ORIGINAL: elastic we generally try to add 1 new worship song every week, or every other week, but there is almost never more than 1 new song introduced at a time. it is just too much for the congregation to have to learn totally new songs. they don't get the chance to just sing and worship because they are struggling so hard to figure out which way the melody is going and trying to follow the words. so, we never do more than one. when we do introduce a new song, we usually always sing it the following week, so that it is more familiar. Exactly! We have gotten so heavy into "new" and "fresh" and "mixing things up" and "solos" that the congregation is left watching instead of worshipping. That's not worship - that's performance. I can't recall who it was, but one of the major worship leaders in in today's contemporary Christian music once shared at a conference I was at that the goal of every worship leader should be to become invisible. People should be so focused on God that they aren't looking at you! Anything we do that makes people look at us, is inhibiting our worship. That doesn't mean we never do new songs (routine can kill worship too) - just that there needs to be balance and a purpose behind it.
