Hi all:

I have AVG Free. I think I have a Trojan Horse that has invaded my computer. Warning windows keep popping up, so, I hit "heal." What can I do to clean my computer? I tried going to Mcafee to do a scan, but, it did not work. Also, I do not have a router, is that important?

What do the warning windows say? I need to know why you are going to McAfee is you have AVG?

Does it say the name of the Trojan ?

Also download spybot search and destroy, update it and run it. It may find things that the other programs don't.

Note: There are some fake spyware programs like Antivirus 2008 and others out that look like the microsoft screens but they aren't.

I know I used to use ActiveScan before the days of buying Norton. My Norton just recently expired and I keep getting these pop ups asking me to repurchase it. The problem is that there is no where to tell it to stop! I am looking for alternatives to Norton for my next purchase. I guess I'll have to dig into the research again and find the recommended one. ActiveScan is from Panda software and is a FREE online virus scanner.

Go to www.malwarebytes.org and download the anti-malware program.

same thing happened to me and I ended up having to take it to PC Fix because my hard drive was completely destroyed. Now I have Active Scan, Symatnec and Norton and I scan about twice a week, . The Norton and Symantec are great and I also have a blocker that if a site has sex, violence, hatred other criteria, it automatically shuts down. not that I visit those sites, but even if something is okay, if it had certain words, it will still shut down.

oh and the PC guy told me to never visit myspace and it is a cesspool of viruses. There is free protection software you can download.

mvic beat me to it. Somehow I got a few trojans on my computer the other week. A friend sent me this link, and it took care of them. I don't know much about it, but it doesn't seem to be an antivirus. It is a good program to clean them from your computer though.

I was using AVG free, but the same friend that sent me the link above to malwarbytes also told me to try Avast. I made the switch. I'm still trying to get used to Avast.

I know that Trojan Horses are hard to get rid of because they hide themselves in standard files. I had one and I finally had to just erase the HD and start all over.

I clicked on a link that said there were several viruses on it. I was suspicious of even that however as it redirected me to another website and wanted me to download and install softare from there to "fix it" instead. My existing virus software didn't detect anything at all. I just ended up shutting down and reopening my browser instead.

There are many of those web pages out there. They are fake antivirus programs posing as real ones that say you have a virus and to download their program. They then ask you for a credit card number

XP Antivirus 2008 and 2009 are one of them

When I noticed that the virus software that wanted to run wasn't the software that I didn't have installed, I knew it was a fake.

Yes but a lot of people don't read it or panic and then they get infected.

I use Trend Micro's House Calls

It's a free scan and got rid of 6 trojans my daughter had on her computer.

My brotherinlaw, who finally got a computer, got sucked into that. He actually did give them his credit card number. I was sick when he told me. I told him to call the cc company right away to see what has happened and even cancel it. He's on dialup so it will take forever but I'm going to run housecalls on his computer if I can. It's stuck in some sort of diagnostic mode he said.
