CCCdnt -> U.S. at risk of cyberattacks, experts say (8/18/2008 2:37:05 PM)

(CNN) -- The next large-scale military or terrorist attack on the United States, if and when it happens, may not involve airplanes or bombs or even intruders breaching American borders.

Instead, such an assault may be carried out in cyberspace by shadowy hackers half a world away. And Internet security experts believe that it could be just as devastating to the U.S.'s economy and infrastructure as a deadly bombing.

I think my computer gets attacked on a daily basis, or maybe I just feel that way because I am technically challenged.

Thanks

I tried opening your article but (no lie) my internet security program wouldn't let me. Looks like the hackers got to it first!

I've been hearing a lot about this, especially with operatives from China, hacking into The Pentagon's databases, or at some other major U.S. military installation.

If general public knew how easy it is to hack, they would freak.

concurred...

take it from me, this is old news...(and it is also part of my job as a CEH)...

the infosec fight is a daily one with the rules heightened, then broken. the REAL threat is an insider...but that is what PERSEC is for...

no surprise at all... it's almost always the enemy from within that destroys anything.

It's always astounded me how much ignorance is viewed as a form of security. With all the talk about security, ignorance still seems to be viewed as a primary tool. Maybe 25 years go that might have worked -- at least more than it does today. Maybe it stilll works to a great degree with people who are above the age of 40. But today? More 15 year olds (than we care to think about), who have an affinity and some spare time, can hack.

Agreed. Which begs the question, why would you want to vote for a presidential candidate who doesn't know how to use the internet? [8|]

Hmm. It's very interesting that the most successful IT companies have been run by the marketing types rather than by the technical types. Techies no doubt are great at understanding technology, but it's been my experience that being a techie or even anything close to it is not a precursor to great leadership. Far from it in fact. Most techies tend to get bogged down in detail and really struggle to see the big picture so necessary for a leader to perceive.

What's required for good leadership is someone who appreciates his/her people and their skills and input and who knows how to leverage that.

well, i would vote for him because he would hire someone who does...

isn't that common sense anyway??? i mean, that is what a cabinet is for [;)]

Intelligent as I believe Reagan was, I doubt he understood the technology that made Star Wars a possible ruse. What he understood is something more valuable than technology. He understood how people think. That's imperative to a leader. Much more than the technology. For the technology, you can hire someone. [8D]

Now this is what they said before 9/11 happened. While a cyber attack shouldn't be taken lightly, we still should not discount the probabillity of a traditional terrorist attack at all.

Absolutely I would, then maybe the Prez would stay off the blogs and the porn and pay attention to the real world and its problems.

Thanks
