Just for the record, Dan, it is not just science that is substandard. The entire curriculum has been politically compromised. There is no "good" curricula presented at any school now. Pick a state and compare it to the international level.

True. In general, I don't see many people being taught to think - just to memorize. That was certainly my experience in school.

Especially the so called "science" of evolution being taught in our schools today.

Actually, there's a fair amount of interesting, compelling evidence supporting the theory of evolution (the clincher for me was the existence and pattern of endogenous retroviruses). But to avoid getting too far OT, there are plenty of folks in the Science forum willing to explain further.

The global warming theory is going into the freezer, some climate experts say.

The first half of this year was the coolest in at least five years, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). And the global warming that has taken place during the past 30 years is over, says geologist Don J. Easterbrook, a professor emeritus at Western Washington University.

Easterbrook, who has written eight books and 150 journal publications, predicts that temperatures will cool between 2065 and 2100 and that global temperatures at the end of the century will be less than 1 degree cooler than now. This is in contrast to other theories saying that temperatures will warm by as much as 10 degrees by 2100.

Experts Scale Back Sea Level Rise Forecast

Thursday, September 4, 2008 9:33 PM

WASHINGTON - Worldwide sea levels may rise by about 2.6 to 6.6 feet by 2100 thanks to global warming, but dire predictions of larger increases seem unrealistic, U.S. scientists said on Thursday.

They examined scenarios for loss of ice from Greenland, Antarctica and the world's smaller glaciers and ice caps into the world's oceans, as well as ocean expansion simply due to rising water temperatures.

Their calculations yielded estimates for global sea level increases by the end of the century that are lower than many existing projections, but alarming nonetheless.

"If you look at the actual mechanics of how glaciers work, there doesn't seem to be a realistic way that we know about to get more than about 2 meters of sea level rise in the next century," Tad Pfeffer of the University of Colorado's Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, whose study was published in the journal Science, said in a telephone interview.

Increase twice the size of Germany: "colder weather" to blame.

Data from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) has indicated a dramatic increase in sea ice extent in the Arctic regions. The growth over the past year covers an area of 700,000 square kilometers: an amount twice the size the nation of Germany.

With the Arctic melting season over for 2008, ice cover will continue to increase until melting begins anew next spring.

One of the problems are the plethora of whiny parents and students that think they should just be able to show up and get an A. My wife, a high school teacher, has more problems with the attitudes of the parents and students in her AP class than with the failing ones (other than their apathy).

But education is also more valued in other countries than here in the US and people here have more of a chance to get a good education. But unfortunately for the average lazy (I just wanna party!) high school or college student effort is required to get a good education. Aw darn does that mean I'll have to stop texting?

Back on topic: Picked up a copy of the 2009 Farmer's Almanac and they predict a period of global cooling (one scientist called it a mini-ice age) for the next 50 years based on solar data and the latest ocean temperature measurements.

MIT scientists baffled by global warming theory, contradicts scientific data
Trendwatch
By Rick C. Hodgin
Thursday, October 30, 2008 09:55

Boston (MA) - Scientists at MIT have recorded a nearly simultaneous world-wide increase in methane levels. This is the first increase in ten years, and what baffles science is that this data contradicts theories stating man is the primary source of increase for this greenhouse gas. It takes about one full year for gases generated in the highly industrial northern hemisphere to cycle through and reach the southern hemisphere. However, since all worldwide levels rose simultaneously throughout the same year, it is now believed this may be part of a natural cycle in mother nature - and not the direct result of man's contributions.

Methane - powerful greenhouse gas

The two lead authors of a paper published in this week's Geophysical Review Letters, Matthew Rigby and Ronald Prinn, the TEPCO Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Science, state that as a result of the increase, several million tons of new methane is present in the atmosphere.

Methane accounts for roughly one-fifth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, though its effect is 25x greater than that of carbon dioxide. Its impact on global warming comes from the reflection of the sun's light back to the Earth (like a greenhouse). Methane is typically broken down in the atmosphere by the free radical hydroxyl (OH), a naturally occuring process. This atmospheric cleanser has been shown to adjust itself up and down periodically, and is believed to account for the lack of increases in methane levels in Earth's atmosphere over the past ten years despite notable simultaneous increases by man.

Why I recanted
'There is no evidence to support the idea that carbon emissions cause significant global warming'

David Evans, Financial Post

I devoted six years to carbon accounting when I built models for the Australian Greenhouse Office. I am the rocket scientist who wrote the carbon accounting model (FullCAM) that measures Australia's compliance with the Kyoto Protocol, in the land use change and forestry sector.

FullCAM models carbon flows in plants, mulch, debris, soils and agricultural products, using inputs such as climate data, plant physiology and satellite data. I've been following the global warming debate closely for years.

When I started that job in 1999 the evidence that carbon emissions caused global warming seemed pretty good: CO2 is a greenhouse gas; the old ice core data; no other suspects.

some important points from the article.

quote:

The greenhouse signature is missing. We have been looking and measuring for years, and cannot find it. ...

...The satellites that measure the world's temperature all say that the warming trend ended in 2001, and that the temperature has dropped about 0.6 degrees Celsius in the past year (to the temperature of 1980)

It's interesting that such a high level proponent has admitted the models don't match the reality.

The world has never seen such freezing heat
By Christopher Booker
Last Updated: 12:01am GMT 16/11/2008

A surreal scientific blunder last week raised a huge question mark about the temperature records that underpin the worldwide alarm over global warming. On Monday, Nasa's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), which is run by Al Gore's chief scientific ally, Dr James Hansen, and is one of four bodies responsible for monitoring global temperatures, announced that last month was the hottest October on record.

This was startling. Across the world there were reports of unseasonal snow and plummeting temperatures last month, from the American Great Plains to China, and from the Alps to New Zealand. China's official news agency reported that Tibet had suffered its "worst snowstorm ever". In the US, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration registered 63 local snowfall records and 115 lowest-ever temperatures for the month, and ranked it as only the 70th-warmest October in 114 years.

So what explained the anomaly? GISS's computerised temperature maps seemed to show readings across a large part of Russia had been up to 10 degrees higher than normal. But when expert readers of the two leading warming-sceptic blogs, Watts Up With That and Climate Audit, began detailed analysis of the GISS data they made an astonishing discovery. The reason for the freak figures was that scores of temperature records from Russia and elsewhere were not based on October readings at all. Figures from the previous month had simply been carried over and repeated two months running.

I'm pretty sure that most "there's nothing to see here folks, move along now..." experts are ignoramuses, attention-seekers, or political operatives, but that said...

I wish I had thought to ask when I was in college, if the ice recedes and the Earth becomes more tropical, won't that mean more plant life, meaning more carbon sequestration, which would eventually counteract the warming? (assuming human urban development goes in a vertical direction in the future instead of spreading out and killing more plantstuff)

I'm a pilot by trade and a geologist by degree. I'm constantly amazed at how small the population centers are when I am at work. By night, the countryside is lit up by numerous lights. Yet the same areas are obviously farmland by day. Even many smaller communities have a large number of trees throughout their communities. Even large urban areas along the coastlines aren't really that large in relation to the surrounding countryside.

UN Blowback: More Than 650 International Scientists Dissent Over Man-Made Global Warming Claims
quote:

POZNAN, Poland - The UN global warming conference currently underway in Poland is about to face a serious challenge from over 650 dissenting scientists from around the globe who are criticizing the climate claims made by the UN IPCC and former Vice President Al Gore. Set for release this week, a newly updated U.S. Senate Minority Report features the dissenting voices of over 650 international scientists, many current and former UN IPCC scientists, who have now turned against the UN. The report has added about 250 scientists (and growing) in 2008 to the over 400 scientists who spoke out in 2007. The over 650 dissenting scientists are more than 12 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers.

Here is interesting site with lot's of information from our neighbors to the north.

Yet we have this

quote:

After huddling with former Vice President Al Gore about climate change, President-elect Barack Obama declared, "The time for delay is over, the time for denial is over."

While it is a problem, it is also an opportunity to create jobs, make economy stronger, and make the nation safer, even as the United States helps save the planet, he said.

Gonna create jobs? Not the job of the government but Global Warming sure is a tool to use to grab more money and power ain't it.

There is also this, I guess these guys are only interested in the data or scientists supporting GW

Africans to Unlock $990 Million Global-Warming Fund (Update1) Email | Print | A A A
By Alex Morales

quote:

Dec. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Poor countries at the United Nations climate talks in Poland may win approval to tap into a $990 million fund as early as next month to cope with the damage of global warming, their biggest victory in 11 days of debate.

Envoys from the 187 nations negotiating in Poznan, Poland, plan to change rules so that countries in need of aid may apply for them starting in January, said Yvo de Boer, the UN’s climate chief. “I expect and hope that we will see the launch of the adaptation fund” by then, he said at talks due to end tomorrow.

$990million dollars, hmmm, i thought there was only monetary gain to be had by being a skeptic.

This guy must be bought and paid for by the oil companies.

quote:

OGUNQUIT — One of the hottest environmental topics in the world — global warming — was the subject of a seminar offered Dec. 6 by the Ogunquit Conservation Commission.

Nationally known lecturer and Ogunquit resident Tom Wysmuller presented "The colder side of global warming," a two-hour slide show, to about three dozen people.

Wysmuller has been lecturing on the topic since the early 1990s. His presentation was based on research work done on the polar ice cap by Maurice Ewing and William Donn. Their work and ice cores taken by scientists in Russia at the Vostok ice station have measured changes in the temperature and carbon dioxide levels over the past 400,000 years, Wysmuller said.

"The cores show carbon dioxide and temperature levels increase periodically," he said. "There have been four distinct ice ages and warming phases in that time."

Wysmuller argues that the current spike in temperature and carbon dioxide levels are approaching levels that existed just prior to the most recent ice age. What that means, he said, is that we are nearing a period when temperatures will actually start to decrease and weather patterns dramatically change.

How many times do people need to be told? Weather is not the same as climate.

It's simply inane to claim that just because some places got unusually cold weather for a couple of days -- or even that the whole country is having a much colder than average winter -- that it somehow invalidates the theory of global warming.

Last Tuesday, here in Austin, TX, we had a record high temperature of 81 degrees in the afternoon, and it snowed less than six hours later. Climate is about long term trends, not day-by-day changes in the weather.

But the facts are that the long term trends for the last few years show a cooling trend inspite of increased CO2. Prior to that information the GW supporters were touting how the 90's were the hottest decade ever then when it is pointed out to them that the last few years are cooling they say well that is just too short a time to mean anything

Now if we could just determine exactly how long such a term should be; 1000 years? 10? A Million?
