solomonsprayer -> What Are Obama's Accomplishments? (9/4/2008 9:53:02 PM)

It's often mocked and criticized of Obama that he has a thin resume and no accomplishments to list that support his qualifications for President of the U.S.

Sean Hannity (I don't like him) today asked a caller to list three accomplishments of Obama that make him qualified to be U.S. Prez.

The caller could not answer....Hannity laughed.

What, then, are Obama's accomplishments? We know some of his views (though he flip-flops a lot), but what about his past and record?

How might an Obama supporter answer Hannity?

csl7037 -> RE: What Are Obama's Accomplishments? (9/4/2008 9:56:21 PM)

In fairness, even if the caller had a mile long list of accomplishments, I doubt Hannity would've let him get it out. Even if I agree with Hannity more often than night, I don't like him either. And I couldn't name three real Obama accomplishments either.

Well,...he'd probably let them finish, but he'd be sure to refute them and mock them probably. Just a guess.

In terms of agreement with Hannity, I agree with him on substantive issues about 75%, but like you said I dislike him.

Still, what exactgly are Obama's accomplishments?

tinydancer2 -> RE: What Are Obama's Accomplishments? (9/5/2008 12:19:37 AM)

Well, if I got it correctly by searching at wikepidia he has few degrees, was a teacher, is a Senator..his working with communities was mocked, I think. He does have some explanation to do I suppose, as some may think he is lacking in the department of accomplishments.

I do find this situation a bit funny, funny because to some kids dreams comes true.. who wants to compare a nation with other, right? Particularly the USA and its great standards.. But Brasil's President Lula from Labor Party mostly accomplishments were a "joke" to some and he became a President of surprising accomplishments and economical surplus. I would have not vote for him if I was living in Brasil, still, I do find remarkable how a poor boy from one of the poorest states in Brasil, with no education not even high school became a President. But that kind of thing would be not allowed to happen in the USA I supose.

solomonsprayer -> RE: What Are Obama's Accomplishments? (9/5/2008 12:27:58 AM)

His accomplishments are tainted in many people's eyes though.

Obama was a community organizer out of college, but was involved with the convicted slum lord.

He taught constitutional law and was a civil rights lawyer.

Not bad.

Then became Senator...but is criticized for having many no votes and also not writing any significant legislation.

The Harvard/Columbia degrees are impressive, but he's seen as elitist and backstabbing with his "clinging to their guns and religion" comments...and the "bitter Americans" (where he said whites were bitter that they've lost socio-economic ground, due to minority advancements...and blacks were bitter for their feeling of continued lack of opportunity) comment as well.

I don't think he's got no accomplishments actually. Just not enough experience to trust. I'd like to see more from him personally......

His accomplishments? Ummmm....? lol
I understand why the caller couldnt answer. Ive seen that happen alot during this time. No one that likes Obama can name on a whim what hes done or what hes claiming to do.

No, he does have accomplishments. But I think they are not significant enough to be President of the U.S.

Aside from no stand-out accomplishments, his character (shady personal relationships) and political stances (those he actually has....which are constantly changing) are called into question.

So I do think he has accomplishments, but again they are not stand-out things. His greatest strength perhaps is his speaking abilities.

Give him 5-10 more years. He may have something solid by then.

Absolutely agree. He can give a speech for sure and he is intelligent by all accounts. But as you said - what he knows isnt enough for him to be President.
Especially in the times we are living in now. It would truly be a mistake beyond whats reasonable.

This will be a short thread.

One of Obama's accomplishments is in voter registration. He worked in some kind of leadership role for ACORN.

ACORN spends much of it's time and resources attempting to nullify the votes of legal Americans. It is a crooked organization that has been frequently caught committing voter registration fraud.

An internet search will turn up many stories like the following.

Obama has a wide lead in the polls among illegally registered voters.

So is this bad for Obama?...as an accomplishment, is this diminished because he may have been in on the fraud?...Or at least associated with it right?...

That doesn't sound too good. [8|]

jfwink -> RE: What Are Obama's Accomplishments? (9/5/2008 2:43:04 AM)

Its an understatement to say he's a great orator. He's also the first African-American nominee of a major party for president. He's been elected to the US Senate, and he can run effective campaigns. Beyond that I'm not sure. But those are some pretty big accomplishments by themselves.

Matt Smith -> RE: What Are Obama's Accomplishments? (9/5/2008 3:20:03 AM)

His legislative accomplishments are easy to find with a websearch. I don't need to do the websearch for you. You can handle it yourself.

He writes his own speeches. He's not just parroting somebody else's talking points. He's smart enough and his ideas are organized enough that he can speak his own mind. Find somebody else doing that.

His book (Audacity of Hope) is about our nation's past, present, and future. He's given deep thought to what America is, and he's put all his thoughts on display for the world to vet. He wrote it himself. It's more than any other candidate has done. You can read the book and learn how he sees things.

He speaks off the cuff to reporters. Meanwhile, McCain's handlers have largely put the kibosh on that for him, and they've just told the press that Palin will ONLY speak from prepared remarks for the rest of the campaign. (I assume the VP debate is an exception.) So while I don't think it should be a big deal, apparently taking questions from the press is a level of approachability and transparency that we can't expect from all presidential contenders.

He picked his own VP. [:D]

Not bad if he was running for mayor or circuit court judge.

you missed the goal...posting BO's accomplishments.

also, you can't deny that he is a good speaker and a good writer of his own life and thoughts....too bad that he couldn't use that to promote any legislation in congress!

as Giuliani put it: nothing, NADA!!!

Outside of the color of his skin, i think you are confusing abilities with accomplishments.

Sometimes I think people need to pass a test before they can vote[8|]

....which is simply false.

..from wikipedia:

As a member of the Democratic minority in the 109th Congress, he helped create legislation to control conventional weapons and to promote greater public accountability in the use of federal funds. He also made official trips to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. During the 110th Congress, he helped create legislation regarding lobbying and electoral fraud, climate change, nuclear terrorism, and care for returned U.S. military personnel. After announcing his presidential campaign in February 2007, Obama emphasized withdrawing American troops from Iraq, energy independence, decreasing the influence of lobbyists, and promoting universal health care as top national priorities.

You have to admit, that is not bad for a junior Senator. Now I wonder what John McCain's accomplishments where in his first four years in the Senate?

McCain didn't try running for president during his first term with such a limited resume....

Exactly. And Senator McCain is obviously more experienced than Senator Obama. But that wasn't the point I was addressing.

In 1987, McCain five times intervened with Federal authorities at the request of his campaign contributor Charles Keating, then under investigation.

McCain was one of the sponsors and driving forces behind the Indian Gaming Regulation Act of 1988, which - among other things - made gambling far more available across American than it had been previously.

McCain was a big fan of the bureaucratic, ultimately futile Gramm-Rudman Act, yet another big Federal number-shuffling program with no real affect on any real-world reality at all.

It would if John McCain were running for President as a junior Senator. But he is not, nor did he.

ATTEMPTED HUMOR LAMP LIT

Off topic - I think you mean "bated" breath.

"Baited" (sic) breath implies that you've been eating sushi.

ATTEMPTED HUMOR LAMP OFF

Seriously, I'd like a comparative list of the two men's accomplishment's too.
