angie4God -> Thinking of getting Hooked on Phonics...Opinions? Reviews? (8/20/2008 2:10:56 PM)

Hi all,

This week I've recently dusted of the Pre reader edition of Hooked on Phonics that I purchased awhile back but never used and am now using it with my girls as a booster to refresh them from the summer and get them ready for school . One is age 3 and will be starting Pre-K in Sept and the other is 6 and will be starting 1st grade.

We have the Get Ready to Read edition which just goes over the upper and lower case letter names and letter sounds.

I just started this week and already my 3 y/o old has learned to identify 4 letters! As for my oldest it's just served to reinforce the letters and the sounds she knows and has helped her with ones she's struggling with. But I feel she's almost about ready to be able to move on. I'm considering getting the Learn to Read Deluxe Edition Kindergarten to 2nd grade. I've been so impressed with the results so far with the one I have so I'm seriously considering making the investment ($174.00 - on sale). But I thought I'd get some feedback on anyone who's used it. Thanks![:)]

My dd wouldn't get into it but I may have gotten it before she was ready. I sent it back.

What we really liked and worked GREAT for ds, was at www.headsprout.com It's really very cool.

Our library carries several of their products. I would check yours before spending so much.

This really is a great tool, but I agree you should see if the Library can let you check it out rather than pay that kind of money for it. You will find the sets they have for the older children may be a better investment but do look into it.

We were able to get the original set (LEvels 1-5) at a yard sale. It is old: they are tapes not CD's but they worked great for my son. He loved them. He would pop in a tape and listen to it and practice the cards by himself. We started at the end of K (we HS) when he was about 5.5 but he didn't get into it too much. We started again in Sept and he zipped through it. I think he had finished all 5 levels which is supposed to be 2nd grade level by Christmas, a month after he turned 6. Now my ds is the type that I can't teach him anything till he's ready to learn it and once he's ready there's no stopping him. However, it worked very well for him and I loved it.

We have an older version of Hooked on Phonics. It worked very well for two or our children.

Hooked on Phonics is one of the reading programs that I am using with my son. He likes it better than the others (which means he doesn't hate it totally). I really like it and he seems to get more out of it and enjoys it (when he will let himself). We purchased the HOP Kindergarten Deluxe and HOP First Grade Deluxe versions at Sam's Club for less than $30 each. Also purchased the HOP Second Grade for about the same. Not sure what is included in the "complete" version of HOP you are referring to, so can't comment on the price good or bad.

Thanks guys. I really think I might get it. I might look and see if they have it cheaper on e-bay or maybe costco. But it says on the HOP site it's not available in stores so I'll have to see. DH says if I really want to and if I'll use it to go ahead and get it. He's impressed with how fast our 3 y/o is picking it up. My 3 y/o old is picking up the letters very quickly. She's already been able to learn to identify 6 in this week alone! [:)] It's really for my oldest for now since she knows the letters and I really want to get her into the readnig. I think the games suggested in the package really help too.

This is the package I'm thinking of getting. It includes Kindergarten to 2nd grade:

Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read Kindergarten - 2nd Grade

I think I just might make the investment.

t's also become a fun evening routine for me and the girls too :)

I have seen it at stores like Bj's Sam's club, etc

Well guys I took the plunge and got it on e-bay for about $10 less than HOP's original price of $199.00! I can see why DH likes shopping on there. He did get the first HOP from there too [;)]

It seems to be a slightly older version of the same program Kindergarten - 2nd grade, without the CD-ROM but no big deal. It has the Audio CDs which is great. I'll let you guys know how it goes![:)]

Angie4God, you've got a typo in your signature. :)

I'm glad to hear everyone's thoughts. I was considering getting the same for my eldest who is learning to read. I have a friend who had it and may lend me the first portion to see if he likes it.

angie4God -> RE: Thinking of getting Hooked on Phonics...Opinions? Reviews? (8/25/2008 10:37:08 AM)

Thanks IAMJulie for catchng that [:)]

How old is your eldest?

IAMJulie -> RE: Thinking of getting Hooked on Phonics...Opinions? Reviews? (8/26/2008 12:59:29 AM)

He's four.

The typo moved to your post. Boy, that's one hard to catch typo. ;)
