Since the return of "The Clarks" [:@] oops I mean "The Nelons". Lets take a poll. I listened to the new Nelons music today and a little taken back at the Contemporary flavor of all the songs. So let's vote, please select from the following new names for what it is we do...ready

I don't understand the question. Are you asking from an artist's point of view "what WE do" or are you asking from a fan point of view??? I think Southern Gospel is evolving, but I don't think it needs a new name. I didn't care much for the "old" Southern Gospel music. I prefer the updated sounds from most of the groups today, except the real contemporary praise and worship stuff.

L5FanLady -> RE: CHANGE (9/6/2008 8:40:43 AM)

It's called "SOUTHERN GOSPEL MUSIC" and that's the way I like it![8|]

robertyork -> RE: CHANGE (9/6/2008 9:13:42 AM)

I kinda wonder if going the Contempary Route on songs might be what's wrong with some of the attendance at concerts. I think, at least in our area, that people like the old Southern Gospel Songs. New Southern Gospel Songs also go over well, but when you have the Contempary or Praise & Worship type of songs people just don't seem to enjoy it as much. They probably get enough of that at their Church, so they are looking for concerts for that GOOD OLE SOUTHERN GOSPEL MUSIC.

Amen...I agree with both posts

What does it matter what they are singing, how they are singing it, or what they are calling themselves as long as they are doing what God wants them to do?

I don't think it matters for the group - as long as they are doing what God wants them to do - but it does matter to the audience. There are some styles that I just don't enjoy.

Yep. Any style where I can't hear the words and understand the message I don't care for.

Billboy -> RE: CHANGE (9/6/2008 11:51:38 PM)

To quote an old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" IMHO, it is not broken.

PaulPate -> RE: CHANGE (9/7/2008 12:18:43 AM)

Southern fried chicken by any other name is still southern fried chicken. Southern Gospel music by any other name is still Southern Gospel!!

But, there are those who are reached by the very style of music that some of us may not particularly care for. If the Nelons are doing what God wants them to and they are reaching people then I don't see a problem with it, even if I don't care for that particular style.

L5FanLady -> RE: CHANGE (9/7/2008 8:16:01 AM)

That's a good point, Jeff. In witnessing, you will reach people I cannot reach, and I will reach people that you cannot reach. So it is with music. We need TO REACH THEM!! However that may be.

Kath -> RE: CHANGE (9/7/2008 4:13:04 PM)

Please be careful this does not turn into a CCM vs SG thread. If it does it will be moved to the Music folder.

Sincerely
Kath

Kerrlaw -> RE: CHANGE (9/7/2008 10:35:47 PM)

Southern Gospel is fine with me.

The umbrella has spread a little to include some country, bluegrass, and more progressive sounds.

I personally prefer a more traditional sound, but I trust that God will lead the artists where they need to go.

Dinana -> RE: CHANGE (9/8/2008 7:11:20 AM)

Yep, what he ^ said!!

Qtman -> RE: CHANGE (9/8/2008 7:49:12 AM)

I agree with Kerrlaw. Leave it Southern Gospel. Just because a artist records a few songs that are progressive or even not SG does not change the genre or the group. THey are still listed as a SG group.

Look at the secular music. For example, Elvis recorded several gospel songs. Did that make him a gospel artist. He also recorded several country songs. Did that make him a country srtist? I don't think so.

A rose by any other name is still a rose. Southern Gospel will always be Southern Gospel regardless.

yustme -> RE: CHANGE (9/8/2008 1:30:38 PM)

I didn't vote because the HS really moved in people when Gospel music was just that,Gospel music.I remember when there were no labels on Gospel music,and I liked it much better then.However,my preference is "Southern"Gospel.
