Soxfan -> Is Oprah Biased? Host Won't Interview Palin (9/6/2008 7:24:26 AM)

Oprah won't have Sarah Palin on her show

So much for her support of women. guess it's just LIBERAL women

Is Oprah Biased? Host Won't Interview Palin
Republican VP Nominee Sarah Palin Isn't Welcome on 'Oprah'

"Having Palin on the show would be a conflict of interest," said Elwood Watson, a professor of history and African-American studies at East Tennessee State University and co-author of "The Oprah Phenomenon."

"She's made up her mind, and she's not going to sway from it," said Watson, when asked whether it would be plausible for Winfrey to simultaneously support Obama and interview Palin on her show, which could be interpreted as an endorsement. "How can you endorse two people?"

With almost 1,000 comments on her community message board dedicated to a possible Palin interview, Winfrey is already garnering strong reaction among her fans -- both those who are pleased with her decision and those who are not, such as Grossman-Green.

"I'm actually pretty angry with her right now because of this," she said. "I don't think I will be a gung-ho supporter right now.

"I'd think twice about switching her on or even buying her magazine."

Soxfan - this was based on information contained in the Drudge report. I'm not sure how unbiased that news source is - although I do know that sometimes they have scooped news reports from the mainstream news media. (I was starting to get a little suspicious of the source when I saw that the article that you linked to didn't have any direct quotes from Oprah.)

After a few minutes of googling, I found Oprah's response to this story. She denies that she said anything like this. Here is a link to the news article that quotes her:

Oprah is truly a partisan hack, but nothing you do Joe will hurt her sales or rating unless you can convince millions of brainwashed women.

Since when in Oprah's job to be a poltical forum.
That would be like having Obama on the 700 club or something.

I agree.

Oprah made it clear she supports Obama.

She's not a "news source".

wing2000 -> RE: Is Oprah Biased? Host Won't Interview Palin (9/6/2008 10:10:53 AM)

Poor Palin...Oprah won't have her (as if Oprah has any influence on the political process....you didn't see her at the Democratic convention).

What a bunch of whining....

Meanwhile, the McCain campaign is apparently keeping Palin away from the Sunday talk shows. Sarah is MIA.

What are they afraid of? Can't she handle a tough interview?

Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee for president, will appear on ABC This Week with George Stephanopoulos. Joe Biden, Obama's running mate, will appear on NBC's Meet the Press. John McCain, the Republican nominee for president - isn't it nice to be able to stop saying, presumptive? - will "Face the Nation'' on CBS.

I don't see any reason future VP Palin would need to go on Oprah.

Oprah is an Obama backer, so not really a good idea anyway.

Exactly. The McCain camp probably wants to keep her around friendly audiences for now. However....

I wonder if deep down inside, Oprah is concerned that there's a chance Gov. Palin would "rock the house" on her show and in effect, maybe upstage her man?

Darn right Oprah's afraid of that! Upstage Obama? heck, she don't want to be upstaged herself, she want's to keep her woman guru status. Palin is a threat to her as much as Obama.

Notice I didn't even mention Biden.

Oprah has made me lose some respect for her. But I am still attracted to her show as she is a wonderfully gifted host and it is like crack...whenever I have time and moment, some shows I would enjoy watching.

I predict she'll have Palin on right away should the McCain/Palin win!

She was already quoted as saying that.

"I agree that Sarah Palin would be a fantastic interview, and I would love to have her on after the campaign is over."

ekserekseez -> RE: Is Oprah Biased? Host Won't Interview Palin (9/6/2008 11:45:18 AM)

Well, this is freedom of the press at work (TV is, after all, a type of press). Oprah is biased, of course, just like everyone. She has her own show, and can invite whomever she wants on it. If she doesn't want Palin, then she doesn't have to have Palin.

If you want to interview Sarah Palin, here's how it works: get your own show/website/paper/magazine/blog, and interview her!

Remember that freedom of the press applies to PEOPLE WHO OWN PRINTING PRESSES! This is the great thing about the Internet. It used to be only rich people who could afford publicity. Now anyone can!

Good point about Palin being kept off the Sunday talk shows though. I think McCain's people are afraid she's coming off as too harsh.

That statement was just so funny it had to be posted again....

gaylel1 -> RE: Is Oprah Biased? Host Won't Interview Palin (9/6/2008 2:48:51 PM)

Like everyone says, Oprah can invite anyone she wants on her talk show. She cannot go on Ellen because she's gay and that will not fly with conservative groups, and she cannot go to Obermann's circus so the best place she can go is CNN, or maybe MSNBC or Fox.

tafkam -> RE: Is Oprah Biased? Host Won't Interview Palin (9/6/2008 2:51:11 PM)

If invited, I think she should go on Olberman or whoever else.

I've always poked fun and Democrats who are scared to go on Sean's or Rush's show, so if it begins to look like Palin or McCain is avoiding certain shows out of fear of difficult questions, I'll criticize that move as well.

I've always thought that going on a show with someone that you KNOW disagrees with you would be too much fun...

Interesting article that gives a different slant to the who and why of Oprah. It should be especially interesting to Christians.

The Real Obama is the Obama Oprah Knows

inthysite -> RE: Is Oprah Biased? Host Won't Interview Palin (9/6/2008 3:01:34 PM)

Every one knows I'm not a NObama supporter but I do believe what Oprah says is sincere.

She has publicly announced her support for NObama but has not had him or his wife on her show since doing so.

She has spent a lot of time, sweat, an money developing her brand and her reputation. To turn her show into a political venue would be detrimental to her seeing how she appeals to both sides of the isle.

Everyone has a right to their opinion and to be able to support whomever they choose, but if she were to start turning her show into a political arena she runs the risk of offending Liberals if she hosts a Conservative, or offending a Conservative is she hosts a Liberal. It's a no win situation for her.

(However I believe her comment "I cried my eyelashes off. I was crying before he even got on stage," didn't put her in the best of lights.)

I don't think there is anything wrong with saying that. You cannot diminish this accomplishment. He is the first African-American to make it this far. No matter what you think of him, this is something big. Many African-Americans felt emotional at the moment. I don't see anything wrong with her being emotional.

Anyway back to the original post--I don't really think it matters whether Oprah is biased or whether she has Palin on her show or not--which she said she'd like to do after the election. I think people are forgetting that Oprah is not a journalist or political commentator--that is not what her show is about. That would be like being upset that Obama isn't on Focus on the Family or something like that--these are conservative slanted shows, so it isn't as if they are unbiased either. In America, they have that right.

Everyone's biased in one way or another. If you were a talk show host could you give an unbiased interview of Barak (or the Pope)? Or would you be putting them on the spot and ask some tough questions?

Besides she's a pit bull with lipstick. Why should it bother her!

BTW, she gives pit bulls a bad name!

ekserekseez -> RE: Is Oprah Biased? Host Won't Interview Palin (9/6/2008 11:06:09 PM)

The real question is, why does anyone at all even watch Oprah, much less care whom she interviews? Her show is so boring, it would drive me to drink if I weren't already a functional alcoholic.

I'd much rather see Palin on Ellen. She at least is amusing. And if Palin REALLY wanted to show that she's not afraid of ANYTHING, she'd go on either Jon Stewart or Steven Colbert. Or host SNL.

Remember Clinton playing his sax? It got him 8 years of prime DC real estate and unlimited intern hookups. Cool sells in America these days, and McCain certainly doesn't have it, so Sarah had better step up if she wants to win.

I agree with this statement 100%.

Just remember these words if Obama is elected and reinstates the "Fairness Doctrine".

ekserekseez -> RE: Is Oprah Biased? Host Won't Interview Palin (9/6/2008 11:42:59 PM)

The Fairness Doctrine will be reinistated by Congress, not McCain/Obama/Barr/Paul/Nader/Whoever.

And the Democrats will almost certainly increase their majorities in both houses, regardless of who wins the White House. So don't get too eager about those McCain appointees to the Supreme Court! I know that he says he'll appoint judges like Scalia and Thomas, but you know as well as I do that McCain often lies. And I know he's on the record as anti-abortion, but he is not passionate on the issue. If he wins, he will not spend what little political capital he has to force through extremely conservative justices, or any other legislation.

I know, off topic. Back to the topic: look for regulation of "biased" talk radio, but NEVER of either cable/satellite TV or of the Internet, when it comes to political content.

I still think that Palin should go on Ellen, Daily Show, or Colbert Report. Who gives a rip about Oprah? Oh yeah, the two thirds of Americans who think that she's god. For a nation without formal social classes, we certainly have a lot of the great unwashed.
