I love babies...but I never ever dreamed of having one. However, God blessed me with the most amazing child. I don't think I can ever love anyone else that much, nor can I love another child the way I love her. Though I'd like to have a big family, I know that it won't be coming from my own. HOpefully, when I get married, the man would have a couple of kids of his own. That's the only way I'll marry someone...if he's experienced having kids and would not require me to aid in procreation..

Hearing about childbirth makes adopting older children sound like a great idea.

Actually - the age group I have a heart for is so "unadoptable" ... I would LOVE the idea of adopting the older kids and loving on them and giving them some stability. We shall see!

Okay, EVERY time I see this thread - I want to go running in the other direction - I just SO don't do babies. ***shudders***

I understand mutinywxgirl. After being a truly atrocious camp counselor, I decided at 18 that I did not want to be a parent. So it was no big deal when I found out at 30 I was infertile.

My sister-in-law just had her fourth child. I am happy that she delivered safely and that the boy is healthy. I am not looking forward to visiting her or seeing my mother because I do not wish to deal with their superior attitudes based on the facts that they are married and have children. I am also concerned that I will not be properly awed by my nephew's existance.

In reality, that's what I want to do - adopt older children from war-torn countries (Bosnia, Kosovo, etc).

What a blessing that God has laid this on your heart. We can also go into every county shelter in America and see children in our own backyard that have been " war-torn " from neglect and abuse by the hands of their own parents.

I like the way y'all think, Losgan, Lisa and Samson! Sometimes I wonder if adopting children from homes where there was abuse, neglect, drugs, violence, etc. is more difficult than than adopting children from abroad. I have to have training on the effects of abuse, etc. on the brain, and it's scary. However, God is ultimately the one in control. If these kids are given a loving home to grow up in, they have a chance of making it. I've watched a few adopted individuals grow up (one is a little older than me, two are in high school) and I can tell you there are some challenges. It takes a special individual/family to adopt children because this is a full-time job, yet from what I'm told, VERY rewarding!!!

I have worked with this population for over 11 years, and on one hand, the results of the abuse these little ones have seen do indeed effect their behavior in very challenging ways. Those have had endured long time abuse have had their cortisol level so high that they do have permanent brain damage that is manifested in a variety of disorders that affect ... behaviors and decision making. I have so many stories ... but one that comes to mind was a little four year old girl who had been severely sexually molested for most of her very short life. We were in my car on the way to an appointment in town. I was going the speed limit at 60 mph when she let herself out of the car seat , jumped into the front seat to attack me as we were driving. I believe it was a suicide attempt on her part, she was trying to get us in an accident. I praise God I had the presence of mind to get a hold of her and gently, but firmly against the seat so I could find a safe place to pull over and call for help. She kicked my rear view mirror right off of the window. When I did pull over, I did not have my phone with me so I needed to take her and the little five year old boy in with me to use their phone. (That little boy just sat in the back seat with his head between his knees, terrified.) She attempted to run into traffic. I managed to get her, and keep a hold on her as I called for back up.

While at the last shelter I worked at, we had a 12 year old boy who had been through more than most children. He started to hallucinate, which he attempted to hide, but was found out rather quickly. (It is a long story ... but God's hand was in it all the way.) After he began getting treatment, he was starting to realize that we really cared for him and wanted the very best for him. It was a foreign notion, and like so many more in his place, he tested it beyond the imagination by acting out. It may seem contrary to our own thinking, but often these children who have never experienced real love have a hard time believing it is true. It's as if they are saying, "You say you love me unconditionally, but will you love me if I do this?" He acted out to the point it became dangerous for the other kids in the shelter and we had to find alternate placement. I do not remember crying as hard as I did the day we let him go ... my heart was so broken I bawled for hours ... and prayed for him. The story has a happy ending. He was placed in therapeutic foster care and was later adapted by that same family ... and he is now excelling.

It does take a very special calling ... but I think there are many who are called to work with these little ones and bring them into their homes, but are not receptive to hearing the Lord's voice in the matter. His word tells us that the Harvest is plenty but the workers are few, Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. We need more workers, and more families willing to take them in. If he calls you to it ... He will equip you for the task.

There are many very precious babies and children that need our prayers ... and need workers. Pray that God would rise up those workers.
