and the orange color filled Oreos too. They look so pretty!

I really was against Halloween for a while. I listened to all the stuff about it being evil. But then I remembered my childhood and there was nothign about Halloween being evil and how my kids never thought of it that way either, so I gave in.

Mee too

We celebrate Halloween with costumes, candy and decorating the house. It's a great excuse to take the kids around the neighbourhood and they love it.

Unfortunately my Things are getting too old to Trick or Treat so I'll see what they have in mind for this year. *shrug*

WHAT???? You're never to old to Trick or Treat. Tell 'em I said so.

I can see it now, "Things...The Lioness says one is never too old to trick or treat so don your costumes and grab your plastic pumpkin buckets and get out there and get your mum you some candy!!!!"

"Huh? The Lioness?" "I'll bet she's even older than Mum!" "Whoa! That's OLD!"

Sorry! The conversation took off without me! *giggle*

The good thing is, Thing 2 doesn't eat chocolate candy so guess who gets it??? Mmmmhmmm...Mum's hips!!!

Bad Things! Bad!

My neighborhood must have a reputation as a good place to TrT. They buss them in. Well o.k. i have never seen anything bigger that a 15 passenger van. Mostly little ones. I love to watch the little ones all dressed up going door to door. Most everyone in my neighborhood either waits on them outside or at least at the door. This last about two hours. By then the little ones are tired, on a sugar high and have gone home to sleep it off. Thats when the ones with facial hair driving themselves through the neighborhood with a pillow case for the goodies show up. At this point I turn off the porch light and lock the door. If I am going to furnish chocolate to a big kid it is going to be me.

I personally think that Halloween is what you make of it. If you go into it with evil intentions, then it can be an evil holiday. but i see nothing wrong with having the fantasy of dressing up like a ballerina or power ranger and giving kids candy. i think it can be a pretty harmless and very imaginative holiday.

Must go all the way back to the first page for the perfect summation. Our church has a "Fall Festival." I'm hoping to convince my cousin to do what we did last year. I took the little ones to the Fall Festival at church and afterwards she took my oldest ToTing. Worked out great since the little ones are worn out after the Festival.

Costumes... well, last year I tried to convince DS1 that we should go as the Penseives. He has Peter, me as Susan and then the little ones as Edmund and Lucy. He wouldn't go for it. I was soooo disappointed because it would have been a perfect excuse for me to dress up too! Maybe this year!

I LOVE theme costumes like that. I think it's so cute and clever. Unfortunately, seven year old boys are immune to cute... in fact allergic to it.

Why not go as the Justice Leage - plenty to choose from there.

Last year, the church I was going to had a "Trunk or Treat" and the members would decorate the trunks of their car, fill them with candy and park them in the church parking lot. The decorations were not to be "evil" -- like vampires, werewolves, etc -- but anything else was cool. One fellow had a net and a fishing pole with a magnet on it and let the kids "fish" for candy and he had a sign up that read about being Fishers of Men. It was very innovative. The church also had a huge chili dinner set up in the center of the lot (BIG parking lot) and they had a barrel set up to build a fire in so kids could roast marshmallows. It was really fun.

is your church doing something special?

We're having a carnival-type deal in our gym as an alternative to Halloween for the kids.

.... it's going to have a bounce house, too. Forget trick or treating, seeing my pastor make it explode will be much more entertaining.

It all depends on the trick or the treat.

I'm presuming that you're all American.

If you saw how Halloween was "celebrated" in the UK, I don't think you'd be as keen to be promoting it, honestly.

For our police force, for example, it's the worst night of the year.

That's terrible, I had no idea.

For us locally...it's just another night for the police.

Of course, we've always had the regional fair in town for Halloween, so that might help to attract people away from trouble.

The town where I went to college actually canceled all forms of Halloween celebration and encouraged the university to plan for semi finals to be the day after Halloween.

This was after looting, cars were turned upside down, a couple of murders, and many, many drunken rapes.

I completely share you sentiment, Manda. Not to mention I grew up on military bases so we didn't have to deal with that anyway.

Let me get this in early so that those who wish to ignore it can do so in peace and those who wish to can have the opportunty to respond and get it out of their systems.

The Scriptures provide us with specific opportunties to do all of the "good things" the derived "holidays" bring without the need for doing those things, which one might consider questionable. At this time of year: The Feast of Trumpets provides us with the opportunity to make noise and prepare oneself for Yeshua's return. Yom Kippur(The Day of Atonement) provides us with an opportunity for reflection on those thing we have not done correctly over the last year and reminds us that we can let go of those things because Adonai has accepted Yeshua's sacrifice. And, here is the tie in to this tread, Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles, is when we can identify with our dear departed while we camp out in the crisp Autumn air as they did in the wilderness. For those with ears to hear, I also think this last is when Yeshua was actually born.

There it is. If one wishes to discuss these things in the conrtext of "Halloween/Thanksgiving", I would be happy to take part in the discussion. Otherwise, I will leave others to their celebrations.

Halloween was my second favorite "holiday" of the year (after Christmas of course) when I was a kid. I could dress up as a pirate or a ghost, and my dad would take us to a few of the country neighbors for great treats of cookies, popcorn balls, caramel apples, cider and candy, then drop us off in town where we roamed the streets with our friends hitting up all the houses that had lights on until 9 or so when we'd go to the tavern to meet up with my dad, who was usually in a game of pinochle with other dads, then go home with our pails full of treats.

I personally think its silly for a person of faith to criticize Halloween. Its just a holiday. Its just a day where kids dress up and get candy and go home. Of course obviously i think thats where it should end though. I mean its not right to believe in God and try to follow the bible and then choose a day to go out and hunt for demons or whatever.
But its just a day. Its up to the individual what they make it to be.
For a Christian thats been cleared of their sins and delivered from the evil one they have nothing to worry about. Evil cant touch them. Ive celebrated Halloween since i can remember and nothing evil has ever happened to me. I doubt its ever happened to anyone to be honest. And if it did then it most likely had to do with what they were doing and not the fact it was Halloween.
