There is a newer paypal type of system out called RME. Alot of the people that sell on FSOT type places(Diaperswappers, a couple subforums of TBW) use it in place of paypal. I haven't used it at all, btu everyone seems pretty happy with it...

Yup, I have an account there too. I signed up when they were giving you $25 to sign up for a new account, but I haven't done anything with it since.

I have an RME account as well, and offer it in both of my Etsy shops (not our site) but so far, no one seems to want to pay with it.

I'd say 95% of our customers pay with Paypal - either with an account or just through using their credit card/no account function. The other 5% goes through Google. I have a couple that I trust enough to pay with check. Most of our local sales are cash, but there are a couple here I'll take checks from too.

I also hate giving Ebay my $$, but they do sort of dominate that market, for now anyway. It's a valuable market too... it's sort of revolutionized accepting funds/paying online.

Lexie, you don't work for a food magazine do you? Just wondering.

Unless it was about eating food, they wouldn't pay me to write for them I write for a Christian women's magazine.

She used to go to my mom's one day, and my dad's the other day. I won't be teaching skating this year though, it doesn't fit with Dh's work schedule (we only have one car.)

LOL, we have Rieman (not sure if I spelled that right) and they publish a whole ton of magazines. Most are food or living type magazines. I love it because they have a store here too so we can go buy cookbooks and other things for really cheap.

Funny I should see this thread today. For the past few weeks I've been thinking more and more about finding a way to make unique wall hangings for sale on etsy.com and at local craft fairs. But I'm stuck on knowing where to look to find out about getting the rights (not even sure if that's the correct term) to using the pictures I need to make them. (I mostly use pictures I find on the 'net and print out on my printer. Since the ones I've made so far are just gifts and not for sale I think that's ok - I hope LOL.) I am NOT an artist at all, I can't do them myself. There has to be somewhere I can obtain the rights - I mean places that make invitations, greeting cards, address labels, stuff like that use pictures from somewhere, right?

Anyone have any idea where I can look to find out about this? I mostly like to use black and white sketches, but sometimes I use full color photos if I can get it to print out to where it looks right.

If you know who the artist is, you can contact them for their permission and/or a license to use their work. Actually, without their permission you shouldn't use it at all. If you purchased a photo or sketch or something, then you can use that one copy however you please for your personal use... but aren't supposed to make copies of it, or print random photos that are on the internet unless you know the artist has given permission for that.

You can look at stock photo sites.

THANK YOU for that suggestion! I googled 'stock photos' and found a site with about three million pics to go thru, and part of the licensing agreement says:

Always ask permission from the photographer if you want to use the Image -

In website templates that You intend to sell or distribute.

For creating printed reproductions that You intend to sell.

On "print on demand" items such as t-shirts, postcards, mouse pads, mugs (e.g. on sites like Cafepress), or on any similar mass produced item that would contain the Image in a dominant way.

The part I bolded sounds like it will cover what I'm wanting to do, right? So all I should have to do (assuming the artist gives permission) is email them and let them know what I'm wanting to use it for, right?

I'm so excited!

OK so I think I've gotten most everything figured out as far as actually producing my product. Now I have some questions about the business end, if you ladies don't mind me picking your brains.

When you choose a business name, how do you find out if it's already been taken? I'm wanting to start out selling thru etsy.com, and at local craft fairs. I may eventually have my own website to advertise as well, but that will be down the road after I have generated some interest. I will want to print up some business cards (I can get them for s/h only thru mypoints) so that when I give some of these out as gifts, I can include a card for advertising.

Also, do you need to register the business name anywhere? Or just keep up with the expenses and income to put on the tax returns?

Anything else I need to know? I'm going to get started out using pics that hubby has taken with our camera, so I can have a few to choose from without having to worry about obtaining the rights to them. I'm going to get Kinko's to print them out for me so I will have the quality I need without having to invest in a more expensive printer right off. Also, we have some fallen trees on our property (we live on six acres of woods) that hubby is going to cut up for me to use as the base. So my startup costs are going to be really low (which is a blessing, as we are past broke at the moment).

Thanks for any advice! And thanks Tracy for starting this thread to get me pointed in the right direction!

You'll need to check with your local tax office to find out the laws and regulations for your area. You'll also need to plan on doing lots of reading and studying on filing income taxes for your particular type of business, or plan to hire an accountant. Sometimes it's not as easy as just tracking expenses and income, unfortunately. We have to keep inventory, which I.HATE. Counting thousands of tiny beads and weighing/measuring a ton of sheet metal/wire is not on my fun list.

If you're thinking of using Vista Print for the business cards, I'd recommend you don't. I don't use them myself, but I've heard their quality isn't great and they're famous for ticking people off for various reasons.

If you are going to be working your business, you need to get a tax id number and I would suggest for the first year or two, having an accountant do your taxes. Make sure they know the laws on what can and cannot be deducted when operating out of your home.

If you want to know if there is a business with the same name, google the name you want. You are going to find businesses with the same or similar names, but it isn't like an acting name where there can only be one of you. Just make sure there aren't any in your area with that name in the same line of business.

As for business cards, I went to Sam's club and got one of those cutter things. I buy cardstock paper and my husband made a template for me so all I have to do is go on and stick in whatever I want if I want to change anything, print, and cut. Don't get the pre made cards that you just print on. Those look kind of tacky sometimes. You have to have everything on them perfect or they will be off center. At least with a cutter, you can cut as needed.

And you are welcome for starting this thread. I have just run across so many people lately who act as if all I ever do is sit on my butt all day and do nothing. When you work from home, not only do you have to do alot more than others because you have to take care of ALL the responsibilities, but there is also this wonderful thing called the Self Employment tax. So much, but it is so great when you start to make money and know that someone else isn't making more off of you, it is just fun!

This thread is just perfect timing! My last day at my job is tomorrow - yipee! When I tell people that I plan to start a business from home, they just kind of say - oh how lucky you are, or wow that will be so nice. Yes, it is nice, but don't let me off the hook that easily. It will take a lot of work and motivation to get this going. Some people just don't take me seriously, either. I'm not looking to start the next Microsoft Corporation, but I really just want to do something that I enjoy that will provide a small income for us, and there is no reason that my goal is not attainable. It also bugs me when people imply that I am "lucky" to be able to quit my job. Luck had nothing to do with it! We planned for this and there is a bit of sacrifice happening too.

OK so I've been doing some research, and it looks to me like for now I can consider anything I do/sell to be hobby income rather than a home business. As long as I claim the income as miscellaneous income on our tax return, and don't try to claim more expenses from it than income (which we don't itemize deductions anyway, so I wouldn't be claiming any expenses at all) then I should be good to go.

If by chance it begins to turn a real profit, then I will take the steps necessary to claim it as a home business. But honestly, I don't expect it to go that far and I really don't think I want it to. I just enjoy making pretty things, and it will thrill me to sell a few of them here and there.

I spent some time last night finding good pics that hubby has taken, and manipulated them into (in my opinion ) some really nice images. I can't wait to get started!!!

BTW Danas_Mom, you can find tons of free clip art, etc.... but if you need something specific, let me know. I might be able to sketch something for ya. My Imagekind site is collection of animals. My 2ya site has more variety of subjects.

Thank you car2ner!!!! I just might take you up on that sketching offer.

I've looked up on several free images sites, and unfortunately with what I'm wanting to do with the images, I would have to pay for them or obtain the rights to them by emailing the artists individually. IF I can get enough money down the road to buy a subscription, I can get the images for about $35 each, which will then give me the rights to use that image
(for my purposes) up to 2,000 times. I plan to sell the wall hangings for $20 to $25 each, so it would only take selling a couple of each image used to cover the cost.

The name I wanted to use is too long for etsy.com, so now I'm trying to come up with names that I can use. I think I'm going to start a poll for ideas. This is so much fun!

I am not a wife yet but I do work at home as a hairstylist. It is way better than working in a salon because I dont have to pay the booth-rent. Yet, a little risky letting strangers into my home.
