They were quickies -- on a whim this morning. I used fresh chives from those growing in my window.

I am allergic to all milk products, but I stood there and wondered if I could simulate sour cream in some way using soy milk. I have learned to do without. It was good anyway. Yeah, I know: it could have been better! I made two because it really was on a whim. I was single for ten adult years, then I married a man who initially did not have my taste in food. It's amazing what can be done under those circumstances -- cooking for one.

Now I might just look up the recipe... btw, I skimmed an article from a USA Today magazine about using beer in cooking. Evidently, stout is good for chocolate sauce to put onto ice-cream.

Years ago, I took my mother out to eat at a fancy-pants French restaurant, and one of the desserts they offered that day was an ice cream they had made. It was Guinness ice cream. My mother had no clue what Guinness was, and I didn't say anything when she ordered it. She liked it. I couldn't imagine what it would taste like (although I have a fondness for Guinness), so I begged a taste. It was actually good. I could vaguely taste the Guinness, but it tasted mostly of caramel.

I actually didn't like it so I only had one bite. My extremely strict tee-toler aunt and all 3 of their young boys wouldn't stop raving about it all evening long though. Oh, ROFL! And that reminds *me* of a wedding I went to once, where a Lutheran married a Baptist. At the reception it was made clear that there was "Lutheran punch" and "Baptist punch," but a few of the Baptist ladies got in the Lutheran line (to see how Lutheran punch tasted) and liked it so much they lapped up quite a bit of it, even though they were warned repeatedly of what exactly Lutheran punch was. (The weren't schnockered or anything--just cute and giggly--and they weren't driving.)

Does cooking with beer leave the beer taste though? I really detest beer. I do enjoyed things cooked in red wine though. No things don't taste like beer, the alcohol cooks out. But, it does make super moist chicken! (That's the only thing I've ever cooked with beer).

Try mixing Brown Sugar, Worchestershire sauce, butter and beer and use it as a baste on Hamburgers or hotdogs. Gives them an excellent taste.

And yet some still use alcohol cooked into food will try and convince the PO or the cops that the Jack Daniels steak caused the positive reading on the PBT. True story.

Okay, y'all. When we moved into our house in January 2002, I bought a carton of beer because I wanted to be "nice" to the slugs. However, the new house just didn't have that many slugs. So the beer sat around until I used some in 2007 to excite my mint and my Johnny-Jump-Ups. Unfortunatley, the main thing that got excited were fruit flies -- which were both excited (in more ways than one) and very drunk! So I quit giving them the beer. I still have about three cans left. Can I cook with that successfully? Oh. I think the fruit flies were Christian, because they flew into the form of a cross then nose-dived back in to have some more. Anyway, if they were not, I am a believer who doesn't drink alcohol, so I am asking here.

I personally wouldn't cook with it, as it will be well after it's use-by date.

Oh, it's way past the date, but the fruit flies thought it was great. I thought that since beer smells so bad, and has alcohol in it, how could it get any worse than when they made it?

That sounds delicious. I can verify that Guinness and ice cream go well together. Has anyone other than me had an ice cream float using Guinness? My wife thinks it's weird, but the flavors go together so well. How did I discover this? I guess I just have an instinct for these things sometimes. Also, a bowl of ice cream and a mug of Guinness create a nice flavor combination.
