ORIGINAL: mutinywxgirl John - see earlier post where he talks about chasing into a wood chipper. That's why I asked. He claims innocence of the chain saw, but we know he already likes wood chippers!!

ORIGINAL: KuKu Ya know... people say I make a killer beef stew... If you can plan murders, how about just watching them happen for hours and hours on end? CSI, L&O, Numbers, Cold Case, Criminal Minds... if you can spot the errors in each one, then you could avoid them Of course most of the "forensics" on those shows are closer to magic than real science. (It's actually caused some problems in real trials because juries are starting to expect such miracles.) The most common and most laughable one is where they enhance video, turning three pixels from grainy security camera footage into full-screen crystal-clear images of perps. AAARRRRRGGGHHH! (Interestingly, the least egregious of the lot seems to be NCIS. They even get a lot of the computer stuff right. Or close to it anyway.) -Robb Is this all of them, or just CSI? I know L&O doesn't tend to do this, but they are like 90% of the time based on real situations... but Numbers and CMinds I don't know a well...

Three shows' worth. The others are better since the forensics are not their focus. But I'm pretty sure I've seen the image enhancement thing even on L&O. It's nearly universal. (Seeing the detective work on L&O is really cool sometimes... seeing how the tiniest clue gets followed, etc.) -Robb

That said - almost nothing makes me more mad than when they put up a bullet or a fingerprint into NIBIN or AFIS ... and it comes back 2 seconds later MATCH MATCH MATCH! That isn't how it works - and it isn't that fast! And all of that is IF you find an intact bullet or fingerprint - they never look like those on the show. The effect on the jury is known as the "CSI effect" ... juries expect there always to be DNA, fingerprints, etc ... and that just isn't so. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
