standingstrong.cd -> is it ok to put baby in car seat in front if no back seat? (8/20/2008 10:26:03 PM)

I just bought a truck with no back seat and we have a 4 month old.
I know if I had a back seat, he would have to seat in the back, but what about in my truck? ps we all want our kids to be safe as possible
but we all can't aford the private schools the best neighborhoods or all the cars or trucks we would like so we make due and beleive for God to take care of the rest.

I would think a coup would've been cheaper, and certainly better gas mileage. Anyway, if there are airbags, then no, you should not do that. A deployed airbag can kill a child. If there are no airbags, then it isn't great but it isn't terrible.

Standing, when our little one was born we had an SUV and a 2 door pick up truck. Sometimes I had to drive with her in the truck and I just disabled the air bag.

Just make sure the air bag is disabled if it has one and you should be fine.

Unfortunately, there was a period of time after airbags became standard before they started giving them 'off' switches...so it might not be possible. These are things a parent should check on before making the purchase. Nothing-not money, vehicles or anything-is more important than children.

Air bags are dangerous to babies in car seats.

I have known someone who had a truck before the baby was conceived and they had the passenger side airbags taken out because they couldn't afford a new vehicle. I would also recommend that you take the car seat down to the fire or police department and have them fit it correctly. The front seat is not the best spot but a well-fitted car seat can help in case of an accident.

Totally agree with you, Jenny. I hope the OP comes back and lets us know if her truck is equipped with one or not.

I have had babies in the front seat in cars without airbags but not with.

It may have saved DD1 from serious injury. She was in the front seat with me. We were stopped to make a left turn into a parking lot. A car tried to pass us on the right in the shoulder in the ice/snow. He hit the back of my car. The back seat where DD sat when we were all in the car was covered with shards of broken glass from the broken window.

I also had a time when DD2 was an infant and I didn't have a car. I would borrow my parents old pick up if I had to go somewhere. No air bags in that either though.

Aubun, the seat check is also a very good suggestion--for anyone, really, with a child in a car seat.

HERE is a really fabulous web site. They have a message board and highly trained techs available to answer any questions you have. I spent quite a bit of time there last year and learned a lot. They are pretty quick to answer questions.[:)]

It's not the safest place but it would be ok as long as the airbags are turned off/taken out. Air bags kill children. Also, if you have a 4 month old then the car seat is supposed to face backwards which is an added danger if there's an airbag present (it can deploy and cause baby's face to be pushed against back of seat causing suffocation).

Memaw. -> RE: is it ok to put baby in car seat in front if no back seat? (8/21/2008 8:44:00 AM)

If there is an air bag on passenger side and if there isn't a switch to turn it off, you can go to your mechanic and he/she can disconnect it for you.

That is one of my favorite sites, I love the helpful techs. They are the reason I am such a nut about carseat safety and extended rearfacing.

Jenny-Fair -> RE: is it ok to put baby in car seat in front if no back seat? (8/21/2008 12:36:28 PM)

While getting the car seat check, I would find out if the middle of the front seat is safe if the driver has a working airbag...they do blow out pretty far, and I would be concerned that would be too close.

Ooooh...me too![:)] We did extended rear facing (not a super long time, but longer than anybody else I know around here).

I actually asked a ton of questions on that site before trading in my SUV for my car. GB had almost outgrown the seat she was in and I knew what carseat we wanted to buy, so we made sure of the fit and safety and all of that before buying the new car.

GB is 3 years old and we have THIS seat and she just loves it.

Cool! I love the Regent, and the new Frontier is an awesome looking seat. We ended up buying THIS one for now, and then we'll get a Regent or Frontier.

That one is very nice! Looks well padded and I like the curved headrest.[sm=thumbsup.gif]

It is okay as long as you make sure that there are NO airbags where baby will be placed or that they are disabled. It is preferred that they be in the backseat...but when there is no back seat, the front seat is okay, as long as the child is still in the center and is securely attached and that there are not air bags.

thankyou for all your replys, I hope I made my self clear that I wish to know if it is legal? as far as safe goes, I have tryed to turn off the side air bags on my old toyota truck without any luck and the dealer has told me that by law they can not help me even though it is unsafe for my 9 year old girl ,and that is just not right.

Hi![:)]

Go to THIS site and ask on their message boards. They can answer any question you have and very specifically to your state's laws. The techs are great and they answer questions really quickly.

Tell them what your dealership said as well. I think they will be able to help you there as well.

Most won't do this because of liability. I had to pull the fuse from mine. It is a long story and we only had to do it for a few weeks until we could get a larger vehicle.

I do not think there is a law against it but you can check with your local sheriff's department. We had to do it because of a foster baby; the case worker knew. I am 99% sure he would have told me if I could not legally put my daughter in the front.

It might be time to be more practical when car shopping...IF you have kids, a sedan, a king cab truck or SUV or minivan is WAY more practical (and safer) than trying to put kids in the front seat of a vehicle...

I don't think any of my kids sat up front until they were close to driving age....

And, yes, I have a big 7 passenger SUV, and my husband has a gas-guzzling Expedition

With the price of gas, even the SUV would not be a good buy! I would not put a baby in the front seat of a car or a truck. And I'm not sure, but I think it would be illegal now to disconnect any airbag.

I'd sell the truck and get a better vehicle.

It is not illegal for the owner of the vehicle to do it. At least not in FL, I checked. If it is I think I would rather a ticket than have my child killed by an airbag. The thing is we can all say what is best ie not having a baby in the front. If finances stop you from being able to afford a different vehicle what would you do? Disconnect the airbag.

Also, I grew up not only riding in the front seat but without a carseat and seatbelt. I also rode in the little "trunk" of a VW bug when I was little. We were a family of 7 with the bug being our only car: parents up front, three older siblings in the back seat, younger brother and I in the "trunk" space. Not ideal and yes things are better now but sometimes you have no choice.

I spend about 80 bucks every 2 weeks for gas...it's big, it's reliable, it's safe...insurance is only about 60 bucks a month for full coverage. AND...both my girls are safely in the back seat.

You must not drive a lot. I have a PT Cruiser and spend around $45 a week on a low driving week. Of course my kids go to school 20 minutes away and I work...
