To answer the question - if we had 4 day school weeks, I think that a lot of 'after school' stuff would get scheduled on Friday and kids would not be able to participate because their parents are working. So, if the parents get a 4 day week, we'd drive all day, but it would be as much driving as we would have done during the week.
You know, Scouts at 9, Piano at 12:30, Youth at 2. And it would be a nightmare because instead of Scouts in two different towns on two different nights, I would have them in two different towns with 1/2 hour between them and need to eat lunch too. Does that make sense?

Our college does not hold classes on Fridays. There are no services available, except the libraries. They are their own buildings, and remain climate controlled. Our call center remains open, too.
Workers in those two areas still work four day weeks, but they rotate their schedules.
As for pay:
We work 36 hours within four days. We are paid for 40 hours.
It evens out budgetarily because in order to earn over time, one must work four additional hours to make 40 before overtime compensation kicks in.
Ergo: the overtime budget is next to nil. In fact, the college SAVED money even compensating 40 hours of work for 36.
During extremely busy registration, it is understood that the 36 hour week is suspended. We usually get students served within the three week period. (Applications, Entrance Testing, Financial Aid, Advising, and then Add/Drop and Fees due)
Our leave time compensation continues to roll as if forty work hours were contributed by the worker.
It really is working marvelously. People don't hang around and chat. Lethargy is all but gone.
If you don't keep up......... then you will be quite uncomfortable on a Friday with no air conditioning in the buildings.  Because it is abundantly clear that they expect you to be working and caught up at all times. They don't crack the whip, because they don't have to.
Most workers really want to keep their three day weekends.

oh yea I can see that! Oh jeepers, just the thought of that scares the daylights out of me!
I could see me having one in play practice 14 mile one direction, one having scouts just down the street and another having soccer practice in the opposite direction and ALL at the same time! Ahhhh!!!!!!

I support a 4-day work week but not a 4-day school week. A business can reamain open 5-7 days even when offerning a 4 day work week by hiring more people or having people working different days/shifts. School is more difficult - I don't think young children would perform well if their day was extended. A 4-day work week is conducive for many reasons, not just the cost of gas. If you have a weekday off, you can schedule dr & other appts without taking time off work. You can also plan family time better by having a weekday off. My son and his wife both work 4-day work weeks - each with a different day off - and this saves them on child care costs and allows each of them a day of quality time with their daughter.

My luck if my kid's schools and my hubby's factory both went to 4 day weeks they'd end up with totally different days as that day off. The kids would get, say, Friday and hubby would end up with a Monday. Thankfully business is good for hubby's factory right now (except for some upper level management and engineers who are facing layoffs) and instead of considering 4 day weeks they are mandating Saturdays and asking for volunteers to work on Sundays.
