One of my dd's has the middle name of Piper. She's named after the Christian author John Piper. It was on our short list of first and middle names for her. Blessings, Garsy

Indeed it did not! I just wanted to say that I'm pretty sure it did make it over here, but it was lost after just a season or two. You can still watch the original show re-runs on Sci-Fi channel, but I preferred the newer version (by newer, I mean 1990 or so lol). I will admit I loved Barnabus!

I am not fond of what a relative named their daughter, Charisma. I don't know why they would put that on their child. I friend of mine had a student named Pajamas. It was pronounced Paj-ju-mus with the a being a short a. My name is not a weird name but it is not common. Added with an unequally uncommon last name I just didn't like it. I felt like I stuck out in the crowd and I am one that likes to blend in. I really didn't like being the only one with my name so I did tend to name my girls more popular names than not.

With all the weird things parents are doing these days with kids what they name them is the least of my worries. We've got girls out there having babies at 13 and 14, many split and blinded families, the general pressure of raising Godly children in an ungodly world. So I truly don't think names are big issue, as long as they aren't naming them something vulgar, why do I care. Kim Q

I think parents now (and over the last say 25 years) are more in tune with names "meanings'. I asked mom and dad why they named me My Name. Because they liked it.... end of conversation. John Glenn went up two days after I was born so they thought about naming me that but mom said every kid she knew named John(ny), was a brat and she didn't want one. Our older D's name is a derivative grandpa's name. Her middle name is her great grandma's The younger's first name is derived from my mom and second name is derived from my wife's mom's. It was more about praying she would have their character than what the base of name was and it's meaning. My great grandmother's name was Hazel and I loved her to death but I couldn't bring myself to name my daughter that. Who knew that years later Julia Roberts would name her kid that and everyone thought it was cool. I think I will name our next cat Hazel though.

I love names. Actually, as someone who makes up stories for a living, threads like this are fascinating to me. I keep a list of names that I've added a few to after reading this thread. Some of my favorites that I've come across: I knew this little boy when I worked at the Y whose name was Sir Elton. His mother insisted that he not be called by anything else. Don't call him Elton. Don't call him Sir. Call him Sir Elton. It always felt odd but fun at the same time. In my Y, there was an influx of African-American twins with rhyming names. I've had Taniesha and Kaniesha. Laquesha and Latesha. Sha'Naia and Tra'Naia. I loved those names! A good friend of mine is named Joshilyn Jackson (she writes good fiction... check her out...) The H is silent, so her name is pronounced Joss eh lynn, but people always call her Josh-eh-lynn. I have a daughter named Jocelyn (Joss-eh-lynn) and people are always calling her Josh-eh-lynn. My inlaws call her Joshie, and it drives me nuts! My personal weirded out one though was a 3 yo foster child whose parents were both still underage. His name was Damian, and he would proudly introduce himself as "Damian, the spawn of hell" to anyone who asked. Four months with us and I never got him to stop saying that...

We have three different friends who have kids named Damien, Darien and Dorian. I have been known to call them by one of the others' names.

Kylie has also become fairly common, though I had only heard it once before choosing it. Having the name Kylie is the exact reason my daughter has such an unusual name. I was one of at least (they're the ones I can actually remember) 15 Kylies at the high school I attended. I swore my daughter would never go through that. BTW, did you know that a kylie is a small, hunting boomerang. We chose a pretty, but quite unusual first name for her. God knew she would be who she was and led us to a name which means 'golden haired' and it fits her perfectly. Yes, she does have problems with people spelling it wrong or assuming it's one of a couple of well-known, older style names, but she knows the reasons she was given an unusual name and says she likes it, so that's all that matters. Her second name isn't biblical, but it does have spiritual significance to us. It means 'the narrow path'. Kylie
