. I didn't write any speeches, but ended up becoming a writer and working in the technical field for about 12 years. During that time, I was pursuing a second bachelor's degree (which I decided not to get). I started out as a psychology major, then after a heartbreaking internship, I became a computer studies major. Then I was introduced to Java and databases - was bored to death ... and realized that it was not the field for me. (But it opened the door for me to do web design and development).

Now, I'm a Digital Media major in graduate school. My next and final degree (God willing) will be a Creative Writing (MFA or PhD) or possibly Journalism (documentary news).

There is nothing wrong with switching. It is better to switch and learn something that you like and are called to do than to do something that you don't like just because you want to stay the course. I did it and it didn't result in me wasting any time - and opened up doors for me (even the psychology and computer studies majors). Plus a very high percentage of people (I think over 50%) of people don't work in their undergraduate major's field - so you aren't locked in. And lots of people change fields when they go from undergraduate to grad school.

I've changed majors more than once, though all in the same general fields:
started UG in aerospace engineering, switched to engineering physics, switched to physics
started grad in math, got first degree, did research and took classes in physical chemistry, switched to astrophysics, switched to physics...

I started out pre-med, and then toyed with a music major before I settled on business administration. I only got a history major as well because I liked history and I needed to learn to write better. Should have gotten an economics degree instead of a bba. My minor is in economics, and it's still my favorite subject.

I switched majors a couple of times. I started out undecided, then decided on History. I couldn't figure out what I could do with a BA is History, so I changed to Elementary Education. I soon realized the little bitty ones aren't for me. Then, I finally switched to Middle School Education with an emphasis in...History/Social Studies! It only took me 6 1/2 years to finish my BS[8|], but I'm very happy with my final decision. I love the middle schoolers that I work with now.[:D]

Eight times: music, history, comparative literature, art history, anthropology, philosophy, economics, classical studies.

I didn't switch my major. I was mathematics with teacher certification (grades 9-12) throughout my schooling. BUT I don't use the degree at all, and my teacher license expired years ago. [8|]

I should have switched majors.

Haha! this is a great one!
Well, I went from theology/seminary, then to music education, switched to ethnomusicology (similar to music history)- the I left music altogether and went to comparative studies, scratched that and went to religious studies (seems like a circle...huh)...this is where it gets interesting

I am now a communication's major with a concentration in media broadcasting. Now that seems crazy to me, because if you knew me, you'd know I wasn't that well of a communicator, sort of like a 'Moses' looking for an 'Aaron'..lol...but through much prayer for guidance and direction this summer, God has confirmed to me that He uses the unthinkable to bring Him glory!
So communications it is!

btw...all of these changes have happened in the span of 2 years...crazy?! I know right?...lol

Beachcooky: I did some social work and special ed. You don't get paid much as a spec ed assist. think about occupational, physical or recreation therapy with spec people. there's music or art therapy. or get some specialty in spec ed teaching if you don't like being in charge of a class.

I started as a physics major, but discovered the unlimited cut system and boys so switched to philosophy and then sociology bc it took a lot less work. I'm not sorry. I had a good time in school and enjoyed working w people.

I switched from Computer Programming to Accounting. That has been a great move for a lot of reasons.

Programmers were flooded in the market I am in, but then so have accountants. But it has allowed me to understand the why of many of the programs I use, so I can help the companies debug their software faster for my company.

Nope--I want to be a special ed teacher's assistant. That has been my dream for my whole life and I know we don't get paid that much. But I would rather enjoy my career choice then doing something I don't like.

When I started in college 13 years ago I was an engineering major. Then I took a very long hiatus to figure out what I really wanted to do. Now I'm an education major (secondary mathematics).

I switched my minor. I started out with a major in History and minor in Geography, but then switched the minor to political science when I realized I didn't want to teach high school anymore.

When I did my graduate degree I switched my focus to Corporate Communications, thinking I was going to get into government but instead decided to get into non-profit.

My husband switched majors from Aerospace Engineering to Economics.

I loved college so much I didn't want to leave. It's embarrassing how many hours I had when I graduated. I remember my dad saying, "Either go to graduate school or get a job." I ended up doing both only to quit Graduate school several hours shy of an MBA. I've lost so many of those hours. [:@] However, the knowledge I gained has helped me with starting and making more than one business a success. Still wish I had the formal degree though.

I started with a major in biology, leaning toward zoology or marine biology. I completed 2 years with that before my imperfect math & chem. scores (Bs and a few Cs) started pulling down my GPA so I was close to losing my scholarship.

So because I couldn't afford to lose my scholarship I switched to secondary education and communications. Easy A stuff for me.

I graduated with the double major in Education and English.

If I could do it again I'd probably finish the biology degree at a public university (and probably get a history one too).

I'm going for my Library and Information Science master's next year.

I never declared my major because I figured that I would keep changing it. I would move back and forth from one to the other, and other to one.

I started out with a biological science degree, then I changed to History when i found out how many lab classes I had to do to graduate with biological science. So my counselor said to change to what I like and I am good at, so I have a degree in History.

If I had it to do over, I would have stuck with the science, as I always wanted to work in the lab at a hospital.

I changed once, hubby changed four times, and we feel we are still not done with school (we'll probably both re-enter with different majors yet again)!

Way back in time, when dinosaurs roamed the planet, Fred Flintstone and I were trying to decide what to do about college. Well he decided it was too much for him but I knew I needed to get a degree.

So for 3 years of high school (there were only 3 back in "the day", 10,11,12) I was certain I was going into some kind of chemistry. So when it came time to choose, I had to pick between Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

I sat there and stared at the enrollment forms for all of 30 seconds and wrote down "Computer Science".

Call it divine intervention.

God chose very well for me and I am glad He did. The interesting thing is I was so hard-headed that he had to do such an intervention. What I should have done was prayed earnestly about what God wanted me to do.

So I never changed my major, I figured God was a lot smarter than me. [8D]

So if you can't figure anything else out, and you receive no clear direction or intevention, go with something you like. After all, you will be doing it a long time. It might as well be something you like doing. [:D]

Well, no, we went our separate ways. I wasn't cut out for real labor. I prefer the office stuff. [8D]

It sounds like you have something figured out though. You want to do that which you like to do. This is excellent.

The only thing else to consider is how much of a sacrifice of other things of life you are willing to make to do what it is you like to do. Because at the end of the day, ya gotta eat. [;)]
