DaveW -> print driver problem (9/2/2008 5:52:05 PM)

I have a HP 2600n laser printer and I love it. It is hooked up to the router in our home network.

The problem: DS has a game tweaked comp running Win XP 64 on an intel quadcore. He can find no 64 bit drivers anywhere for this printer, for either XP 64 or Vista 64. The regular 32 bit drivers will not work with his system.

The weird thing is the earlier model, the 1600, has 64 bit drivers.

Anyone have an idea what to do?

Only the obvious, e-mail HP support.

He did that.

REPLY: HP has no plans on making a 64 bit OS driver for that printer.

Did you try any of the drivers that are built into windows in the add printer wizard menu?

Most of the HPs will print with a generic plc 6 driver.

Yeah that was tried.

This printer is enough different that even the regular XP drivers will not work, you have to use the specific drivers from HP.

Are you sure you have the model number right? Going to HP's Support and Drivers section and putting in 2600n gives me an option to download Vista 64-bit Drivers. Is the website messed up and offering drivers that don't really work for Vista 64-bit? That doesn't seem to be the case, since Microsoft is listing the Color LaserJet 2600n as Vista 64-bit comptabile.

Yeah right printer, My son is running XP x64, that is the os we are trying to get a driver for.

It's a long shot, but you could try the universal driver:

Likely not a long shot. This printer is a brain dead printer and the universal driver was written for the 64 bit operating systems and this printer.

Greetings,

Hey Dave, maybe this will help and point you in the right direction...

A while back one of my sisters at church gave me a printer in exchange for some repair work I did for her, the printer was a freebie that was bundled with Dell, and it is a USB Dell 720 Photo printer which only worked on WinXP, but at the time I was only running WIN98Se, [:(]

SO I found out that a Lexmark 600 USB driver when installed on the 98 machine would print to the Dell 720...after a little manipulation

Perhaps there is a tweak that would also work between the 32 and 64 bit in the same way ….depending if there are similarities’ in the manufacture of the printer ...which would mean that another 64 bit driver (not necessarily HP) that is backwards capable to 32 Bit ...may work in like manner.

Just a thought

My son looked at these and said they were doing strange things to trick the OS into thinking it was something else. We found a way to get his older printer (the HP 1600) which DOES have 64 bit drivers available hooked up. We were having space and network issues with it which we finally solved.

Thanks everyone.
